WHO IS THE RULER OF ROME?

• Diocletian split the Empire up into four parts each with a ruler (the Augustus and his assistant, the Caesar).

• The worked for a while but by 311 A.D. each of the four rulers was claiming to be the only real Augustus

• One of those battling for power was a brilliant leader named Constantine (KAHN-stuhn-teen)

Facts about Constantine:1. Pagan at birth

2. Fought for control of the Empire

3. Night before the battle he had a vision. He saw a flaming symbol in the sky---a blazing Chi Rho (kiy roh) cross, a symbol of Christ.

CONSTANTINE: THE NEW EMPEROR

Facts about Constantine:4. Ordered his troops to paint that on their shield before battle.

5. After winning the battle (and battles after it) he gained control of the empire, he sent out the Edict of Milan (muh-LAHN)

6. The Edict of Milan said that all religions were free to exist in Rome. It mentioned Christianity in particular.

7. He became the first Christian Emperor of Rome.

• Christianity gave people hope for a better future--at least in the afterlife.

• Jesus' teachings made many Romans feel their life had meaning.

IT’S ALL ABOUT LOCATION• Constantine knew that the city of Rome wasn’t important

any longer and that the real action was East.

• Trade routes coming from Africa, Asia, and Europe all met at a little Greek town of Byzantium.

• Constantine moved the capital and renamed it Constantinople.

• We’ll learn about this city and the East in Unit 11.

• Things are not going so well.

• The once great city is in it’s death throws.

• Let’s take a look at a list of bad things going on in the Eternal City.

THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE WESTERN EMPIRE

• Emperors and generals fought over the land.

• Roads and buildings fell into disrepair.

• War, famine, and disease took many lives.

• Invading tribes of barbarians overran Roman lands and towns.

• In 410 A.D. Visigoths plundered Rome after the emperor of the Western Empire and his court fled.

• In 476 A.D. barbarians captured and exiled Romulus Augustulus, the last Roman emperor.
