p HUDDLE UPS (OPT IONAL)

Optional huddle ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins. There are multiple ideas for interaction during this time, such as simple games that preschoolers can play on the floor or within whatever arrangements you gather your kids. This time can continue for a few seconds even after the stage manager addresses the crowd.

(Print the following for your small group leaders.)

Today, kids will learn that God loves and cares for them even when circumstances make it hard to see His plan. Play a game that requires kids to use what they KNOW instead of what they SEE.

• Gather enough index cards for each child to have one. On each card, write a word or draw a picture representing things that kids might associate with God’s love or care. (Examples: parents, home, family, Jesus, food, friends, church)

• As your group assembles, have a leader take one child to a place where they cannot hear the group. Pick one of these cards and explain what is on it to the other kids in the group. Invite the first child back to the group.

• Instruct the first child to ask their friends “yes” or “no” questions to help them determine what is on their card. (Examples: “Am I a person?” “Would you find me at church?”)

• Continue play until kids discover their identities as time allows.

• Discuss the words on the cards. Pray together, thanking God for the many ways He cares for us.

Color “Joseph and His Brothers” Coloring Sheets

• Talk to preschoolers about their family members. Tell preschoolers that today they will hear a Bible story about a man who had many brothers.

• Provide coloring supplies and coloring sheets to the preschoolers. Allow them to color on their pages while they wait for the session to begin.

• If the kids prefer to use blank paper, they can color on the back of the page.

(trying to gather composure) Oh … oh … Hi, there … I’m so glad you’re here! I had the FUNNIEST dream last night! I was on a farm driving a super fast tractor! I was making turns through the barn like a real race car driver! Chickens were flying everywhere; pigs were diving for cover; goats were jumping out of my way … IT WAS GREAT! Then, all of the sudden a purple cow jumps out right in front of me. The cow looks at me and says, “Hi, my name is Violet.” (bursts out laughing again) Violet, the purple cow! Get it? Purple … Violet …

(slowly stops laughing; starts listening to headset)

(talks into headset; still chuckling) Oh, hi, Violet! How can I help you? … (waits; demeanor changing) You heard me laughing at you? … No, I would never call you a cow! … Yes, I know that’s what I said, but that’s not what I meant … I was telling about this dream and … oh, please don’t be upset … Violet? Violet?

Oh, man. She thinks I was talking about HER! I’ve really hurt her feelings. I didn’t mean to! It’s all just a big mistake, but I guess I can understand why she’d be upset. I wouldn’t like it if I thought someone was laughing at me … or calling me a purple cow. I’d better go apologize and explain things right now.

(talks into headset) Team, do you think you can get this show started without me? I’ve got something important to take care of. (waits) Thanks, guys! I knew you could do it!

OK, guys, let’s stand up and count down! (Start at 10.) 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!

Alright! How’s everybody doin’? We’ve got a fun day ahead!

For the last several weeks, we’ve learned about a guy named Moses. Do you remember that? Well today, we’re going to meet another guy who a LOT of stuff happen to him in his life.

(Show Life Point slide.) In our Bible story today, Joseph gets hurt by people very close to him and it made him sad. But, God is always with us. Say that with me. (Repeat with slide.) God is always with us. No matter where we go or what happens to us, God will ALWAYS be with us.

(Show Bible Verse slide—select preferred version.) Our Bible verse for today is from Psalm 46:7 and it says the same thing: “God is with us.” When we know God is with us, we don’t have to be scared and we don’t have to feel lonely because we know He’s there! Let’s say that again: “God is with us.” Psalm 46:7 (Repeat with slide.)

Game Instructions for “Wrap a Leader!”:

• Select five leaders and two to four kids for each leader. A group of kids will wrap a leader in toilet paper. (Use two leaders and eight kids if your group is small.)

• A time limit can be used in order to heighten the competition.

• The team to wrap their leader best, wins. Points can be given for creativity and for using the most toilet paper.

Hey guys, welcome to Connection Point—the game where we’ll learn to wrap things up!

Today, we are going to play “Wrap a Leader!” First, we will need 5 leaders. (Ask leaders to come to front of room.) Next, we need these leaders to select some volunteers. (Each leader will select 2-4 kids to be wrappers.) Kids, your job is to wrap your leader like a mummy! Ask your leader to hold one end of the toilet paper in their hand. Then walk around them in a circle and try to cover them with toilet paper from head to toe! You may need to ask your leader to bend down or sit on the ground so that you can reach their head!

But there’s a catch. You will get points for _____________ (name things like creativity or most toilet paper used). The team with the most points wins.

OK, let’s set the time and see how well you guys can work together! Ready? Start wrapping!

(Set your own time limit. Consider a countdown clock on the screen to add to their excitement at trying to beat the clock.)

Goodness! How are you doing leaders, er, I mean, mummies? Can you breathe? Wow, kids … you did some awesome wrapping! OK guys, now, can you help your leader get unwrapped? Take the toilet paper to the nearest trash can and then come back and have a seat.

STORYTELLER

(Show Bible Story slide.) Well, hey, everyone! I’m so excited to be here today and to be able to introduce you to the next Bible person we’re going to learn about. His name is Joseph. Can you say Joseph? Joseph. Great! There are many men named Joseph in the Bible. I want to tell you about a Joseph who lived a long time before Jesus was born.

(Open Bible to Genesis and tell the following story.) Joseph had 10 older brothers. Do any of you have 10 big brothers or sisters? I didn’t think so! Well, Joseph’s father, Jacob, loved him very much. In fact, Joseph was Jacob’s favorite son. Because Jacob loved Joseph so much, he gave Joseph a beautiful coat made of many colors. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more, they became really angry and jealous of Joseph and his coat.

When Joseph started having some weird dreams, he told his brothers about them. Well, the brothers didn’t like Joseph at all, and they REALLY didn’t like his dreams! In the dreams, Joseph said that all the brothers were going to bow down to him one day. (Demonstrate bowing down.)

One day, Jacob, Joseph’s father, sent him to check on his brothers who were minding the sheep. When they saw him coming, they decided to hurt Joseph. But Reuben, the oldest brother, said not to hurt Joseph. They put him in an empty hole in the ground, and took his coat. When some traders came by, they sold Joseph to them.

Joseph’s brothers took the coat back to Jacob. He was very sad. Meanwhile, the traders sold Joseph to Potiphar, an important man in Egypt.

(Show Christ Focus slide.) Wow! Joseph had a really tough time, didn’t he? But, even though Joseph’s brothers hurt him, God was with him. As we hear more about Joseph and his life, we’ll read in the Bible that God was always with him. God is always with us, too. When we have put our trust in Jesus and are His children, He is with us wherever we go.

(Show Life Point slide. Play soft music under prayer.) Did you know that the Bible says that someday Jesus will come to earth again? That’s a day to look forward to, isn’t it? Let’s pray together, OK?

Dear God, we know that people will sometimes hurt us. But thank You that You never hurt us. You love us and are always with us. We love You. In Jesus’ name, … Amen.

Optional Giving Segment: When we know that God loves us, the best thing we can do is show our love for Him. And, one way to do that is by giving an offering. The money that we collect will help others know how much God loves them. And hopefully, they will choose to connect to God and follow His plan for their lives. If you’d like to give today, …

(Give your own directions for how the kids can give an offering. Perhaps you have buckets in the back of the room, a treasure chest up front, or a basket that each small group leader passes.)

Boy, did I learn a big lesson today! I was so busy laughing about my dream that I didn’t even stop to think how it might hurt someone else. I talked to Violet, and she understands now that I didn’t mean to hurt her feelings. In fact, after I explained things, she thought it was pretty funny, too!

You know, sometimes people will hurt your feelings, but God will never hurt you! We learned today that even though Joseph wasn’t treated well by his brothers, God had a plan. God protected Joseph and cared for him even when things weren’t going so great. Isn’t it good to know that God will always take care of us, no matter what? He has a plan for each of us and He wants the very best for our lives.

Well, I’m out of here! I’m meeting Violet for ice cream. You guys remember to grab those One Conversation™ pages and tell your parents all about what we learned today … but, maybe leave out the part about the purple cow!

This time is designed for churches that have a pick-up time from a large room as parents arrive. It’s a great time for follow-up conversations and questions from small group leaders about the session’s content. Games can also be used.

• Tell the missions story about Peter Yanes. Explain that Peter is a church planter. A church planter is a person who finds a place that needs a church and helps the people there start one.

• Make a prayer hand. Help kids trace their hand onto a sheet of paper. Across the palm, write Pray for Peter.

• Encourage kids to put their “prayer hands” somewhere that will remind them to pray for Peter Yanes and his missions work.

• Lead in a prayer for Peter Yanes.

Missions Story: Peter Yanes: Returning a Favor

As a boy, Peter Yanes’ life was changed when he went to church and learned about Jesus. Now, Peter and his wife, Irene, are missionaries in Pennsylvania. Peter is a church planter, which means he finds places that need churches and people who can start them.

Last year, Peter met Noel Geniza. Noel and his family lived in a community called Pottstown. This was exactly the community where Peter wanted to start a church! Peter and Noel worked together to start the church, where many people now worship and learn about God.

Peter is glad that people support missionaries and pray for him as he starts churches in Philadelphia. He says: “I can do whatever God wants me to do. I want to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations and to all people groups.”
