2.1Building Blocks of

Life

Essential Question:What is matter and how does it change?

Questions:Matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space is matter.

Atomic Theory: EVERYTHING around you is made of matter. Matter can be organized, changed, and rearranged.

What causes matter to change phases? Energy change speeds up or slows down how the atoms that make up matter react.

3 Main Phases of Matter:Solid: Slow moving atoms, rigid, definite volume, mass, and shape Liquid: medium speed atoms, moving, definite mass and volume, no definite shape.Gas: rapidly moving atoms, no definite shape or volume.

Essential Question: Is all matter the same?

Questions: YES and NO!

Element: Different proton # in the Nucleus makes different heavier elements. Each element has different characteristics/ properties. These elements are organized in the Periodic Table.

Everything in the known universe is made up of a different arrangement of the same 118* elements.

Molecules*

Compounds

Elements/atoms are connected to each other through chemical bonds to make larger things like molecules and compounds.

Molecule: 2 or more atoms joined together chemically.

Compound: A molecule made up of 2 or more different types of atoms/elements.Multiple molecules.
