Unit 231: Process payments for purchases in a retail

Revision cards
Next card
• if there is a barcode on the item, it can be scanned to reveal the price
• if there are similar items, you can look at the price ticket on them
• you may have a price list
• you may remember the price, but be careful that your memory is current
• if in doubt ask your supervisor.
To check the price of an item:

• point of sale terminal
• electronic calculator
• long-hand arithmetic.
To work out a customer’s total bill you can use:

• fit its description
• be fit for its purpose
• be of satisfactory quality.
The Sale of Goods Act states that what you sell must:

• watermarks
• metal strips
• raised print.
As well as cash, you may accept other forms of payment such as:

• they are accurate
• possible sales are not lost.
When accepting banknote use a detection pen or UV light, or check for:

• words and figures agree
• signature agrees with supporting card or driving licence
• date is correct
• payee’s name is correct.
When accepting cheques, check that:

• ask for another form of payment• do not return the note to the customer
– it is a criminal offence to knowingly pass on a counterfeit note
• the note will be forwarded to The Bank of England.
If you are given a banknote that appears to be counterfeit:

• ask for another form of payment
• advise the customer politely that there is a problem
• if you suspect theft or fraud alert supervisor or security.
