This is where I will go to take the photos for the George Ezra photoshoot. Due to technical and privacy issues I am unable to show you pictures inside the location until the day we go to take them.

Test photography

By taking photos as trial versions is a good way to get the best possible images at the end for my new magazine BEATS! These are photos that I had taken that are not great quality. This is due to many factors such as poor composition, the fact that the second and third image has the guitar cut off, there is other distractions in the background of the image that makes the main subject unimportant.

Masthead Font styles

In order for me to make a successful final decision for my Masthead font style. I have tested, tried and experimented different ways in which I could represent the genre of my music magazine, while using Photoshop CS5 to design it. I also used www.dafonts.com to download a specific font style that I thought might work for my magazine masthead.

I have tried to create a masthead using inspiration from NME, which was my magazine of inspiration for LO1.

They are all good masthead styles that fit the purpose of my magazine very well, but there are some that have not worked out as well as I expected. These are the 2nd , 3rd and 5th examples. My favourites are the 1st and the 6th because they are more fit for the purpose of my new magazine.

Page 12: Unit 30 LO3

I have come to my decision that the font above was the most suited and fit for purpose for my magazine. This is because of the balance between the drop shadow, inner shadow, the white stroke around the red text and the red, white and black colours used, which are also used for NME’s masthead.

Here is an improved version of the Masthead because I have inserted the strapline below the main masthead text, but it is within the black shape. The white text used against the black shape for my strapline makes it stand out and it fits the purpose of my indie rock magazine.

Language – Double Page Spread

This is my draft interview that I created used Microsoft word. This gives me an idea of how I want it to look when making it on Photoshop, for the Real thing.

Page 17: Unit 30 LO3

Tools I will use in Photoshop that will be reflected on for the DPS Interview

There will be a range of tools that I will be using for the double page spread/interview.

These consist of the ‘pen tool’ to create the columns, ‘free transform tool’ to resize and move images, shape tool to add shapes for example for the black rectangle for the masthead. I also will use the “text tool” to add the content of the main interview. I will also have to use the refine edge tool to make sure that every selection I make has no sharp edges and is as accurate as possible. I will use the ruler tool to accurately make sure that all my columns are of equal length and width, the images and shapes are all in line with each other. This is so that it doesn’t appear untidy and messy. By using the “ruler tool”, I am making sure it looks as neat and professional as possible.

Masthead logo:To increase brand identity.

Main Body of interview:The most important part of the interview as it has the most amount of content.

Image and description:Fill the empty space and to make it more visual appealing for the reader.

Background Colour:Now it’s black.

Grey is not suitable for genre of magazine I am portraying.

Main Image:The main star of the interview goes here. It will help to make it more visual for the reader.

Key Names: Those who where involved in the production.

Stand First and drop capital:This is to introduce the interview. To inform the reader of what the interview is going to be about.

Pull Quote:To add an important, dramatic quote to inform the reader of what the most important part is, something that changed them.

Here I have changed the line around the pull quote to white instead of blue. This is because it is important to stay within the brand colours.

Key Fact box:To make it more interesting and fun for the reader. Here I have added a white strapline to make it more visible.

Page Numbers: to make it more realistic and straight forward for the reader.

Page 21: Unit 30 LO3

Step by Step guide on production of front cover

1. Firstly, I created a masthead and the for my new magazine called BEATS! and this was the final version that I wanted to portray the indie-rock genre.

2. Secondly, I imbedded the masthead, the date and strapline within it within the main image of my “George Ezra“ look a like.

3. I then inserted the cover lines.

4. I then inserted the main headline.

5. I decided that it was a good idea to add a promotion on the front page such as a competition to win 2 free tickets to V Festival 2015 and also the barcode and social media and publisher links.

Page 22: Unit 30 LO3

Step by Step guide on product of double page spread

1. The first step was to create a base layer and choose the colour I wanted to use. I also inserted the magazine masthead on the top left of the DPS. I decided that to make it more realistic I needed to insert page numbers on the bottom left and right of the DPS.

This was the first colour I decided to use. I discovered that it was not the right colour for the mood of the interview.

2. The second step was to create the headline for the article/ mag interview. I had to ensure that it was the correct font style for the mood of the interview. I then added the editor, photographer and stylist names at the start of the interview so that readers would know who was involved in the production of the article. By using the pen tool I started to create the first column and copied the text for this from my draft article.

3. I continued to create the remaining three columns using the pen tool for the interviews and copying the text into it.

Page 23: Unit 30 LO3

Step by Step guide on product of double page spread

I placed a pull quote within the second column to increase the visual element and also to inform readers that it’s the most important part of the article. I have also included two photographs to make it more eye catching and visual appealing to the reader.

I then decided to add a image caption under the smaller image on the bottom stating “Above George Staying Ezra!” This is suggesting to the reader that George Ezra wants to keep doing what he is doing and not change because of someone else’s influence. He wants to be unique and be himself. I also have included social media links both Facebook and Twitter to follow George Ezra on these sites. This is a good marketing and advertising technique.

Finally I inserted a Key Facts about George box as I realised there was a lot of empty space that needed to be filled up. I also thought that I would write at the bottom right of the page “ Check Out the full interview at “Check out the full interview @BeatsMusic-Mag.com”.

Page 24: Unit 30 LO3

Conclusion

Overall, in this section I have been able to produce the actual production material for my new indie rock music magazine called “BEATS!” I have covered many areas including the planning for the images to be taken (where/when/ the equipment needed and the permission taken), the production plan regarding the budget etc, I have designed a flat plan of all the content that I will plan to include within the magazine. I have planned everything I want to include within the front cover and double page spread interview. This includes the masthead, main headline, cover lines, promotion/competition, price, date, barcode, social media and publisher links. I have also given a step by step guide into producing both my front cover and DPS.
