SUGGESTIONS

The students will observe as the teacher draws on the board, mixed-number addition models. Students will volunteer identifying the numbers being added and tell how to get the sum. (sample: Add the whole-number parts and the fraction parts separately and then combine the two sums.)

Students will work in pairs to find how much brown sugar is needed for three recipes of Mandarin spareribs on page 121 student book. Have them write the numbers vertically and talk about how to find the sum (7½)

SUGGESTIONS

The students will be divided in small groups and each group will write an addition sentence that has two different fractions as addends. Encourage them to use math vocabulary to explain how they found the sum. Then have students write a related addition sentence and two related subtraction sentences using the same numbers. Have them explain how they know their sentences are correct.

Have pairs of students each choose a mixed numbers with fraction denominator 12 or less. Have them find the difference and write each step of the process.

concept with an inch ruler or a number line. Have them talk about how the blue and red model on page 130 student book shows ¼ of 2/5.

The students will be in pairs and will read the examples on page 130 student book. Then they will draw models for ¾ x 2/3 and 2 x 3½. Have pairs talk about how their models show the multiplication. Then have them perform the multiplication without the models (1/2, 7).

The students will be grouped in pairs and will draw a row with 3 squares and a row with 2 circles. Have them write a ratio of squares to circles and use their own words to describe the relationship. (3:2; sample: For every 3 squares there are 2 circles.)

The students will be required to name items that can be described by the ratio, and to explain their reasoning (sample ¼; 1 car for every 4 tires.)

Students will work in pairs writing proportions in a piece of paper, exchange papers, and label the parts using term, ratio, proportion, and cross products. Have them check each other’s work.

The students will be grouped in pairs and cut out newspapers articles and advertisements that use fraction, decimals, or percent. Have them sort by examples by type and see if there any patterns in how each form is used to explain data. For example, articles on the sports pages use decimals and percent more than often than fractions.

The students will get a 10-by-10 grid to show 3/10. Have them tell how to write a percent for the shaded portion (3/10 = 30/100 = 30%)

The students will read the examples on page 143 student book, find the fractions equivalent to 60%, 75%, and 62.5% (3/5, ¾. 5/8)

SUGGESTIONS

Students will be placed in small groups and each group will list the five ways to use percent given in the Web. Have them discuss situations in which they would want the percent in each example to be a greater number and in which they would want it to be a lesser number. (Answer will vary, but generally when paying money or offering a discount, you would like the least percent. When receiving money or buying a discounted item, you would like the greatest percent.)

Students will work in pairs and find the final cost of a $25 vase that has a 20% discount and a 5% sales-tax rate ($21). Have them label their work with the terms original price, discount, sale price, sales tax, and final cost.

The students will talk about how finding simple interest and sales tax are alike and different. (Alike: Both multiply percent and money. Different: Interest includes time in the calculation.)

SUGGESTIONS

Students will use newspapers and magazines. Have them cut out pictures that show uses of points, lines, and planes. Then have them create a collage of the pictures, labeling the points, lines, and planes and telling how they are used in some of the pictures.

Students will discuss in small groups types of angles, refer students to the photo at the top of page 182 (textbook). Ask them to name or describe an acute angle (<ACB or <ACD) and an obtuse angle (<BCD).

Students will be divided in pairs. Each pair will discuss types of angles, refer students to the classroom clock.

Have them write times for which the clock hands form acute angles, obtuse angles, right angles, and straight angles. When possible, students should give several examples of each.

3. Activities for Understanding

SUGGESTIONS Students will work in pairs to demonstrate what they know about the three types of angle pairs. Have them

draw examples and explain them to others in their group.

The students will be divided in small groups, provide each group with straws cut into 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-in. lengths, three of each length, and short pieces of pipe cleaner. Have them make a triangle of each type on page 187 (textbook). Ask, Are there any three straws that will not make a triangle? (2- ,3-, 5-in. straws; two sides together have to measure more than the third in order to form an angle.)

The students will receive copies of all six types of triangles shown in page 187 (textbook). Students will work

with a partner. Have partners study the diagrams. Ask, Can you see any relationship between the largest angle and longest side of a triangle? They should see that sides opposite largest angles are longest, sides opposite smallest angles are shortest, and sides opposite congruent angles are congruent.
