Two main reasons:

- Factories need a lot of space for machines and goods.

- Factory machines make a lot of noise and give out smoke and heat which pollute the environment.

Features of industrial areas:

Industrial land is less expensive than commercial land

Have good network of roads. We can transport raw materials and finished goods easily

Most of the residential areas are away from industrial areas.

B. Where are our residential areas?

They are less expensive than commercial areas.

However, there are some areas where factories and residential buildings are close together.

C. What is a mixed commercial and residential area?

Located in old urban areas where shops and residential flats are found together

Crowded with old buildings. Streets are narrow and facilities are poor

The lower floors of the buildings are shops

The upper floors are residential flats

Many of them are being developed

For examples:Yau Ma Tei, Sheung Wan, Mongkok and Wan Chai Next


D. Where are recreational areas?

Places for leisure activities

e.g. parks, sports grounds and swimming pools etc…

More land is needed for recreation as population grows

Recreation has to compete for land with commercial and residential uses for land
