• Everything that you see is matter. Matter is anything that takes up space.

• One way to describe matter is by its physical properties.

• A physical property is a characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure directly.

• Matter can be different colors.

• Matter can be described by its texture. It can be smooth or rough.

• Matter can be described by its hardness or how easily its shape can be changed.

• Matter is different sizes.

• Matter has different shapes.

• Even you are made of matter.


How Much Mass?


• Mass is the amount of matter an object has.

• Mass is also a measure of how hard it is to move an object.

• The more mass an object has, the harder it is to move the object.


Measure It!

• To measure mass, you use a pan balance.

• A pan balance measures mass in grams (g).

• To find mass, you often have to use math. Subtract the mass of the empty container from the mass of the container and its contents.


What’s the Volume? • An object’s volume is the amount of space it

takes up.

• To find the volume of a cube or a rectangular solid, multiply its length by its width and its height.

• Use a graduated cylinder to measure the volume of a liquid.

• The units of the volume of a liquid are milliliters (mL).

• You can also use a graduated cylinder to find the volume of a solid.



Measure It!

• To find the volume of a solid using a graduated cylinder, you must measure and use math.

• First find the volume of the water in the graduated cylinder. Then add the solid. Measure the volume again. Subtract the volume of the water alone from the volume of the water and the object.

• The volume of a solid is measured in cubic centimeters. Remember that 1 milliliter equals 1 cubic centimeter.



Hot and Cold

• Temperature is a measure of how warm something is.

• You use a thermometer to measure temperature.

• There are two temperature scales frequently used: Fahrenheit and Celsius.



Hot and Cold • Most weather reports use the Fahrenheit scale. On

this scale, water becomes ice at 32 degrees. Water boils at 212 degrees.

• The other scale is the Celsius scale. On this scale, water becomes ice at 0 degrees. Water boils at 100 degrees.

• To find the temperature of something, you use a thermometer.

• You also can use your hand to feel whether something is warm or cold.
