In the twenty-rst century, every student’s academic career consists of numerous presentations. How many presentations have you had to make? How many times have you or your peers fallen asleep listening to another student’s presentation? The truth is obvious: presentations need some pizzazz, so next time you create a presentation, consider these ideas:

Less is MoreSimplicity is the key to a superb visual aid for a presentation. These types of visual aids for your presentation include: the commonly used PowerPoint, Keynote, an Apple version of PowerPoint, or Prezi, a fairly new technology using web-based maps. Moreover, you should only use words when you need to. When you rst glance at an extremely long essay, you might be impressed by the gigantic word count. But if you try to cram in a lot of words in presentations, there will be negative eets.Firstly, the audience, even if they are impressed by the amount of text on the screen, wouldn’t be bothered to read it. Even if they were, they would be reading the text instead of paying attention to you. To worst thing to do is to read o the visual aid and have your back turned to the audience. Everyone will be thinking, “Duh! We know how to read.” If there are words on each slide, then they should give a main overview of the point that the presenter is talking about. Presentation aids are supposed to be of visual assistance, not the main focus. Try to keep your visual aid as simple as possible.

The Power of ImagesIn order to maximize the use of visual aids, choose strong and powerful images. It doesn’t matter how many images you choose, as long as they support the message. This goes along with the theme of “less is more.” If you decide to only put images or even one image on a slide, then be sure to nd the image with highest possible resolution. Even one blurry image will make the whole PowerPoint look awed. The carefully selected images should help capture the audience’s attention and make them more attentive.

The Amazing Speech Without an amazing speech, you cannot have amazing presentation. Creating an amazing speech is a dicult task. It is very challenging to spark interest in your audience with academic topics such as “colonialism in the Philippines”. If you have a choice to choose a topic, don’t choose ones that will bore you or your audience to death. If it is not appealing

to you, then it won’t engage your audience either. To get the audience engrossed in your presentation, you must make some sort of connection. This can be established by humor or familiarity. The audience likes what they already know and experience. Another tactic to use is to tell anecdotes, short stories to attract the audience’s interest, or involve the audience by asking them questions, so they will have something to do instead of just sitting there.

Although these tips will denitely spice up your presentations, you can also be more adventurous! Try to use other methods of presenting such as performing skits or songs. Next time you have a presentation, remember to consider those following ideas, so that your audience won’t snooze away.

A LETTER FROM THE EDITORS-IN-CHIEFDear Readers,

Happy autumn! As the weather is cooling down UNIT-E is heating up and starting the year on a good note. Most excitingly, we’ve increased the range of our distribution by including two new schools, the Korean International School of Beijing and Tsing Hua International School.

The UNIT-E Core team and WAB are gearing up for the UNIT-E Publication Workshop as we type and we hope it will be a success. So far we’ve registered participants from many different schools and found two brilliant keynote speakers. To learn more about the workshop, read the next issue of UNIT-E or look out for the next workshop date.

We would like to take this time to invite you, reader, to become a writer. If there is anything that is burning in the back of your mind or that is dying to be published, please send it to [email protected] or [email protected]. Moreover, as the current seniors will begin phasing out of their leadership roles, we will be looking for people to replace them. If you are interested, please email the editors-in-chief at the addresses above.

Hoping to have seen you at the workshop!

Heather Budimulia and Alice Anchisi

UNIT-E TRIVIAUNIT-E Magazine is officially an organization, well, at least on the wonderful world of the web. Our new domain name, unit-emagazine.org, was a parting gift from our Ex Arts Editor/Service Head/Technology Boss, Dan Zhang. The website isn’t even a month old but there are some changes and features we’d like to draw your attention to. Firstly, we have (finally!) updated our header to reflect the month of September/October. Secondly, UNIT-E recruitment is live and ready for applications for writers, artists and photographers. Third and lastly, the website is a platform for readers to connect with us so leave us a comment!

IN THIS ISSUE...

Student Opinion: It may not be one of the UN’s Millennium Development goals, but Marine Captivity is an important issue.

Academics: Learn how to avoid sleeping in class, no matter how boring the class in question is.

Happenings: UNIT-E proudly presents the final two spreads of the Publication Feature. Keep a look out for these publications!

The Arts: Having trouble picking a theme for IB art? Pick up some tips and tricks compiled for you by IB art veterans.

Chillax: Need even more reasons to play Tetris? Discover how exactly Tetris relates to real life and all the lessons that falling bricks hold in store.

UNIT-E SERVICE PROJECTUNIT-E wanted to see how the library project was going so we surveyed the people who used it the most, the children of BaiXingZhuang.

When do you think is the best time to open the library? Most people thought the weekend afternoons, around 1pm-5pm, is the best time to open the library.

What types of books/supplies/games do you want to see in the library? Most people wanted more comic or picture books. Children science books, fairytales, and simple chapter books were also popular choices among the kids. In addition, the kids thought the supplies and games were sufficient.

What do you expect the volunteers to do for you? The kids wanted to see warm, friendly volunteers interact with them, while some thought the volunteers should introduce/recommend books and tutor them.

Would you recommend your friends to come here? Most of them said yes, they would recommend this library; however, they claimed their friends are either too busy or live too far away. Few, on the other hand, said they already brought their friends here.

How has the library affected you? All of the kids had positive things to say about the library. Some said it was fun playing with their neighbors, while reading and gaining knowledge. Some said whenever they were bored; they could go to the library and do something productive.

On the scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, how would you rate this library? They gave us an average of 9!

UNIT-E UpdatesHanna Kim, a junior at BWYA, is our new Communica-tions Director. Congratulations!

UNIT-E has added more schools to its distribution route including Tsing Hua International School and the Korean International School of Beijing.

The UNIT-E Core team has decided that reviews of any kind would all fall under Student’s Opinion as they reflect your views to the community around us.

ABOUT UNIT-EUNIT-E was founded in the spring of 2010 with the aim of establishing a non-profit, student-run magazine for international students in Beijing. Staffed by current students from a range of international schools, the magazine provides an amalgam of cultural tidbits, fragments of Beijing student life, and a broad spectrum of unique perspectives from a diverse group of young adults.

UNIT-E’s VISION & PHILOSOPHYUNIT-E is dedicated to its service as a medium for the empowerment of international school students through writing and expression. The publication strives to support students in becoming proactive world citizens and developing strong involvement in addressing social issues in Beijing.

Beijing international school students’ individual efforts to address a vast array of social issues have resulted in numerous small accomplishments that are successes in their own right, but have little impact on the large-scale issues which these projects address. UNIT-E believes in the synergy embedded in a dedicated core of proactive youths, whose united effort harbours an impact far beyond the small-scale. UNIT-E believes in the harnessing of this life-changing power - the ability for youth to create substantial improvement in any community through cohesive and comprehensive efforts - and so envisions UNIT-E as a framework for any and all Beijing students to engage with local Beijing and make a positive impact on the status quo.
