The Council Commissioner’s Corner:

Rick Greenwood

Scouting Friends,

We still have two plus weeks of recruitment left and although we have an increase in enrollment we still have a lot more that we can do. We still have some events where we can recruit more boys into the scouting program and there is still time to do more boy talks and open houses. So, let’s see if we can still get that increase in numbers up to 5 or 10 percent.

I had the opportunity to attend the Central Region Area 4 Commissioners Training in Zanesville this past weekend and gained some valuable information. One of the points I want to bring to everyone’s attention once again is the Youth Protection Training that must be taken in order to recharter with your unit again. The percentage of adults who are trained is around 90% but we need to get that number to 100%. I encourage everyone who knows of someone who needs this training to help them to find a way to take it, whether on line or using a CD and then filling out a training sheet. We don’t want to lose adults that are working with the units to help provide these scouts with a good program.

One of the next big events coming will be rechartering time for all units. Most charters will be handed out at roundtables but if you can’t make the roundtable please make arrangements to get your charter so you can get started on it. If you have problems getting it done you will have more time to fix the problem and get finished on time. And once again Youth Protection is going to be a big factor in completing those charters.

I also want to encourage the District Commissioners and Unit Commissioners to continue making your contacts with the units. We need to continue helping them with any problems they might have and give them our support.

The last thing I want to mention is the need for unit commissioners that I talked about last month. We are in need of several in all three districts. So if you are looking for a way to help please consider this as a way to get involved.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please send me an email at [email protected] or call me at my cell (304-374-5480). You can also leave me a voice mail or send me a text.

Mountaineer District Membership Congratulations to each and every unit in our district for having a great Back to School recruiting season. The numbers are in and as of today Mountaineer District has 531 scouts, a 10% increase over the number of youth we served last year. Pack 128 pushed us over our goal yesterday with the addition of 3 new boys to their pack. A huge Thank You to Pete Conklin and Jim Lyons for many hours of Boy Talks in all the schools. If you have a school open house, back to school fair, community event or festival that we can have a booth or table at let me know to further our recruiting efforts … remember recruiting is YEAR ROUND.
