Unit Abstract

This unit is an introduction to digital photography and is intended to enable learners to explore basic techniques, equipment and materials in order to produce digital photographs.

Project/Assignment Brief:In this unit you will have the opportunity to produce creative photographic images. You will experiment using photographic equipment and techniques. The images will be around different themes eg Documentary, Fashion, Photojournalism, Travel Photography etc and will be for a submission for a magazine of your choosing.

On completion of this unit a learner should:

1.Understand different applications of photography 2.Know how to use photographic equipment and employ photographic techniques 3.Be able to plan and produce photographic images for a specified purpose 4. Be able to reflect upon photographic work.

Tasks You must complete the following Task(s) and meet the requirements of the Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria indicated below.

Task 1: 1.Understand different applications of photography (P1, M1, D1)

Produce and present a prezzi presentation or an illustrated videocast (use found footage, narrated by you, graphsics video clips etc), which looks at different applications of photography. Focus on at least two areas of photography, you can choose from the following:

• War photography• Fashion Photography• Music Photography• Wedding photography• Product Photography• Architectural Photography• Travel Photography• Fine Art Photography• Documentary Photography• Forensic Photography.

For each you need to explain the process of how the photographer works.

● Where does their work come from? ● How do they make money? (Commission, Royalty Sales, Freelance, Salaried

etc)● What is the purpose of their photography? (Inform, educate, entertain,

promote, etc)● Where are their photographs used? (magazines; newspapers; hoardings;

books; web pages; CD ROMs; for individual clients; galleries)● How do the photographs affect the viewer?

Tip: Give detailed specific examples of photographers and photographs, to back up your analysis. Also critically evaluate the uses of photography, is one application better than another? Do these two things and your grade will improve!

TASK 2: Know how to use photographic equipment and employ photographic techniques (P2, M2, D2)

1. Produce a series of photographs which demonstrate ‘Frozen Movement.’ Upload it to your blog and describe which settings you have used.

2. Produce a series of photographs which demonstrate, ‘Blurred Movement.’ Upload it to your blog and describe which settings you have used to achieve this affect.

3. Produce a series of photographs which demonstrate, ‘Shallow depth of field,’ upload it to your blog and describe which setting you have used to achieve this affect.

4. Produce a series of photographs which demonstrate, ‘Large Depth of Field,’ upload it to your blog and describe which settings you have used to achieve this.

5. Produce a series of photographs which demonstrate, interesting framing technique. Upload the photograph to your blog and explain why you think it is interesting.

6. Write a blog entry which explains what the rule of thirds is and produce a photograph using this framing technique.

7. Produce a series of photographs which use Light graffiti.

Task3: Be able to plan and produce photographic images for a specified purpose (P3, M3, D3)

You are a freelance photographer and you want to pitch your ideas for a photo feature for their magazine. You need to produce a series of images to feature in the magazine or newspaper of your choosing. The images must be in keeping with the magazines style and be appropriate for their target audience.

1. Create a mood board of images that you like: Collect together images of your favourite pop stars, celebrities, products etc. Think about what you like about each of the images, consider, mood framing, composition, style, editing, audience appeal etc. Include images which relate to your chosen magazines target audience. Think about articles and interviews which might need your photographic skills.

2. Create a mind map of ideas for a photographic feature for the magazine.

3. Record a video pitch for the editor about your idea for a photo feature. ○ Explain your ideas in detail. ○ Use your mood board and mind maps to help support your pitch. ○ Explain why your ideas are appropriate for a magazine. ○ Explain technically how you are going to achieve the shots.

4. Shoot and Edit your images and upload them to your blog.

Task 4. Be able to reflect upon photographic work. P4, M4, D4

1. Comment on at least five other peoples photographic work on their blogs. Consider what elements of their photos that you like and why and also what areas could be improved on.

2. Taking on board other peoples comments give a presentation about your work. Consider your feedback that you have been given, aspects of the images that went well and also things which you could improve on. How appropriate are your images for your chosen magazine. How likely do you think it is that a picture editor would use your images? If you had the opportunity what would you do differently next time?
