Sharing the “Good News” of Greenawalds

The United Church of Christ Greenawalds was founded in the community of Greenawalds, a residential suburb of the city of Allentown, PA. German immigrants and Pennsylvania Dutch residents established a Sunday School to teach religion to their children. The school was built on donated land from the Greenawald family and constructed with hard work and labor from residents of the community. The present church has a 104-year history of worship and the desire to serve God in this place. Originally an Evangelical & Reformed Church, it became part of the United Church of Christ in 1957. The church experienced significant growth in membership as well as involvement in the life of the church during the 1950s and 1960s and served as the activity center for the community. Surrounding farmland was converted to a more residential neighborhood with many families joining the church and swelling the membership rolls to approximately 600 members during the late 1980s. The membership today is considerably smaller due to the aging of the community and also of our members. Children of the church grew up and relocated. Demographic, social and cultural changes have created a challenge to keep active membership strong. At this time we are searching for a part-time pastor who will work with our very dedicated group of lay leaders who use their genuine friendships and teamwork to accomplish the mission and goals for the church. This document conveys the highlights of our faith journey as a congregation. We believe that the church is really “the people” which we cannot attach to these written pages. Our church strives to be an example of a family living in a Christ-like community while giving of our service. We take pride in being a warm and caring congregation, open to new and creative ideas, and welcome all who walk through our doors. Through various styles of pastoral leadership, we have learned to respect diversity and difference of opinions, to accept many changes and then work together to further God’s kingdom. It is our hope and expectation that the person reading this profile will become interested in learning more about who we are at UCC Greenawalds.

MISSION STATEMENT The mission of our congregation is to be a community that sustains continuous change and transformation as we grow in the likeness of Christ and the image of God. We will endeavor to do this in the following ways:

Through worship, education, study and fellowship, we will empower and send Christian people to serve God in the community.

Continue to push ourselves to be open to people of all backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities.

Exhibit care, love, understanding, and hospitality to everyone.

Establish ourselves as a known presence in the community.

It is our intent to ensure that all of our ministries, programs, and life together have a clear connection to these statements. U.C.C. Greenawalds Constitution/Bylaws, 2010

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

MISSION OUTREACH We are a mission-minded congregation, reaching out to help our brothers and sisters in need. It is our understanding that Mission is the work of the church of Jesus Christ in today’s world. Our mission team provides education, awareness, and promotes various opportunities for members to be engaged in outreach experiences. The church endorses a selected service emphasis for each calendar year. We faithfully support Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM) locally, nationally, and globally. Members volunteer with the soup kitchen, food banks, and numerous non-profit and social service agencies in the community. Many members are actively involved and support mission projects including the following:

1. Meals on Wheels 8. KidsPeace

2. Ecumenical Food Bank 9. Rescue Mission for homeless men

3. Ecumenical Soup Kitchen 10. Turning Point for women in crisis

4. Habitat for Humanity 11. UCC Disaster/Church World Service

5. Family Promise Homeless Initiative* 12. Phoebe Ministries for the elderly

6. Amigos de Guatemala Partnership 13. Back Bay Mission

7. Poverty Resolutions 14. Lehigh County Conference of Churches

*Family Promise of the Lehigh County is one initiative currently being developed to address homelessness

in our area. UCC Greenawalds was the first church to sign on as a participating organization.

The Mission Team is planning a mission trip in 2017 for members to aid residents of West Virginia affected by the catastrophic floods of June 2016. Members have participated in meaningful mission trips to Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, MS in 2010 and 2012 through their own fundraising efforts. Although the enthusiasm for mission outreach usually comes from within the membership, it is our hope that the pastor will participate and support the mission activities currently in place and offer suggestions for additional community outreach.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.

COMMUNITY CHARACTERISTICS

UCC Greenawalds is located in South Whitehall Township, adjacent to the City of Allentown, and is part of the Lehigh Valley region of Eastern Pennsylvania. The Greenawalds neighborhood is chiefly residential with an elementary school and a park. This park includes three youth league baseball fields, a playground, one basketball court, and a walking trail. In a survey, members characterized our community as small, quiet, friendly, warm, welcoming, and a nice place to live. UCC Greenawalds is the only place of worship in the neighborhood, but some other nearby churches include: First Baptist Church (1 mile), Redeemer Lutheran Church (1.9 miles), Asbury Methodist Church (2.4 miles), Calvary Temple (2.5 miles), Jordan UCC (3.2 miles), and St. John’s UCC (3.2 miles). South Whitehall Township South Whitehall Township (est. population 19,442, median age 48) is located in the Parkland School District. Educational services include district elementary schools, middle schools, and the high school building, district office buildings, and the Parkland Community Library. Health services include Lehigh Valley Health Network, Coordinated Health Network, St. Luke's Health Network, and Sacred Heart Health buildings, as well as several pharmacies (Rite-Aid, Walgreens, Target, and Weis Markets), and several veterinarian offices. Utilities, professional, and business services include PPL Corp., several Certified Public Accountant offices, Morgan Stanley office, law offices, security services, printing services, advertising companies, management corporations, consulting firms, and many others too numerous to mention in area office complexes. Financial institutions include Lehigh Valley Federal Credit Union, TD Bank, Prudential Financial, Wells Fargo Bank, BB&T, 1st Trust Bank, ESSA Bank and Trust, and a few others in a 6-mile radius. Other local industry and community services include GEO Specialty Chemicals, Alpo Dog Foods, South Whitehall Township Police, and Township offices, and the Greenawalds and Woodlawn Fire Companies. Recently, a permanent memorial featuring an I-beam pulled from ground zero was dedicated at the Greenawalds Fire Company. One building project on the horizon is a senior residential development, located about 3 miles from UCC Greenawalds. There may be some additional business growth in the Township, but most land is already well assigned to residential, agricultural, or commercial use. South Whitehall Township has an inviting and well-maintained park system, which includes several small neighborhood parks and playgrounds. The premier park is Covered Bridge Park (2.5 miles from UCC Greenawalds), situated between two historic covered bridges along Jordan Creek. It includes several sports fields, picnic pavilions, a playground, a handball court, disc golf course, and fishing. Summer concerts are held there, and in the past the church has hosted annual picnics there as well. The City of Allentown offers even more, including nearby parks such as Cedar Beach Park, The Rose Garden, Trexler Park, and the Lehigh Parkway. All of these include walking and biking trails.

CONGREGATIONAL LIFE AND IMPORTANT EVENTS UCC Greenawalds is one body with many parts. We are a faithful, discerning, supportive, excited, and spiritual congregation, a church of many strengths and positive qualities as a current survey revealed: A group of very faithful, active members (lay leadership)

A wonderfully talented choir The congregation rallies together to meet the needs of the challenges presented A caring prayerful congregation

Sunday services are held at 10:30am. Mid-June to September our service moves to 9:30am for the summer. Communion is served on the first Sunday of every month and on special holidays and occasions. In the past a contemporary music service was offered on the third Sunday of every month. Other special services include reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows and combined Lenten Services with UCC churches. Our Ministries/Fellowship events include:

Sunday School Class Women’s Guild Coffee hour on Sunday mornings Greenawalds Nursery School Adult choir LIFT (Ladies in Faith Together) Committee participation Cub Scouts Dining groups Boy Scouts Elder groups Quilting Group Game nights Public Meeting Place Breakfasts/Luncheons Rental for Parties

The most important faith experiences or events in the history of our church took place in:

1970 – Building a new sanctuary, traveling youth choir, and contemporary worship service

1980s – Sudden growth in membership and activity with a dynamic pastor, Bible study series, and youth mission trips

2010 & 2012 – Mission trips to Biloxi

2012 – 100th Anniversary Celebration

2013 – GIFT (Growing in Faith Together) program initiated by the Spiritual Council to increase awareness, personal evaluation, and faith commitment

The most challenging faith experiences or events in the life of our church:

2012 – 2013 – Budget crisis and the decision to maintain a full time vs. part time pastor and support of that budget through reduction of salaries. The congregation stepped up to increase financial giving.

2013 – 2014 – Spiritual Council review of inactive members resulting in a reduction of our membership rolls. It offered us the opportunity to reach out to inactive members.

2015 – Loss of the pastor, secretary (deceased), and music director all in the same year. This necessitated tremendous commitment of lay leaders and financial support from the congregation.

2016 – Congregational discussions and meetings resulted in a vote to seek a part-time pastor.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Sunday School on Sunday morning: We have used various educational resources, including Shine, published by Brethren Press.

Adult Discussion Class on Sunday morning: Discussions are centered on current topics, thought-provoking videos, with input from the pastor.

For Confirmation: Students have used the book Way To Live: Christian Practice for Teens, by Dorothy C. Bass and Don C. Richter (Upper Room Books, 2002). It was selected by our previous pastor and continued by the two spiritual council members handling the confirmation class in the interim period.

At the present time, there are educational opportunities available for school-aged children (Kindergarten through Middle School) and adults.

In the past, our pastor supported our education leaders and gave input on curriculum, visited classes periodically, attended or led adult classes occasionally, led Bible/book study, and assisted confirmation leaders as needed.

Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance Proverbs 1:5

CHURCH PROPERTY UCC Greenawalds is a 38’ x 72’ multi-level stone and plaster structure which incorporates the original church building. A new asphalt shingle roof was installed in 2015. The second floor includes classrooms, offices, and a conference room. The Nursery School classrooms, public bathrooms, storage areas, and the boiler room are on the ground level. A 42’ x 17’ L-shaped structure serves as a connecting link to the Sanctuary and includes common and social areas, and the Pastor’s office with powder room. The Sanctuary is a 43’ x 82’ block, steel siding, and brick structure. It includes the narthex and handicapped accessible bathroom. There are 28 cushioned pews with seating for approximately 250 people. Four additional pews provide seating for 28 choir members. Music is provided by a 1980s Allen electronic organ and a Yamaha baby grand piano. Air conditioning was recently installed in the Sanctuary and Narthex. On the church property is a 26’ x 41’ storage shed with a wood frame, steel siding and an asphalt roof. It is primarily used for property equipment storage and shared with the Boy Scouts. Also on the property is a 26’ x 40’ fenced in play yard for nursery school use. The previous parsonage (2319 Albright Avenue, Allentown, PA 18104) is also on the church property. The house is connected to the church by an 8’ x 14’ basement link which provides a shared waterline. The 26’ x 34’ split level is currently a single family rental property. This house is wood frame with brick and aluminum siding, front and back porches, and oil/hot water heat. There are 9 rooms including living and family areas, kitchen, 4 bedrooms, and a bathroom.

Now we are half of what we were in terms of membership numbers. As the community grew older, so did our members. Children of the church grew up and relocated. CONGREGATIONAL EXPECTATIONS AND FUTURE HOPES

Our Discovery Team spent a great amount of time and energy urging our members to reflect on our past, present, and future. Using a variety of activities, games, and discussion groups, the team led members in a series of self-study sessions. The following is a list of some of the hopes and possibilities for UCC Greenawalds as seen by our members.

- Share resources with another congregation “to accomplish more”. This included mention of shared holiday or special services, joint community outreach, combined mission trips, and small groups.

- Grow in awareness of neighborhood needs, thereby strengthening the

relationship and presence of UCC Greenawalds in our immediate community. Ideas included more community invited events, fliers and information kits, and welcome bags for new neighbors.

- Expand our mission focus. Many participants mentioned hopes for the success of Family Promise and

mission trips to areas outside of our immediate community.

- Encourage and support each other as part of the GIFT program (Growing In Faith Together). Ideas include support and/or discussion groups to promote fellowship and Bible/book study groups for education and effective communication with inactive members.

- Explore needs and options for leadership training and mentoring of future leaders.

- Reestablish our music program (we recently hired a new music director).

In a survey, members identified some other trends. Some wrote that the church will decline in membership as the congregation ages, while others believe young people will return to the fold with a new enthusiasm. Others mentioned that various non-Christian families are moving to the area. Members by and large agree there will be a continued focus on mission, reaching out to neighbors, and ministering to the senior population. Some believe communication and working together with other churches will increase, perhaps sparking an interest to combine with another congregation. Other congregants think there will be a trend surrounding new ways to worship that will help the church stay relevant in busy times.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,

“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

We created this profile to provide a snapshot of the family of faith at UCC Greenawalds. It reflects our joys, accomplishments, our struggles, and our vision.
