From Pastor Sharon

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

October is the time for our Stewardship Campaign this year, culminating with our

Stewardship Celebration Service on Sunday, October 28. During the celebration service

you will have the opportunity to fill out a commitment card for your 2013 tithes and

offerings. The commitment cards will be dedicated at the altar during the worship

service.

For folks who cannot be present in worship on October 28, pledge cards will be mailed

to you after that date. Visitors and guests in worship on October 28 are not to feel

obligated to fill out a commitment card; this is for the UMC of Yucaipa family and those who feel connected to it.

“Money Matter$” is the sermon series for October, inspired by the writings of Mike Slaughter and the following

biblical passages:

Oct. 7 Matthew 19:16-26 “Money Matter$: Devotion”

Oct. 14 2 Kings 4:1-7 “Money Matter$: Debt-free”

Oct. 21 Matthew 25: 14-30 “Money Matter$: Discipline”

Oct. 28 Malachi 3:10-11 “Money Matter$: More than Enough”

Many of us live with feelings of fear and insecurity these days, for a variety of reasons. Many of us struggle with

debt. Many of us long for financial freedom but don’t quite know how to get there. We all want to claim God’s

truth for ourselves: the truth that there is more than enough to abundantly provide for all our needs, for all our

family’s needs, and for the needs of our church’s ministry for God in the world.

I invite you to read the Bible passages that I will be preaching on in October. I invite you to reflect and pray

earnestly about where God is leading you in your financial life. I invite you to pray for your church’s mission and

the financial needs of that mission. God has a plan for you. God has a plan for this church. Money matters – as a

matter of food & shelter, as a matter of mission, and as a matter of faith.

Your financial freedom matters to God. In October, we will take a deep breath together, and look at what God has

in store for us, as individuals and as a church family dedicated to “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the

transformation of the world.”

See you in church!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Sharon

UMC 101 The Liturgical Seasons

Have you ever wondered about the brightly colored satin

bits in the choir sashes, draped over the pulpit and on the altar? I recently learned that these items are called

“paraments” and the parament color corresponds to the liturgical season being observed.

This month’s UMC 101 will give a brief description of liturgical seasons, what they celebrate, and their proper

parament colors.

Advent – celebrates the coming or birth of Christ. Advent is the beginning of the church new year (any day between November 27 and December 3; always contains four Sundays; ends Christmas Eve). The traditional liturgical color is

purple (violet), blue is gaining popularity.

Christmas – celebrates the anniversary of the birth of Jesus. Christmas begins Christmas Day and lasts for 12 days. The liturgical color is white.

Epiphany – celebrates the manifestation of the divine nature of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi. Epiphany begins the first Sunday in January and varies in length depending on the date set for Easter. It lasts until Septuagesima Sunday, 64 days before Easter. For the first and last Sundays, the liturgical color is white, for Ash Wednesday, it is purple, and for the other days, it is green.

Lent – observes a season of penitence. Lent is the season lasting forty-six days (not counting Sundays) beginning Ash Wednesday and ending the eve of Easter. The liturgical color is purple (violet). On Good Friday, black is substituted. Within the Lenten Season, we observe the following sacred

events: Ash Wednesday – addresses sin and death. The day ashes are rubbed on foreheads symbolizing that we are dust, and to dust we shall return, but with God’s grace we can learn to live this life more fully, embracing our sinfulness, allowing God to transform us.

Palm Sunday – signals the upcoming end of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week. The day

commemorates the spreading of palms and clothing in Jesus’ path as He entered Jerusalem prior to His crucifixion. Holy/Maundy Thursday –

the word “Maundy” comes from the Latin word for ‘command’ (man datum) and refers to the command Jesus gave His disciples to love one another. Maundy Thursday commemorates the day on which Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, sharing a meal with them, which we call the Last Supper. Good Friday – a day of mourning. Good Friday is the holy day of meditation for Christians, celebrated the Friday before Easter. It commemorates the suffering and death on the cross – the Crucifixion of Jesus at Calvary.

Easter – celebrates the commemoration of the Resurrection of Christ. Easter begins on Easter Sunday and continues for fifty days until Pentecost. The liturgical color is white and gold.

Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and women followers of Jesus, fifty days after Easter, and ten days after Ascension Thursday. Pentecost is longest season of the church year: it lasts until the first Sunday in Advent. After the ascension of Jesus, the apostles having retired to a house at Jerusalem, they there waited for the Holy Spirit, which Jesus had promised. (Read Acts 2:1-3) The Season of Pentecost celebrates that first Pentecost when all those who believed in Jesus Christ were gathered awaiting the coming of the Holy Ghost. Their being on one accord was a result of things unseen that created an atmosphere celebrating their differences, and made them one. The liturgical color for the first Sunday is red; Trinity, Christ the King, All Saints Day is white. The liturgical color for all other Sundays following Pentecost is green.

The 100th Anniversary Time Capsule Project

For our anniversary year wrap-up celebration on November 11, we’re planting a Time Capsule. We are taking suggestions from groups in the church as to what should go in the capsule. If you have an idea, please share it with your group leader. Or, fill out the form below. If you’re not part of a group, now is a great time to join one! Contact Laurie Pertile, Admin Council Chair, for group ideas. Contact Mark Pertile, 100th Anniversary Committee Chair, for questions or input about the time capsule.

Here is my suggestion for an item(s) to be placed in the 100th Anniversary Time Capsule on November 11, 2012:

Royale in Calimesa at 7:30 A.M. October speakers will be Dave Moore and Matt Harward who recently climbed Mt. Whitney. They will share pictures and stories of their adventure. And, they will tell us about their plans for another trip in the near future. Kafe Royale is in a shopping center at 1007 Calimesa Blvd. See you there.

Stater’s SCRIP With the holidays fast approaching, the United Methodist Men remind you to be sure and purchase plenty of Stater Brothers scrip!

Cereal, Cereal The Second Sunday of each month is designated Cereal Sunday, sponsored by your United Methodist Men. Even if you forget your cereal on the second Sunday, bring it any time and place it in the Narthex. Let’s keep in mind those in the community who need our donations of both cereal and scrip. The next Cereal Sunday is October 14th and the one after that is November 12th.

“100 for the 100th” . . . It’s Not Too Late!!

On November 11, 2012, we will wrap up our centennial year. A century of

ministry in this place! What a legacy of joy and faith and gratitude.

On the day of the big 100th

Anniversary bash on November 13, 2011, the

congregation was invited to make “100 for the 100th

” promises. AND…It’s

not too late!! If you have not yet made your “100 for the 100th

” promise, you

may send your promise in to the church office, or fill out a card in worship

and place it in the offering plate.

Here are some examples of possible promises:

Serve 100 meals to the homeless

Plant 100 daffodils (or trees, or…)

Pray 100 prayers for peace (or for healing, or for the Church, or …)

Send 100 cards to the sick or the lonely or the forgotten

Give 100 hours of service to a Church ministry or a charity

Organize 100 of my friends to do something cool for Christ

Sharing about our “100 for the 100th” experiences will be a part of the

festivities on November 11th

!

“Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands.” Psalm 90:17

Speaking of the 100th

, don’t forget about the

100th Anniversary Luncheon

What would a church family event be without food? Rumors are, the Koinonia Sunday School Class will be making some of their delicious pulled pork again this year.

Yum! Watch for news about menu and tickets. Bring your friends! Bring your family! Let’s make this a homecoming celebration for friends old and new.
