LETTER FROM PASTOR REBECCA
I can remember my first history class I ever had, and the teacher asking us why it is important to study
history. The question continues to be asked in different circles because it is an important question. It re-
minds us we have something to learn from the past about what strengths we have, what we value, what mis-
takes not to make (if possible). Spending time in the stories of the past can help us to see the present more
clearly.
Such are the reasons for the church’s Advent tradition of observing a
Jesse Tree. The prophet Isaiah said, “the royal line of David is like a tree that
has been cut down; but just as new branches sprout from a stump, so a new
king will arise from among David’s descendants,” (Isaiah 11:1). Thus, through
the season of Advent, Christians daily read accounts of our spiritual ancestors,
the ancestors of Jesus, to see more clearly what God has been doing through-
out history, and continues to do through Jesus. The stories of our ancestors
can indeed help us prepare to experience and appreciate the gift of Jesus. Only
these stories can also help us to see our own reality through a new lens of
God’s activity.
I can remember growing up, and every night during Advent we gath-
ered as a family around the dinner table, not only to eat, but to light the Ad-
vent wreath and read a story from the long line of Jesus’ ancestors. I truly be-
lieve this Advent tradition was a strong influence in my life as I came to know
the stories of the Bible in all their richness and diversity. It gave me a solid
foundation for ongoing learning.
I am excited to be able to invite you to discover the rich tradition of the
Jesse Tree for yourselves this Advent season. Join us for worship as each week
we revisit our spiritual roots and hear the stories of Jesus’ ancestors. Plan to
come to a special activity on Sunday, November 30 in
which participants are invited to make a Jesse Tree for
their home. May our experiences this Advent help us
to celebrate the past and embrace the present, both
as rich gifts from God.
Blessings, Pastor Rebecca

CHURCH CONFERENCE
Sunday, December 7, 2014 5:30 PM
So often it seems that our church conferences are a time to simply ap-
prove reports, affirm new leadership, and offer our support for the new
church budget. This year, however, we are facing an important decision.
District Superintendent Sue D’Allesio will be leading our church conference as we decide whether to approve the
Vision Team recommendation to become one church with two campuses. Everyone is invited and strongly encour-
aged to attend this meeting, but only professing members will be able to vote on the proposal. Our time together
with begin with a potluck at 5:30 PM, and business to begin at approximately 6:15 PM. If you need assistance with
transportation to attend this meeting please call the church office (833-7308) so that we can make arrangements.
SPRC UPDATE
The church service days and times are initiated by SPRC. The current service times: 9:00 AM Traditional service at the Seymour church on Sundays and 6:30 PM Contemporary service at the Cicero church on Mondays continues from the summer schedule as directed by SPRC. SPRC discussed in great detail the options, pros and cons of differ-ent schedules before making this decision. Both the administrative councils from the Seymour & Cicero churches approved this proposal by SPRC before implementing the continuation of these days and times.
We certainly will be listening to conversations regarding the schedule and will continue monitoring and discussing it, as there may be adjustments that need to be considered. Thank you, Debbie Baker, SPRC Chairperson

COMMUNITY ECUMENICAL THANKSGIVING SERVICE Wednesday, November 26
7 PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Seymour
Join the community as we worship together at the annual ecumenical Thanksgiving service. The service will begin at 7 PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 349 N. Main St., Seymour, with a pie fellowship to follow. Join us as we give thanks for all God has provided!
LAS POSADAS Saturday, December 20
3 PM
“Las Posadas” means “The Inn or Shelter.” The observance reenacts Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter as they traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem in the days before Christ Jesus was born. Although Las Posadas originated in Mexico, it has become popular in the U.S. Join us as we accompany Mary and Joseph in their quest for lodging while we sing traditional Christmas carols. Our journey will culminate with refreshments in the fellowship hall and a piñata for the children. The piñata is an essential part of the Las Posadas celebration The object of fun is to give the children a stick to break the piñata so the candy that is inside falls out and everyone scrambles to collect the goodies. This is a wonderful family outing, and a great way to prepare for Christmas. Our journey will begin in the Seymour UMC parking lot. Hope to see you there!

The Gift of a Life
The prophet Isaiah speaks about the coming King, a descendant of David. He
says that from the stump of Jesse a kingdom will arise in which the rights of the helpless
are defended, peace is evident among all, evil is not present. On Christmas Eve, when we celebrate the birth
of this new King, we will give witness to his Kingdom through the gifts we bring. Unless otherwise designated,
all of our Christmas Eve offerings will be given to support the local food pantry and Imagine No Malaria cam-
paign. (It is our hope and trust that these gifts will only exceed the faithful giving of our members towards our
churches’ general ministries.)
Families live in fear of losing a loved one from a very preventable disease; 650,000 people die every
year from malaria. Teamed with the Bill Gates Foundation, who recognized the strong network and resources
of the United Methodist Church, the church has listened to the African bishops who, in response to being
asked what they needed most, said "stop malaria." With only $10, a life can be spared by providing a mosqui-
to net, training for health workers, and increased resources. As we celebrate the gift of Jesus, a precious life
given so we might live, imagine how many lives you can save. Imagine a world with no malaria. Please help us
to share the gift of Christ this Christmas season.

YOUTH 2015 “GO ON”
June 22-28, 2015 Orlando, Florida
What does it mean to ‘Go On’? The Wesleyan Movement began because of the foundational idea
that faith produces inward and outward holiness. In other words, the faith you have calls you to put it into action.
When you go on to take action because of your faith, it is one way to show God that you do love your neighbor.
Learning about God, Jesus, the church, etc. are all good things – but when you go on to serve others because of
what you’ve learned – that’s when you become a disciple who can change the world.
Join United Methodist youth from all over the country at
this summer’s youth gathering. It is so big it only happens every
four years. Activities include concerts, workshops, late night fun
and hotel amenities (pool, basketball, volleyball, fitness center!).
Youth age 12 and up can attend. Sign up in the office by Sunday,
January 25, 2015. The cost is $125, nonrefundable if no one else
can take the spot. The maximum a family would pay is $300. Visit
www.youth2015.com for more information.

delight of many! The main attraction will be over 20 crafters and vendors
throughout the church. If you would like to make a monetary donation or

Our Soup and Sandwich Supper was once again successful. A big thank
you goes out to all who donated food, to those who worked that day and
to those who attended the meal. It is a big undertaking for our small
group to put on the supper, and we could not do it without all of our vol-
unteers!
Women’s Day in the Pulpit will be Mon., Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. Collette
Wilichowski will be our speaker. Be sure to attend and support our ladies.
As the Christmas season approaches, we have several
projects to remember. The first is the Shoe Boxes for
the Samaritan’s Purse organization. They will be due
November 17. Information will be available soon at
church or at samaritanspurse.com. The second project
is the mitten tree. The tree will be at church Novem-
ber 13, and you can donate mittens, hats & scarves
for the Salvation Army. Our third project is for Com-
munity 2000. Instead of adopting a family this year, we are considering
donating supplies that will be needed for their Christmas projects. We’ll
have a list for you as soon as one is available.
And mark your calendars for Tues-
day, December 2 at 6:30 p.m. as
we again enjoy the Cicero Church
Christmas Potluck. We hope you
and your family will join us.
You’re invited to join us as a guest at any of our meetings, which are held
in the basement of the Cicero Church at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting is
Thursday, November 6. Hope to see you there.

WOMEN’S WORK GROUP POSITION AVAILABLE
Since March 1993, I’ve been co-chairperson of a women’s work group, responsible for coordinating funeral lunch-
eons. After this year, I will no longer be available to serve in this position. I’ll be helping to care for my grandson,
due November 8, my birthday. Please contact the church at 833-7308, or Nancy Brinkman at 833-2614, if you’re
interested to co-chair with Jean Albert. Call me if you’d like to know what’s expected as co-chairperson. It’s an im-
portant ministry we offer to grieving families and it’s an easy job with other women of the church helping you.

OUR KIDS UPDATE
The Our Kids program is in full swing! Over 190 kids are enrolled in the program and receiving the blessing of a weekly snack pack. The Our Kids team would like to thank all those who have helped us get up and running this year through dona-tions of apples and money and volunteering their time to make cinch sacks, find boxes for us, pack and deliver cinch sacks, help shop, pick apples, write notes to the kids, or fix the refrigerator. We would also like to say a big thank you to Deanna DeBruin for all she does for us. She is a great resource for us and is a constant source of sup-port and help. Thanks, Deanna!! This program provides cinch sacks filled with nutritious snacks to students in the Seymour School District who are at risk of experiencing weekend hunger or food insecurity. For more details on volunteer opportunities or for a list of items to donate, go to www.seymour-umc.org and click on the Our Kids menu. As the holiday season approaches, we ask you to keep Our Kids in mind as you think about holiday giving, as we like to provide extra food items in the cinch sacks over the extended Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. The cost to fill one cinch sack is $4.00. You can sponsor a child for the entire school year for $150.00. To make a donation, make checks payable to Seymour United Methodist Church and include "Our Kids" on the memo line. PROPOSED HIGH-VOLTAGE TRANSMISSION LINES
“The United Methodist Church has a long history of concern for social justice. Its members have often taken forth-right positions on controversial issues involving Christian principles.” The Social Principles are one sign of this history as it is a compilation of reflections by the General Conference on contemporary social issues. They are an invitation for United Meth-odists to recognize the relationship between faith and practice on a wide variety of issues facing us in our lives.
Certainly one area of concern is the environment. In our social creed we claim, “we affirm the natural world as God’s handiwork and dedicate ourselves to its preservation, enhancement, and faithful use by humankind.” As many of you know from reading the newspaper, American Transmission Company (ATC) is proposing to build two high-voltage transmis-sion lines in our area. The new lines will be 138 kV and 345 kV, and, if approved, will pass on either side of Seymour, affect-ing many of our congregational members as landowners, including: Albert Farm, Don & Allie Gardner, Glen & Kate Schaum-berg, and many others. Only it is all Wisconsin taxpayers who will be affected as we each absorb the cost of these new lines, estimated be-tween $307 and $326 billion, depending on the chosen route. ATC is guaranteed a 40 year mortgage, amortized at 12% in-terest. Our electric bills continue to soar to pay the capital debt on the high capacity transmission system we have added in the state since 2002. However, research shows electricity usage in U.S. homes has steadily declined since 2007; in Wisconsin it is declining at an average rate of 2.5% per year. Wisconsin is currently OVER-PRODUCING electricity, so these new lines are unneeded. And though Wisconsin once ranked below the national average in electricity rates, our electric bills have soared to the highest or second highest in the Midwest. In 2013, only 10 states had electricity rates higher than Wisconsin. Take some time and have conversation with those in our congregation who this will most directly impact, and learn what they think and how they feel, but also let your voice be heard; anyone can comment on the proposal, whether land-owner or simply an interested party. To see all the information regarding the proposal, visit http://psc.wi.gov and enter 137-CE-166 in the box to “Link Directly to a Case.” The draft Environmental Impact Statement is available now, and comments can be filed online or through the mail until November 17. Mail comments to: Cindy Burtley / Docket 137-CE-166 / Public Service Commission of Wisconsin / P.O. Box 7854 / Madison, WI 53707-7854.
