STW _ 2020 _ 3

Sea Tech Week® returns this year for an amazing 12th time. The core theme of 2020’s event is ‘Observation: from seabed to space’. Why this particular theme?

The theme of this year’s event was chosen by stakehold-ers from the Campus mondial de la mer community, who are closely involved in international projects and net-works linked to observing and understanding the oceans.

Take, for example, the French Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (Shom), based in Brest. It is the world’s leading of ficial hydrographic service and this year celebrates its 300th anniversary. Space sector ap-plications are also currently experiencing major growth in Brittany, as is demonstrated by the number of the region’s companies and research laboratories involved in this field.

What impact is the health crisis having on Sea Tech Week® 2020?

The Campus mondial de la mer community wanted to go ahead with Sea Tech Week®, despite the dif ficult circumstances we are experiencing. However given the situation, we could not envisage organising the event the same way as in previous years. So we opted to make Sea Tech Week® a vir tual event, while making sure we meet the need for our region’s marine science and technology experts – principally in companies and laboratories – to be able to share ideas.

But we are not talking here about a scaled-down event! Quite the contrary. We have retained practically all the elements of Sea Tech Week®. Therefore conference-go-ers will be able to take part in more sessions than ever, participate in B2B meetings, visit the exhibition, and more.

This vir tual Sea Tech Week of fers an amazing opportu-nity to encourage participation by a wider, even more international audience.

On that note, what examples of international cooperation will Sea Tech Week® be able to highlight?

The second meeting of the Campus mondial de la mer Assembly, organised in December 2019 at Océanopolis, a unique aquarium in Europe, demonstrated the capacity of our science and technology community to extend the region’s influence internationally and to attract talent.

Following Brazil, Canada and Norway, it is Australia’s turn to take centre stage, with the focus on common areas of interest such as undersea robotics and space. Our partners from India, Quebec and the United Kingdom will also be heavily involved in the 12th Sea Tech Week®.

Do come and join us online from 12 to 16 October.

THE SEA TECH WEEK®

INTERVIEW WITH FRANÇOIS CUILLANDREFRANÇOIS CUILLANDRE, PRESIDENT OF BREST MÉTROPOLE, RESPONDS TO 3 QUESTIONS ON THE EVENT.

The def in i t ion , appl icat ion , and manag ement of mar i t ime and l i t toral publ ic pol ic ies depends on the acquis i t ion and di f f us ion of a var iet y o f data: DCSMM, DCSPEM, SNML , SNGITC, L i t toral law… Obser vat ions by satel l i tes and drones , and mar i t ime t raf f ic analyses are es sent ia l both for local author i t ies , as much for secur i t y and as for detect ing i l leg al act iv i t ies , to insure the protect ion of the env ironment and the preser vat ion of natural resources . The t raf f ic analyses also al low the ident i f icat ion of areas at r isk to help author i t ies take prevent ive measures such as the establ ishment o f speci f ic mar i t ime routes or planning mar i t ime area act iv i t ies .

WAVE AND WIND OBSERVATIONS APPLIED

TO OFFSHORE RENEWABLE ENERGIES

Improv ing k nowledg e of metocean condi t ions is crucial to opt imise the des ig n of renewable energ y recover y systems such as f loat ing wind turbines . Indeed, such machines can be exposed to ex t reme winds and waves in s torms , which can jeopardize their mechanical s t ructure . A detai led k nowledg e of meteoro-oceanic condi t ions is a lso neces sar y for fat ig ue calculat ions and the planning of mar ine operat ions . I t is therefore es sent ial to bet ter under stand and character ise these phenomena , which are ver y di f f icul t to obser ve wi th in-s i tu inst ruments . PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES

Addres s ing g lobal-scale chal leng es involv ing the mar ine env ironment rel ies on acquir ing a comprehens ive under standing of a l l o f i t s compar tments (f rom the sea f loor to the atmosphere) .
