presidents report

New Members I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter break. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the Club since Easter then a treat is in store for you, the new carpet, it looks terrifi c.

The Committee is pleased from the very positive feedback we have received from members as a result of my recent letter to you. We thank you for your feedback and for your noticeable increased patronage of the Club

over recent weeks.

We are also grateful to the members who have made donations to the Club Heritage Trust Fund. Many members were unaware of the Fund’s existence and once made aware were delighted to make a contribution. I intend to publicly acknowledge Club Heritage Fund donors in the Annual Report (name only). Please let Kim Fisher know if you do not wish to have your name published.

The very popular Sons, Daughters and Grandchildren’s Dinner was held on April 13. It was a great success and our fi rst big event with our new Head Chef (Mark Rowell-Turner). The food was superb. Lainey Loneragan again gave generously of her time to train the young folk in dining etiquette. Host for the evening, Vice President Jenny Walker, took the opportunity to remind the young diners that many of the brave military people they would hear about in upcoming Anzac Day presentations were actually members of our club.

On April 19, the Head Chef held his fi rst Club Chef ’s Table Dinner. I have been reliably informed that it was an outstanding success. Honorary Treasurer and regular Chef ’s Table attendee, Don Crombie, stated it was perhaps the best he had ever attended. Well done Mark.

On April 20, eighteen Club art enthusiasts enjoyed a morning excursion with John Donaldson of Personally Yours Tours exploring Brisbane’s hidden street art followed by a visit to a number of delightful Brisbane art galleries. Returning to the Club at 1pm, members enjoyed a relaxing lunch in the Glasgow Room. External tours remain a popular Club event and I welcome you to contact Kim Fisher with any suggestions or ideas to include on the calendar.

Like many of you, ANZAC Day for Gwenda and I started early when we attended the Brisbane Dawn Service commencing at 4.29 AM. Following breakfast at the Club I was joined by 30 members for the Club’s wreath laying at the Anzac Square Cenotaph at 09:30. Following the ANZAC Day parade, 290 members and guests attended lunch at the Club. Invited Club guests were: Senator Claire Moore (who represented the Prime Minister on the parade dais), Senator George Brandis, SC ( who represented the Leader of the Opposition on the parade dais), Club Patron, Chief Justice, The Honourable Paul de Jersey, AC, QC; MAJGEN R. Burr, DSC, AM, MVO, Commander 1st Division and Mrs Burr; BRIG G. Bilton, Commander 7 Brigade , BRIG S. Porter, Commander 11 Brigade and Mrs Porter; AIRCDRE T. Innes, Senior ADF Offi cer, Amberley and Mrs Innes; CMDR L. King, ADC, RAN, Senior Naval Offi cer Southern Queensland. I thank our wonderful staff for looking after us all so well on the day.

I draw your attention to our Club Cellar wine sales contained in this edition of Club News. We are releasing many fi ne wines for your enjoyment.

Coming events not to be missed include Trivia Dinner, May Terrace Jazz and Grill and the Queensland Day Luncheon. Gwenda and I hope to see many members at the Club over the coming month.

Kind regardsDennis ScanlanPresident

Penfolds Wine DinnerTime: 7pmCost: $160

Don’t miss the Wine Dinner of the Year. We welcome Wine Maker, Stephanie Dutton as our special guest for the evening.

Stephanie’s relationship with Penfolds started in 2007 at the historical heartland of Penfolds, Magill Estate in Adelaide. “Just to be involved is an honour. I feel a strong custodial responsibility and loyalty being attached to the Penfolds winemaking team. The experience certainly isn’t lost on me, no part of it is taken for granted.” Stephanie came to winemaking after discovering the magic and craft of great wine while working in fi ne dining restaurants throughout university. Since then, she has fashioned an impressive mix of skills, practice and qualifi cations to secure her role as a fi ne wine specialist.

Stephanie’s passion for her current role as Penfolds Ambassador lies not only in being a member of the team that makes iconic wines such as Grange, nor to work in the same stable as winemaking icons Ray Beck and with the late Max Schubert, but the chance to be able to share stories of the new, emerging and innovative wines from Penfolds with wine enthusiasts, restaurateurs and media both here and abroad.

The evening will feature an exquisite 5 course dinner crafted by Chef Mark with accompanying Penfold wines, three of which have been hand selected from the Club cellar. As this event will be a sell-out, early reservations are recommended.

Cost inclusions: 5 course dinner and table wine, and a most memorable member experience.

member services

Town and Country MembersThe bulk of Club Members are categorised as either Town or Country Members. Town Members permanently reside within 50 kilometres of the Brisbane GPO and Country Members permanently reside outside 50 kilometres from the Brisbane GPO. Members residing interstate or overseas may be categorised as Country Members if there is reasonable access to a reciprocal Club. Where such reasonable access is not available, the category of Visiting (Remote) Membership is available. Town and country Members are further sub-categorised as Service or Civilian Members depending on whether the Member has ever held commissioned rank in the Australian or an Allied Defence Force. There is no difference in subscription rates between Service and Civilian Members.

Active Serving Offi cerThis category is defi ned as an offi cer currently serving in the ADF as part of the PMF or the Active Reserve, or be an offi cer serving in the Standby Reserve but currently contracted to serve on Continuous Full Time Service or under the provisions of the Defence Act (Section 50). A concessionary rate of subscription applies to this category.

Associate MemberThis category applies to a person who is the spouse or partner, widow or widower of a Club Member or the child of a Member aged between 18-30 years. A concessionary rate of subscription applies and no Entrance Fee is payable. Associate Members enjoy all the privileges of Membership except that they cannot vote at General Meetings of Members or stand for election to the Club Committee.

Senior MemberThis category applies to a person who has been a Member

for a period or periods totalling not less than 35 years. A concessionary rate of subscription applies. This concessionary rate is applied automatically by the Club based on our Membership records.

Retired MembersA person who has been a Town or Country Member for a period or periods totalling not less than 10 years and who is permanently retired from the workforce may be categorised as a Retired Member. A concessionary rate of subscription applies but is dependant on the Member providing advice to the Club of the change in employment status.

Perpetual MembersPerpetual Membership is available to Town or Country Members aged 55 years or more. Members wishing to transfer to this category will be required to pay a once only subscription the equivalent of ten times the current annual subscription applicable to the Member. For example, a current Town Member whose 2010/11 subscription is $580 per annum would be required to pay $5,800 to be categorised as a Perpetual Member. However, a Perpetual Member pays no further subscriptions during their lifetime. Perpetual Membership may be attractive to some current or new Members, aged 55 years or more, who are geographically stable and who anticipate being able and desirous of utilising the Club’s facilities over the next 10 years or more. The subscription applicable to Perpetual Membership is non refundable and non-transferable.

If you are interested in discussing these Membership categories in more detail, please contact Membership & Member Services Manager, Kim Fisher on 3834 3625 and she will be pleased to assist.

Membership CategoriesWith annual Membership subscriptions falling due in June, it seems appropriate to refresh Members’ awareness of the different categories of Membership available at the Club and the varying amounts of subscription that apply to different categories.

Literary Club ReviewThe Year of the HareThe “Year of the Hare” is one of more than 30 novels by Arto Paasilinna. It was fi rst published in 1975 as Jäniksen vuosi, but was not published in English until 1995. The book has been translated into 18 languages, awarded three international prises, and has resulted in two fi lms.

The book is a fanciful tale of the adventures of a journalist Vatanen who drops out of society. Returning from an assignment with his photographer, their car sideswipes a young hare. Vatanen impulsively leaves the car to search for the wounded animal in the woods. When he doesn’t return, the photographer leaves. Vatanen fi nding the hare carefully tends for it during the night and establishes a bond with it. The more he thought about his life, wife, and job the gloomier he would become, while the more he allowed himself to enjoy his surroundings in the woods, the friendly villagers and the quiet companionship of the hare the happier he became. Seemingly without thinking about it he makes arrangements to separate himself from civilisation.

Once his links have been cut he travels from place to place throughout Finland during all four seasons. With the hare as his main company and the interactions with the people that he meets providing many humorous light episodes the book provides easy reading together with interesting perspectives of Finish culture of the 1970’s.

The book appeared to contain many layers of meaning with some variations in interpretation by different members of the literary group leading to extensive discussion.

Reciprocal Feedback:I have recently returned from London. The stay at the Naval and Military Club (The In and Out Club) in St James Square was a highlight. The location was fabulous – just a minutes’ walk to Pall Mall, Piccadilly, Buckingham Palace and surrounds. Facilities were excellent and staff very hospitable. Highly recommended to members passing through London. Rates were very reasonable for such a prestigious address, $170 GBP on weekdays and $100 GBP on weekends (plus VAT). Full English breakfast for $6 GBPs.
