United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Circular Series W December 2009 AP 12-09 World Agricultural Production Argentine Corn Benefits from Localized Rains While Planting Progresses Rain during the first week of December benefited corn growth and hastened planting of the crop between showers. The USDA forecasts Argentine corn production for 2009/10 at 14.0 million tons, unchanged from last month but up 1.4 million from last year when drought limited corn harvest and production. Area is estimated at 1.9 million hectares, below last year’s harvested area of 2.25 million and about 30 percent lower than both the 5-year and 10-year averages. Corn planting has proceeded through localized rain events and is now about 75 percent completed. With diverse pla dates throughout the country, the current crop stage varies from recently-planted to tasseling. The bulk of the crop is about knee-high and in good condition in most of the core planted nting areas. Heavy rains in southern Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay have filled the Parana River and caused flooding in northern Argentina (as indicated on MODIS imagery), threatening agricultural land and forcing some places to evacuate cattle to drier pastures. Argentine Corn Benefits from Localized Rains While Planting Progresses Rain during the first week of December benefited corn growth and hastened planting of the crop between showers. The USDA forecasts Argentine corn production for 2009/10 at 14.0 million tons, unchanged from last month but up 1.4 million from last year when drought limited corn harvest and production. India: Lower Cotton Production for 2009/10 India's 2009/10 cotton production is forecast at 23.8 million 480-pound bales, down 2 percent from last month but up 1.2 million or 5 percent from last year. Area is forecast at 10.26 million hectares, up 3 percent from last month and up 9 percent from last year. The yield is forecast at 505 kilograms per hectare, down 4 percent from last month and down 3 percent from last year. The current yield is slightly less than the five-year average. Despite the overall inadequate and uneven distribution of this season’s monsoon rainfall, record planted area is expected because growing areas in the Central Zone experienced less rainfall deficiencies compared to other parts of the country. Encouraged by relatively favorable rainfall, high domestic prices, and anticipated export demand, cotton growers in the States of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are reported to have significantly increased planted area compared to last year. Significant yield decline is expected due to delayed planting, uneven seasonal rainfall distribution, and expansion of dryland cotton. In addition, excessive rainfall due to the tropical cyclone in mid-October is estimated to have caused limited crop damage and delayed early harvest in some regions. As of November, the majority of the crop was in advanced maturity stages and rated in mostly fair to good condition. Harvesting operations are progressing well. Cotton deliveries to ginning facilities are picking up in several states, including Punjab, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. (For more information, contact Dath Mita at 202-720-7339, [email protected].) India: Rapeseed Production for 2009/10 Forecast to Decrease

India's 2009/10 rapeseed production is forecast at 6.6 million tons, down 0.5 million or 7 percent from last month and down 0.4 million or 6 percent from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 6.5 million hectares, down 0.5 million or 7 percent from last month and down 0.1 million or 2 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 1.02 tones per hectare, down 4 percent from last year. Rapeseed planting is nearly complete in key growing states of Rajasthan, Utter Pradesh, and Haryana. Early-sown varieties usually are planted in September and October and late-maturing varieties are sown through mid-November. The latest official data indicate that rapeseed plantings stand at approximately 6.0 million hectares, up slightly from the same time last year. However, lower planted area is reported in Rajasthan, the state responsible for 42 percent of total rapeseed production in India. Earlier expectations of higher rapeseed production are declining, in part, due to drier-than-normal conditions at the onset of planting and acreage competition with wheat. Wheat continues to sustain relatively high government minimum support prices (MSP). (For more information, contact Dath Mita at 202-720-7339, [email protected].)

Record Yields Boost China’s 2009/10 Rice Production China’s rice production for 2009/10 is estimated at 137.0 million tons (195.7 million, rough basis), up 1.0 million or 1 percent from last month and up 2 percent from last year’s bumper crop. The estimated area of 29.68 million hectares is up 0.44 million from last year’s revised

estimate of 29.24 million, and is the highest planted area since 2000/01. Planted area increased this year in response to higher government support prices and subsidies for improved seeds and inputs. The rice yield for 2009/10 is estimated at a record 6.59 tons per hectare, up slightly from last year. Rice yields benefitted from generally favorable weather this season in most crop areas. Damage from typhoons and flooding was relatively minor this year in central and southern rice growing regions, and a serious summer drought had little impact on the single rice yields in the Northeast due to effective irrigation. (For more information, contact Paulette Sandene at 202-690-0133, [email protected].)

Ukraine: Corn Harvest Data Indicate Record Yield The USDA estimates Ukraine corn production for 2009/10 at 10.5 million tons, up 0.5 million or 5 percent from last month but down 0.9 million or 8 percent from last year. Area is estimated at 2.1 million hectares, down 0.3 million from last year. With harvest more than 90 percent complete, reported yield stands at 5.00 tons per hectare, up 5 percent from last year’s record. Final output is unlikely to match last year’s record 11.4 million tons due to a 13-percent reduction in area, but the estimated harvest will be the second-highest in Ukraine’s history. Corn yields have increased by roughly 60 percent over the past ten years, due in large part to a substantial increase in the use of hybrid seed. This report uses information from the Foreign Agricultural Service’s (FAS) global network of agricultural attachés and counselors, official statistics of foreign governments and other foreign source materials, and the analysis of economic data and satellite imagery. Estimates of foreign area, yield, and production are from the International Production Assessment Division, FAS, and are reviewed by USDA’s Inter-Agency Commodity Estimates Committee. Estimates of U.S. area, yield, and production are from USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Numbers within the report may not add to totals because of rounding. This report reflects official USDA estimates released in the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE-468) December 10, 2009. Printed copies are available from the National Technical Information Service. Download an order form at http://www.ntis.gov/products/specialty/usda/fas_a-g.asp, or call NTIS at 1-800-363-2068.
