is the forceful control by a country over another country’s markets and lands. They are territories but not colonies.

Acquisition of Hawaii = The U.S. was very interested in Hawaii as an economic commercial port and a strategic defense location in the pacific.

When Queen Liliuokalani wanted proposed a new constitution to restore Hawaii to a monarchy, the U.S. Overthrew the queen and introduced a bill in which resulted in the US getting Hawaii.

Otherwise, Hawaii may have gone to France or England becoming part of a European Power.

Sanford B. Dole =

An American politician who was part of a group of businessmen who forced a new Hawaii constitution(The Bayonet Constitution) and removed Queen Liliuokalani from power by threatening her people with the U.S. Navy.

He refused President Grover Cleveland’s order to make Liliuokalani the Queen again. After Grover was defeated in a reelection campaign. The new president, McKinley signed the Newsland Resolution making Hawaii a territory of the United States.

Dole then served as a governor of Hawaii

The Open Door Policy is a concept in foreign affairs stating that, in principle, all nations should have equal trade rights in China. Began with British commercial practice, during the Qing Dynasty in China after the First Opium War (1839-1842).

Boxer Rebellion = Group of Chinese men that are called the righteous “fists” of harmony.

The protest against British and American merchants in China due to them having a bigger footprint (sphere of influence) in Chinese markets than they did.

This leads to a revolt known as the Boxer Rebellion.

Chinese Exclusion act of 1882

Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 =

passed by Congress and signed by President Chester A. Arthur. This act provided an absolute 10-year halt on Chinese labor immigration.

It also refused State and Federal courts the right to grant citizenship to Chinese resident aliens so that they could also be deported.

Big Stick Diplomacy: was the slogan describing President Theodore Roosevelt's corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.

U.S. had the right not only to oppose European intervention in the Western Hemisphere, but also to intervene in the domestic affairs of its neighbors if they proved unable to maintain order and national sovereignty on their own.

He used the Great White fleet to show U.S. Naval Superiority around the world.

Alfred Thayer Mahan =

has been called "the most important American strategist of the nineteenth century.”

His concept of "sea power" was based on the idea that countries with greater naval power will have greater worldwide impact.

His concepts had an enormous influence in shaping the strategic thought of navies across the world, especially in the United States, Germany, Japan and Britain

Under Roosevelt, the U.S. adopted the role of policeman for the Western hemisphere.

He also supported the construction of the Panama Canal, allowing the U.S. to expand trade and move navies from the Atlantic to Pacific.

He said that this was necessary to ensure the stability of Latin America.

Dollar Diplomacy =

is the term used to describe the efforts of the Taft administration when it used trade agreements and American investments as a weapon to achieve foreign policy goals.

Used primarily in Latin America and East Asia.

Spanish American War 1898 = American interests in Cuba combined with “Yellow Journalism” sensationalizing events in Cuba and the sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine led to a declaration of war against Spain in 1898.

The war resulted in America’s emergence as a world power with colonies of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. (Cease Fire

• Henry Cabot Lodge =

A Massachusetts Senator who supported American Expansion as a world power. He worked for the Panama Canal and naval bases to support world trade.

• It provided for a quicker water route between the industrial centers of the Eastern U.S. and markets on the West Coast and in Asia. This caused a movement to build the Panama Canal which was completed in 1914.

The Panama Canal: made travel faster and shorter from Atlantic to Pacific Ocean and increased possibility of trade and movement. Built on the isthmus of Panama because it was the most narrowest piece of land across the Americas. It was completed in 1914

Building the Panama Canal created a U.S. presence in Panama until 1999. and its initial work led to engineering discoveries and medical solutions to problems of malaria and yellow fever.

used big stick diplomacy, dollar diplomacy, and the Great White fleet to increase United States influence around the world.

Taking these policies as a whole, Roosevelt turned America into a world power and a major player in global affairs.

World Power:

is what a country becomes when it shows off its power either militarily, economically or controlling natural resources and is considered a very influential player in world politics.
