Noncitrus Fruits Highlights

In 2017, the Nation’s utilized production for the 25 estimated noncitrus fruit crops totaled 18.5 million tons, down

1 percent from 2016. Fresh utilized production totaled 8.11 million tons, up 1 percent from the previous year. Processed

utilized production totaled 10.3 million tons, down 3 percent from 2016. In terms of utilized production, the three largest

crops were grapes, apples, and strawberries, which combined for 79 percent of the noncitrus fruits total. Bearing acreage

totaled 2.03 million, down 2 percent from the previous season. The major deciduous crops accounted for 1.68 million or

83 percent of the total bearing acreage.

The value of utilized production for 2017 noncitrus fruit crops totaled $18.6 billion, up 4 percent from the previous year.

Grapes, apples, and strawberries claimed the highest values, accounting for 73 percent of the total value of utilized

production when combined.

of utilized production for 2017 tree nut crops totaled $9.02 billion, up 4 percent from the previous year. Bearing acreage

Noncitrus Fruits Comments

Apple: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 11.1 billion pounds, up 1 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was estimated at

323,000, down slightly from the previous year. The average yield was 35,300 pounds per acre, up 200 pounds from the

previous year. Of the total utilized production, 7.71 billion pounds were for the fresh market and 3.35 billion pounds were

for processing. The value of the crop totaled $3.55 billion, up 3 percent from the previous season, with an average annual

price of 32.1 cents per pound.

Washington growers reported that warm days and cool nights helped contribute to a large crop. Availability of labor for

harvest was a concern for producers. Shippers reported that they were behind pace from last year. Michigan growers

reported a late freeze resulted in a smaller crop size. New York growers reported favorable weather conditions prevailed

from spring bloom through harvest.

Apricot: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 45,500 tons, down 29 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was estimated at

10,000, up 3 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 4.57 tons per acre, down 2.03 tons from the previous

year. Of the total utilized production, 22,300 tons were for the fresh market and 23,200 tons were for processing. The

value of the crop totaled $44.6 million, down 22 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of

$979 per ton.

In California, the crop size was below the previous season due to rains during bloom as well as frost and hail damage later

in the season. Fresh market apricots were harvested in May and ran later than normal, while apricots for processing were

harvested in early June.

Avocado: Utilized production in 2017-2018 totaled 145,170 tons, up 6 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was estimated

at 56,580, down 1 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 2.59 tons per acre, up 0.19 ton from the previous

year. Of the total utilized production, 143,960 tons were for the fresh market and 1,210 tons were for processing. The

value of the 2017-2018 crop totaled $392 million, up 6 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of

$2,700 per ton.

In California, the largest producing State, growers reported a lack of rainfall which resulted in high water costs. Growers

who chose to irrigate less realized lower than average yields, while quality was also a concern.

Banana: Utilized production in Hawaii for 2017 totaled 6.61 million pounds, up 19 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage

was estimated at 600, down 14 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 11,100 pounds per acre,

up 3,100 pounds from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $6.03 million, up 8 percent from the previous

season, with an average annual price of 91.2 cents per pound.

In Hawaii, the 2017 crop showed some improvement from the previous year. Growers reported good growing conditions

throughout the season. The State received good rainfall, which resulted in increased production from the previous season.

Blackberry: Utilized production in Oregon for 2017 totaled 40.2 million pounds, down 31 percent from the previous

year. Area harvested was estimated at 6,300 acres, down 10 percent from the previous year. The average yield was

6,380 pounds per acre, down 1,910 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 3.05 million pounds

were for the fresh market and 37.2 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $31.1 million,

up 18 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of 77.4 cents per pound.

Growers reported conditions for the growing season were variable. They ranged from mostly wet, followed by a cold

spell, to hot temperatures. Overall reported conditions were poor for the crop.

Blueberry, Cultivated: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 516 million pounds, down 12 percent from 2016.

Area harvested was estimated at 84,600 acres, down 9 percent from the previous year. The average yield was

6,100 pounds per acre, down 240 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 307 million pounds

were for the fresh market and 209 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $822 million,

up 14 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $1.59 per pound.


Michigan blueberry growers reported a hard freeze in early May, which caused several producers to lose their entire crop.

The freeze coupled with the ongoing battle with Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) infestations, mummy berry disease, and

gall wasp infestations decreased the quality of the berries harvested in 2017. Some processors commented that they paid

lower prices for berries because of quality issues. Georgia had a mild winter followed by a late spring freeze which was

detrimental to the 2017 crop. The mild winter temperatures allowed for an early bloom period and a spring freeze at the

height of bloom which caused tremendous crop losses. Many growers suffered a total loss. North Carolina growers also

experienced a March freeze which caused significant damage and losses to the crop. Lower production led to an increase

in demand for blueberries, thus resulting in a significant increase in fresh market prices. Washington growers reported

poor yields due to excessive precipitation early in the season.

Blueberry, Wild: Utilized production in Maine for 2017 totaled 67.7 million pounds, down 33 percent from the previous

year. Area harvested was estimated at 17,000 acres, down 26 percent from the previous year. The average yield was

3,980 pounds per acre, down 420 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 350,000 pounds were

for the fresh market and 67.3 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $17.6 million,

down 37 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of 26.0 cents per pound.

Low processing prices caused many producers to not harvest wild blueberries in 2017.

Boysenberry: Utilized production in Oregon for 2017 totaled 1.64 million pounds, down 24 percent from the previous

year. Area harvested was estimated at 270 acres, down 21 percent from the previous year. The average yield was

6,070 pounds per acre, down 250 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 20,000 pounds were for

the fresh market and 1.62 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $1.39 million, up 4 percent

from the previous season, with an average annual price of 84.9 cents per pound.

Boysenberry yields were lower than the previous year as a result of frequent and heavy precipitation early in the year

followed by a hot and dry summer.

Cherry, Sweet: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 433,020 tons, up 26 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was

estimated at 92,300, up 1 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 4.74 tons per acre, up 0.92 ton from the

previous year. Of the total utilized production, 348,920 tons were for the fresh market and 84,100 tons were for

processing. The value of the crop totaled $892 million, up 15 percent from the previous season, with an average annual

price of $2,060 per ton.

The California season began later than in recent years and ended in mid-June, nearly two weeks later than the 2015 and

2016 seasons. In Michigan, a May 8 freeze event resulted in damage to the crop, especially in the West Central region

with some growers reporting a total loss. Growers also expressed concerns about bird feeding, SWD damage, and cracked

fruit as a result of heavy rains during fruit development.

Cherry, Tart: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 254 million pounds, down 20 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was

estimated at 36,000, down 4 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 7,210 pounds per acre,

down 1,590 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 800,000 pounds were for the fresh market and

253 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $56.9 million, down 35 percent from the previous


In Michigan, the largest producing State, a freeze event on May 8 caused damage to some tart cherries. Harvest began in

early July as fruit began to mature quickly. Harvest was complete in late July in the southern counties, but continued into

mid-August for growers in the northwest part of the State. Rain events and higher temperatures in early August softened

late-harvest fruit, reduced Brix levels, and raised concerns about insects and disease. In Wisconsin, Spotted Drosophila, an

invasive fly, along with hail damage led to a higher than normal percent of cherries that were harvested but not sold. Cool

temperatures and excessive rainfall brought production totals down from last year. In New York, harvest began in July

and was completed in August.


Coffee: Utilized production in Hawaii for 2017-2018 totaled 24.6 million pounds (cherry basis), down 14 percent from

the previous year. Bearing acreage was estimated at 7,200, up 3 percent from the previous year. The average yield was

3,530 pounds per acre, down 650 pounds from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $43.8 million,

down 10 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $1.78 per pound.

The crop received plentiful rain resulting in a larger harvest, however coffee in the Kona region became ripe within a

couple of weeks rather than a couple of months as usual. Therefore, harvest was hampered by lack of available labor,

resulting in a larger harvested but not sold total.

Cranberry: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 8.32 million barrels, down 13 percent from 2016. Area harvested was

estimated at 39,700 acres, down 4 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 209.6 barrels per acre,

down 20.4 barrels from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 332,700 barrels were for the fresh market and

5.21 million barrels were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $251 million, down 14 percent from the previous

season, with an average annual price of $30.20 per barrel.

Wisconsin experienced a wet and cool growing season which led to lower production and some rot. Many growers

reported smaller than normal berries due to the weather. In Massachusetts, the season began with warmer temperatures

and a lighter frost season. Harvest was delayed due to harsh weather conditions and growers struggling to meet color

requirements. A low water table also challenged growers during harvest. Production was negatively impacted as growers

reported small berry sizes and a portion of the crop was lost due to fruit rot while waiting for crop development.

Date: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 43,050 tons, up 16 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was estimated at 13,400,

up 9 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 3.23 tons per acre, up 0.19 ton from the previous year. Of the

total utilized production, 14,940 tons were for the fresh market and 28,110 tons were for processing. The value of the crop

totaled $151 million, up significantly from the previous season, with an average annual price of $3,510 per ton.

In California, the largest producing State, growers reported an average crop, however quality was reported to be very

good. Growers thinned their crop for jumbo-type fruit. A tropical storm hit the date growing region during the middle of

September which resulted in some concern for growers, but minimal damage was reported. Demand was reported to be

very strong.

Bearing acreage was estimated at 6,400, down 2 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 4.88 tons per acre,

down 0.15 ton from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 3,900 tons were for the fresh market and

27,300 tons were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $28.6 million, down 4 percent from the previous season,

with an average annual price of $916 per ton.

The California season started in May and continued through mid-January. A rainy winter followed by a cool spring

provided good early season growing conditions. Hot temperatures were experienced later in the summer but producers

were able to manage the crop so no major issues were reported due to the weather conditions.

Grape: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 7.36 million tons, down 4 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was estimated

at 1.00 million, down 1 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 7.36 tons per acre, down 480 pounds from

the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 1.03 million tons were for the fresh market and 6.33 million tons were

for processing. The value of the crop totaled $6.46 billion, up 3 percent from the previous season, with an average annual

price of $877 per ton.

Growers in California reported ample rainfall during the winter months which eased growers’ concerns for lack of water.

Excessively hot summer temperatures slowed ripening. The labor shortage was a major concern for California grape

growers. In Washington, cold temperatures during the winter months caused damage to vines in some areas. Cool, damp

weather conditions delayed maturity and extended harvest.

Kiwifruit: Utilized production in California for 2017 totaled 33,200 tons, up 17 percent from the previous year.

Bearing acreage was estimated at 4,400, up 19 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 7.64 tons per acre,


down 0.01 ton from the previous year. All of the total utilized production was for the fresh market. The value of the crop

totaled $34.9 million, down 22 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $1,050 per ton.

The California crop received a late summer heat wave which negatively impacted kiwi development and sizing although

good quality was reported.

Nectarine: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 156,800 tons, down 7 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was estimated

at 19,200, down 5 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 8.22 tons per acre, down 0.09 ton from the

previous year. Of the total utilized production, 151,200 tons were for the fresh market and 5,600 tons were for processing.

The value of the crop totaled $143 million, down 4 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of

$912 per ton.

In California, the largest producing State, plentiful rain in 2017 was mostly welcomed, but some orchards were hit with

storms mid-bloom, resulting in more bloom-drop than usual. Fruit sizing was up compared with 2016, and harvest started

about a week later than usual. Growers reported supplies were steady throughout the summer.

Olive: Utilized production in California for 2017 totaled 191,700 tons, up 16 percent from the previous year.

Bearing acreage was estimated at 36,000, down 3 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 5.34 tons per

acre, up 0.88 ton from the previous year. All of the total utilized production was for processing. The value of the crop

totaled $187 million, up 32 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $974 per ton.

California growers experienced better than average yields in 2017, with good quality. Demand for oil was reported to be

very high. Labor shortages continued to impact some growers.

Papaya: Utilized production in Hawaii for 2017 totaled 22.3 million pounds, up 13 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage

was estimated at 1,700, up 31 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 15,100 pounds per acre,

down 100 pounds from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $9.40 million, down 3 percent from the previous


The Hawaii crop benefitted from good growing conditions throughout the season. There were no major problems reported

with the crop, and the State received enough rainfall to end drought conditions for the first time since 2015.

Peach: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 690,100 tons, down 11 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was estimated at

92,750, down 1 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 7.51 tons per acre, down 0.95 ton from the

previous year. Of the total utilized production, 310,480 tons were for the fresh market and 379,620 tons were for

processing. The value of the crop totaled $599 million, down 5 percent from the previous season, with an average annual

price of $868 per ton.

The California Freestone crop was reported to be in steady supply, however some growers reported labor for harvest was

a concern. Bearing acreage decreased from 2016 as utilized production dropped 2 percent from the previous season.

Clingstone crop full bloom occurred in early March, nearly two weeks later than the previous year. Chilling hours were

approximately 10 percent higher than the previous year. Harvest began during the beginning of June. Fruit sizing was

reported to be good. Despite a slight increase in bearing acres from the previous season, utilized production decreased

8 percent from 2016. In Georgia and South Carolina, the peach crop suffered extremely large losses resulting from low

chill hours, early bloom from warm winter temperatures, and a late spring freeze. These weather conditions left producers

with about 25 percent, or less, of a normal crop.

Pear: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 731,350 tons, down 1 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was estimated at

46,400, up slightly from the previous year. The average yield was 15.9 tons per acre, down 0.1 ton from the previous year.

Of the total utilized production, 486,150 tons were for the fresh market and 245,200 tons were for processing. The value

of the crop totaled $519 million, up 7 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $710 per ton.

In Washington, the largest producing State, extreme heat impacted the crop. Growers reported overall fruit sizes were

smaller for the year. In Oregon, weather conditions were similar to Washington; however, the State saw a slight increase


in Bartlett and Other Pear production. In California, beneficial rains and mild temperatures led to a good crop. Growers

reported overall fruit quality to be excellent, however some experienced problems with Fire Blight.

Plum: Utilized production in California for 2017 totaled 138,000 tons, up 3 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was

estimated at 18,000, down 4 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 7.83 tons per acre, up 0.58 ton from

the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $139 million, up 27 percent from the previous season, with an average

annual price of $1,010 per ton.

In California, harvest began the third week of May. There were a few reports of high winds that knocked blooms off trees,

but only in a few locations. There was very little precipitation and warm temperatures during the June harvest, so no

weather conditions to delay harvest or transportation to market. Some growers lined orchard floors with reflective plastic

to improve color prior to harvest. Record yields and availability of fruit were reported.

Prune: Utilized production in California for 2017 totaled 105,000 tons, up 94 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was

estimated at 45,000, unchanged from the previous year. The average yield was 2.33 tons per acre, up 1.13 tons from the

previous year. The value of the crop totaled $207 million, up 76 percent from the previous season, with an average annual

price of $1,970 per ton.

Very good weather conditions were reported for the growing season and breaks in rainy spring weather allowed for good

pollination. Growers reported that trees were healthy and had rebounded from the weather related challenges of recent

years.

Prune and Plum: Beginning in 2016, prunes and plums estimates were discontinued in Idaho, Michigan, Oregon, and

Washington.

Raspberry: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 233 million pounds, down 14 percent from 2016. Area harvested was

estimated at 20,440 acres, up slightly from the previous year. The average yield was 11,400 pounds per acre,

down 1,800 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 139 million pounds were for the fresh market

and 93.6 million pounds were for processing. The value of the crop totaled $517 million, up 27 percent from the previous

season, with an average annual price of $2.22 per pound.

California’s field conditions were wet in May followed by periods of hot and dry weather during the summer months.

Growers reported the crop experienced several periods of over 100 degree days, which resulted in lower yields and

production. Some growers scaled back acreage due to labor supplies and rising maintenance costs. Conditions in Oregon

and Washington were reported as being wet for too long, then turning cold, before warming up.

Strawberry: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 32.0 million cwt, up 1 percent from 2016. Area harvested was estimated

at 52,700 acres, down 1 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 607 cwt per acre, up 11.2 cwt from the

previous year. Of the total utilized production, 26.4 million cwt was for the fresh market and 5.55 million cwt for

processing. The value of the crop totaled $3.49 billion, down 1 percent from the previous season, with an average annual

price of $109 per cwt.

In California, the largest producing State, there was an increase in summer plantings for fall production despite rains early

in the season. An increase in higher producing varieties and generally better weather conditions for most of the season led

to increased production. In Florida, wet conditions early in the growing season led to some disease and insect issues. In

Oregon, some growers reported heat stress, as well as weed and pest pressure which negatively impacted the crop.

Tree Nuts Comments Almond: Utilized production in California for 2017 totaled 2.27 billion pounds, up 6 percent from the previous year.

Bearing acreage was estimated at 1.00 million acres, up 6 percent from the previous year. The average yield per acre was

2,270 pounds per acre, down 10 pounds from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $5.60 billion, up 11 percent

from the previous season, with an average annual price of $2.53 per pound.


The 2017 California bloom began in mid-February and was extended due to cold temperatures. Significant rains before

and during bloom made application of dormant and bloom sprays more difficult. While all the rain complicated orchard

work, the water was a welcome relief from years of drought. As nuts continued to develop, a heat wave in June caused

growers to irrigate day and night. Reports indicated that the hot weather did not cause much damage to the trees since

irrigation helped keep trees from getting stressed.

Hazelnut: Utilized production in Oregon for 2017 totaled 32,000 tons, down 27 percent from the previous year.

Bearing acreage was estimated at 37,000 acres, unchanged from the previous year. The average yield was

0.86 ton per acre, down 0.33 ton from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $73.6 million, down 38 percent

from the previous season, with an average annual price of $2,300 per ton.

Historically, hazelnut orchards exhibit alternate bearing patterns and 2017 was a “down” year for Oregon. Growth was

negatively impacted by cold, wet spring weather, which reduced flower retention and slowed the development of nuts.

Periods of high heat with little rain during summer caused moisture stress, which also contributed to decreased yields.

Macadamia: Utilized production in Hawaii for 2017 totaled 49.0 million pounds, up 17 percent from the previous year.

Bearing acreage was estimated at 16,000 acres, unchanged from the previous year. The average yield was

3,060 pounds per acre, up 430 pounds from the previous year. The value of the crop totaled $53.9 million, up 28 percent

from the previous season, with an average annual price of $1.10 per pound.

Hawaii growing conditions for macadamia nuts were variable by area for 2017. Higher yields offset losses due to spoilage

caused by the wet conditions.

Pecan: Utilized production in 2017 totaled 294 million pounds, up 9 percent from 2016. Bearing acreage was estimated

at 377,500, down 4 percent from the previous year. The average yield per acre was 778 pounds per acre, up 94 pounds

from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 263 million pounds were sold shelled and 30.7 million pounds

were sold in shell. The value of the crop totaled $684 million, down 2 percent from the previous season, with an average

annual price of $2.33 per pound.

In New Mexico, production was a record high. Pecan producers in Georgia reported an average year and negative impacts

from Hurricane Irma.

Pistachio: Utilized production in California for 2017 totaled 600 million pounds, down 33 percent from the previous

year. Bearing acreage was estimated at 250,000, up 5 percent from the previous year. The average yield was

2,400 pounds per acre, down 1,350 pounds from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 461 million pounds

were sold in shell. The value of the crop totaled $1.01 billion, down 33 percent from the previous season, with an average

annual price of $1.69 per pound.

California growers reported rainfall led to plenty of available water but wet conditions affected winter field preparations.

Warm summer temperatures were positive for growth but led to some insect pressure. Pistachios are an alternate bearing

crop, and despite the “off” year, 2017 was the second largest crop on record for California pistachios.

Walnut: Utilized production in California for 2017 totaled 630,000 tons, down 9 percent from the previous year.

Bearing acreage was estimated at 335,000, up 6 percent from the previous year. The average yield was 1.88 tons per acre,

down 0.31 ton from the previous year. Of the total utilized production, 441,000 tons were sold shelled. The value of the

crop totaled $1.59 billion, up 25 percent from the previous season, with an average annual price of $2,530 per ton.

The California season began with adequate chilling hours and record amounts of rainfall during the winter and spring

months. There were reports of orchards being saturated for several weeks, which resulted in a compromised root system.

A higher than average insect problem was also reported. During the excessive heat waves over the summer, growers

applied sunburn preventative materials.


Definition of Terms

Bearing acreage: An orchard, grove, or vineyard is considered to be of bearing age when it can normally be expected to

produce a commercially significant quantity of the crop. Bearing age is a function of many factors including variety,

rootstock, year planted, etc.

Apple crop: Apple production estimates are published only for commercial orchards, according to the laws governing

crop production reports (7 U.S.C 590a). Commercial orchards, under these laws, are defined as orchards of 100 or more

bearing trees.

Harvested not sold: Fruit of marketable quality that was picked but not sold for various reasons are included in total

production.

Total production: The quantity of utilized production plus quantities harvested but not sold.

Utilization: These estimates refer to the first utilization, not necessarily the final utilization of a crop. For example, frozen

fruit includes some fruit that may be later used for making preserves. Grade-outs for fresh market fruit which are

processed are included in the processing quantity. Fruit graded-out from canning or freezing and utilized for juice is

included with juice.

Utilized production: The amount of a crop sold plus the quantities used at home or held in storage represents utilized

production.

Yield per acre: Unless otherwise stated, yield per acre is based on total production.

Price and Value Definitions

Price: Prices in this report represent the Market Year Average (MYA) price. For a crop sold for both fresh market and

processing, the total crop MYA is a weighted average of the fresh and processing prices.

Prices for fresh fruit represent the average price producers receive at the point of first sale. This is commonly referred to

as the average price as sold. The exception is fresh fruit sales in California, Michigan (apples only), New York (apples

only), and Washington which are equivalent returns at packinghouse door.

Prices for fruit sold for processing are equivalent returns for fruit delivered to the processing plant door except for

cranberries, California olives, and freestone peaches, which are priced at the first delivery point.

Value: Crop value estimates in this report cover the marketing season or crop year and should not be confused with cash

receipts which are based on a calendar year.

Statistical Methodology

Survey Procedures: Probability based grower disposition surveys are used to collect acreage, yield, production, and price

data. These fruit inquiries are generally mailed surveys at the end of the growing season. Telephone follow-up of mail

survey non-response is used to ensure adequate coverage. They provide indications of the quantity used on farms, the

quantity sold directly to consumers, and production not sold or utilized. All fruit and nut processors or shellers are also

surveyed annually to determine quantity handled, utilization, and the origin of the commodity.

Estimating Procedures: Information obtained from the non-citrus fruits and nuts grower surveys along with federal

administrative data is used to establish estimates of bearing acres, yield, total production, utilized production, price, and

value. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates.

Revision Policy: Final survey indications and check data for most non-citrus fruits and nuts are available prior to

submitting utilization estimates. End-of-season estimates of production are made following harvest and are subject to

revision the following year based on a thorough review of all available data.

Reliability: Survey indications are subject to sampling variability because all operations growing non-citrus fruits and/or

nuts are not included in the sample. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omission, duplication,

imputation for missing data, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. These errors cannot be

measured directly, but are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of

all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
