States has high mountains in the West and a huge central plain.
The lowest point in the country is in Death Valley which is at -86 meters and the highest peak is Mt. McKinley at 6,198 meters.
General information
The United Staes of America (the USA) has a population of about 300 million. It is a very big country. It is almost 4,000 km from New York to Los Angeles. The country is so big that parts of the USA are in different time zones. When it is 9 a.m. in New York, it is only 6 a.m. in Los Angeles.
America is a country of many cultures. The first people to live there were the Native American Indians. They lived in groups or tribes and each tribe had its own traditions.
Europeans started to live in America in the 16th century, and in the 17th century there were number of colonies. At first they were helped by the Native Americans.

Citizens over the age of 18 years old vote to elect the President and Vice President of United States every four years. The president lives in the White House in the capital city of Washington, D.C. There are two houses of Congress: the Senate and the House of Representatives.
For the first time in the nation's history an African American, Barack Obama was elected President of the United States in 2008.
