The US began as13 small trading colonies within the British Empire and has grown to 50 states. This map will help you better understand the way in which America expanded throughout the 1800s.

1) On the map, label the 48 continuous states. It is OK to use abbreviations. Also label Canada, Mexico and Cuba.

2) The map on the reverse side has been divided into eight regions (dark, bold lines) representing major stages in US expansion. Write the name of each region in the blank box on the front.
