During the fifty years between 1810 and 1860, the United States grew tremendously. There were many causes for the growth of the nation including war, purchases, annexations, negotiations, and forceful move outs. The concept of Manifest Destiny was instrumental in much of the expansion.

Manifest Destiny • A policy of imperialistic expansion defended as necessary or benevolent.

• The 19th-century doctrine that the United States had the right and duty to expand throughout the North American continent.
