United Way of
Eastern New Mexico
2011 Annual Report
Bringing the hearts and hands of Curry and Roosevelt counties together to build a stronger community
Dear Friends,
I want to express my deep appreciation for your generosity, this year and every year.
YOUR generosity makes so much important work possible. Take a moment to think about all that YOU
do for your neighbors.
You and United Way partners are~
Linking 15 local churches and non-profits in an assistance network that will reduce duplication and
help more families find the help they need.
Helping 1,500 families connect to resources while offering hope and guidance through 2-1-1.
Responding to community crisis and disaster in a coordinated way to ensure recovery for local
families.
Ensuring homebound individuals with nutrition and neighborly contact through diet specific
delivered meals and boxed food programs.
Providing victims of violence and abuse with advocacy, support, and security.
Creating unique opportunities for youth to learn leadership skills, discover their strengths, and
interact with adults, role models and mentors.
Helping over 400 children per week arrive at school ready to learn because now they are not
hungry.
Without your dedication and support, none of these actions would be possible. For that, I am pro-
foundly grateful.
Thank you for carrying on this valuable work through United Way activities, programs and grants.
In admiration and gratitude,
Louis Gordon Louis Gordon~City of Clovis
President UWENM Board of Directors
Mission United Way of Eastern New Mexico is to Unite Neighbors and Change Lives in Curry and Roosevelt Counties, through programs that address Education, Income (financial stability) and Health.
Vision
United Way of Eastern New Mexico envisions a community that comes together to encourage families that are work-ing to become financially stable; reach out to and support young people at every educational stage; and encourage individuals to make healthy decisions while we reduce the barriers to healthy living.
Goals United Way of Eastern New Mexico strives to improve lives in our communities by mobilizing our citizens and local companies to Give, Advocate, and Volunteer.
Mission, Vision & Goals
Income Education Health UWENM ~ Locally Organized and Locally Led In 1960, the Curry County United Fund was organized to consolidate the fundraising efforts of local human service agencies. The Fund was established on the belief that a concentrated effort to reach out to the community annually would ultimately produce better results than each agency repeatedly asking local individuals for funding throughout the year. In 1973, the Community Fund became Curry County United Way.
In 2005, the Roosevelt County United Way and the Curry County United Way officially merged to form a combined dual-county United Way. The new dual-county United Way was named United Way of Eastern New Mexico (UWENM) in March of 2005. Over our history, United Way of Eastern New Mexico has invested over $11,000,000 into the community, providing vital services to our neighbors-in-need in both counties.
UWENM is focused on changing the conditions that exist in our community which impact education, income and health. One powerful tool for community for change is the Day of Caring. Since 2006, UWENM has held a Day of Caring to mobilize volunteers in improving our community. From cleaning up parks, to building a playground, to preparing the lot of a Habitat for Humanity house, Day of Caring projects bring many different people and
organizations together to Transform Neighborhoods.
In 2007, 2-1-1 was introduced to Curry and Roosevelt counties after the F5 tornado hit Clovis earlier that year. 2-1-1 is a free information and referral service provided by United
Way. 2-1-1 is an easy to remember phone number that connects people to the help they need. Currently,
2-1-1 averages over 120 calls per month and the volume keeps growing as awareness of the program expands.
In 2009, a research based program—Zenith Youth Leadership Academy— was developed by Christina Martinez-Guajardo to encourage our young people to reach their potential by focusing on their strengths and developing diverse peer relationships.
In 2011, United Way partnered with MedBank New Mexico to provide long-term prescription assistance to residence in Curry and Roosevelt Counties. In it’s first year, it saved individuals in our community $17,400.
UWENM and United Way Worldwide
The United Way of Eastern New Mexico is one of 1,298 United Ways nationwide. It is a common misconception that United Ways across the country are local chapters of United Way Worldwide. Instead each is an independently incorporated charity ; entirely governed by local volunteers. The money raised in each of these communities is for local programs in that area. UWW is a trade association. UWW provides training and research to its members; however, they have no governing powers over local United Ways.
Under the umbrella of United Way Worldwide, UWENM gains exposure from national advertising and gains access to the many resources: training, information, national partnerships and trend analysis. UWENM is completely autonomous; all decisions regarding how the money is raised and how the money is spent are local decisions. Operating as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization under the rules of the New Mexico State Corporate Commission, complete fiscal control and responsibility lie in the hands of the Board of Directors.
Board Members
Board Members are community leaders who believe that the United Way plays a vital role in community strength and who want to ensure quality human services are available to all people in Curry County and Roosevelt County, New Mexico. New members are recruited by current board members with the hope that it reflects the community at large.
Staff
Currently, United Way of Eastern New Mexico employs three full-time employees, Erinn Burch, Executive Director since 2002, Sara Newell, Assistant Director and Patricia Bazar, 2-1-1 Coordinator and Office Administrator, and two volunteer staff members and an intern. Our dedicated staff allows UWENM to engage donors and volunteers year round to make a bigger impact in our communities. In addition our staff provides real service to the community through 2-1-1, Day of Caring, and work on issues facing our families.
Special Olympics Party
United Way staff sincerely thanks all of our great partners
and volunteers for your dedication, hard work and
collaboration.

UWENM Board and Staff value the opportunity to work with them in 2010 and 2011. This is by no means a complete list of passionate people making a difference in Roosevelt and Curry Counties. It is a short
