The UNITY Newsletter serves as the office's electronic newsletter that is circulated to over 5,000 students, faculty and staff each month. The newsletter is designed to inform the University community about programs and activities for African, Hispanic, Asian and Native American students. In addition, the newsletter includes information on scholarships, internships and other resources that are beneficial to the University's diverse student community.

Hispanic Heritage Month 2011Mi Patria, Mi Herencia, Mi Orgullo

Mark your calendars for a month of exciting events celebrating Latino culture!

National Hispanic Heritage Week started in 1968 and in 1988 was expanded to 30 days, September 15-Octo-ber 15. The dates of Hispanic Heritage Month were selected to include the Independence Day celebrations of seven Latin American countries, as well as to incorporate Día de la Raza.

On October 4th at 4:30pm in Mahoney/Pearson Dining Hall the HHM committee will give you a little taste of our calendar of events at Dorm Storm. The month promises to highlight music, food, art, history and the rich-ness of the diverse Latino community. WALK TO PREVENT SUICIDE: 2011 OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALKSOctober 23, 9am

Lifeguards (UM’s Suicide Prevention Outreach Program) will be participating in a 5k walk on Sunday October 23, 2011 to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention. Join us and bring a friend! The walk will take place on UM’s Gables Campus and registration for the walk starts at 9am. You will also receive a team shirt for your participation. We hope to see you there! Basic Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) with final simulationRape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) is a 12-hour, in-depth, internationally recognized program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The comprehensive course begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance before progressing into detailed hands-on defense training which includes a final simulation exercise. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program, but rather a physical defense program designed spe-cifically for women to utilize in the most common types of physical attack situations.

When:- Saturday, October 8th, 2011 from 9am-12noon (Session 2 of 4)- Saturday, October 15th, 2011 from 9am-12noon (Session 3 of 4)- Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 from 9am-12noon (Session 4 of 4)This is a FOUR session program where content builds upon itself. Studio Cycling and Yoga Passes Pro-Rated (10/3)

If you missed the opportunity to purchase a yoga or studio cycling pass at the beginning of the semester, you can still take advantage of these two great fitness programs at the Herbert Wellness Center. Yoga and Studio Cy-cling passes for the fall semester are now pro-rated to only $45 for student members and $72 for non-student members. A semester pass gives the member unlimited access to all the classes on the schedule. Pilates Session II Registration (10/3 – 10/7)

Registration is now open for the fall semester’s second session of Pilates instruction. Pilates is one of the many community classes offered at the Herbert Wellness Center therefore you do not have to be a wellness member to sign up. Meditation Class (Class is 10/ 3)

Namaste students! Are classes, social life, and work stressing you out? Take a break and meditate! You will develop mental clarity and discipline that will help you focus and improve concentra-tion (great skills when it comes to studying!) Lunthita Duthely, a follower of the teachings of Sri Chinmoy, will guide and instruct participants through the medita-tion. The meditation is Monday, October 3, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Instruction is free and open to everybody. Please RSVP to let us know you are coming by calling 305-284-LIFE (5433).

Soccer Leagues (Deadline to Register : 10/4)

GGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!! Kick your way into the school year with the intramural soccer league! The deadline to register is 10/4 and the team captains have until 8 a.m. on 10/6 to complete the Blackboard training session. A $40 refundable deposit is due at the time of registration. BLS for Health Care Providers

(Class is 10/4)The Basic Life Support for health-care providers covers core ma-terial such as adult and infant CPR (including two-rescuers scenario and use of the bag mask), foreign-body airway obstruction and automated external defibril-lation (AED). This course is for healthcare providers such as EMS personnel, physician assistants, doctors, dentists, nurses, and respi-ratory therapists who must have a card documenting successful completion of a CPR course. The class is Tuesday, October 4, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $45 for student members, $55 for non-student members and $65 for non-members. Officials Training (Soccer) (Training is 10/4-10/6)

Want to earn some extra cash but don’t have any experience and need flexible hours? Then become an official for the intramural Soc-cer League! Training will be held in the Herbert Wellness Center Classrooms October 4-6 at 6:30 p.m. (Note: you must attend the training session on October 4 or October 5 and the training session on October 6.) Baking Therapy Cooking Class

(Class is 10/11)Nothing like the smell of home-made bread to comfort the soul! Join Chef Mercedes as she dem-onstrates how to prepare cara-melized onion and goat cheese tart, Dutch-oven baked artisan bread, and rustic apple galette. The cost of the class, which includes cooking instruction, food tasting, and recipes, is $20 for UM stu-dents and Wellness Center mem-bers; $25 for non-members. Heart Saver CPR with AED (Class is 10/13)

Heart Saver CPR with AED teaches CPR and relief of chok-ing in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. Participants will also learn how to use an Au-tomated External Defibrillator (AED). The class is Thursday, Oc-tober 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $30 for student members, $35 for non-student members and $40 for non-mem-bers. Argentine Cuisine Cooking Class (Class is 10/26)

No need to travel to South America to enjoy the flavors of Argentina! Alliance of Latin American StudentsThe purpose of Alliance of Latin American Students (ALAS) is to unite both Latin American students as well as students interested in learning about Latin American cultures. The committee hosts forums, socials and educa-tional events throughout the semester that promote awareness of the rich and diverse Latin American commu-nity. Native American Programming Board (NAPB)Are you passionate about commemorating the Native American culture? Do you want to be part of bringing new and exciting events like this semester’s Finals Fiesta and celebrate the indigenous traditions, heritage, and customs of the different Native American tribes? If so, then be part of the Native American Programming Board sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) and help plan this year’s events. Native Ameri-can celebration is held during the month of November and with your help the month will be filled with enter-taining and engaging programs. Advocates for Youth - General InternshipAdvocates for Youth is the only national organization dedicated exclusively to the advancement of adolescent sexual and reproductive health. Advocates for Youth’s program and policy departments promote the health of adolescents worldwide with a focus on the prevention of unintended teenage pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV/AIDS, through access to health services and information. Interns receive $500 a month and work a minimum of 35 hours per week for three months. Unpaid internship positions are also available to students who receive academic credit for their work. Part-time internships can be accommodated; the monthly stipend will be adjusted accordingly. These are ongoing positions and applications are accepted year-round. The Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health PolicySupported by The Commonwealth Fund, administered by the Minority Faculty Development Program at Har-vard Medical School, this unique fellowship is designed to prepare physicians for leadership roles in formulating and promoting health policies and practices that improve the access to high-quality care at the national, state, and /or local levels for minority, disadvantaged, and most vulnerable populations. Up to five one-year, degree-granting fellowships will be awarded per year. Fellows will: 1) complete academic work leading to a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at the Harvard School of Public Health; and 2) be provided with core fellow-ship components such as seminars on leadership and health policy, practicum, leadership forums, conferences, site visits, mentoring, journal club, and shadowing. CFHUF also offers a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree at the Harvard Kennedy School to physicians already possessing an MPH. It is expected that CFHUF will support the development of a cadré of leaders in health policy and practice, well-trained academically and professionally in public health, health policy, health management, and clinical medicine, as well as actively commit-ted to careers in public service.

Physicians who are U.S. citizens and who have completed residency, either Board Eligible or Board Certified in the U.S are eligible for the fellowship. We are seeking physicians with evidence of leadership and leadership potential; experience or interest in addressing and improving the health needs of minority, disadvantaged and vulnerable populations; and intention to pursue a career in policy, public health practice, or academia.

The application deadline for the 2012-2013 Fellowship is January 3, 2012.

Greater Miami Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)OVERVIEW:The Greater Miami Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is Miami-Dade County’s largest orga-nization serving human resource professionals. Established in 1952, GMSHRM is comprised of the area’s most distinguished human resource professionals. GMSHRM is dedicated to supporting its members and promoting human resource communications by:

• Providing high quality, dynamic and responsive programs and services• Serving as the area’s voice on human resource management issues• Facilitating the development and guiding the direction of the profession

Committed to “Serving the Professional and Advancing the Profession” within the community, GMSHRM proudly sponsors the annual Greater Miami SHRM Student Scholarship Award. The scholarship is to encourage undergraduate and graduate students preparing for work in the field of Human Resource Management. There are two awards available. The winners will receive a $1,000.00 (made payable to the student). Judging is based on timely submission of all required documents and the written essay. The panel of judges is comprised of three GMSHRM members who will rank each essay and application materials. The judges’ scores are combined to determine the two highest average ranking application forms. The panel of judges reserves the right to reject any application that does not meet the requirements. All submissions must be made via email by October 31, 2011 at midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST). The winners will be notified by email and will be presented with the award at GMSHRM’s December meeting.
