UniversalDesignforLearning (UDL)isaneducationalframeworkthatisbasedonovertwentyyearsofresearchinthe learning sciencesthatguidesthedevelopmentofflexible learningenvironmentsbyaccommodatingforindividual learning differences.Itprovidesablueprintforcreatinginstructionalgoals,methods,materialsandassessmentsthatworkforallstudentsbyeliminatingbarriersfromthebeginningoftheinstructionalplanningprocess.
GOAL•ToincreaseEnglishLanguageArtsachievementofallseventh- gradestudentsbyincorporatingthethreeprinciplesofUniversalDesignforLearningacrossenvironments,materials,instructionandassessments.
ImplementationThree7th gradeEnglishLanguageArtseducators(general,special,andEnglishlanguagelearner)volunteeredtoparticipateinthepilot.
BaselineclassroomobservationdatawascollectedontheimplementationofUDLguidelines.Studentengagementdatawasalsocollectedduringeachobservation.Participantsattendedafull-dayworkshoponUDLonceperweekacross10weeks.Followingobservations,educatorscompletedaself-reflectiononthelessonobserved.Reflections,feedback,andstrategiesforimplementationwerediscussedatweeklycoachingsessions.ModelingofinstructionalstrategiesweredemonstratedbyACCESSinstructionalcoaches.
TeacherandstudentinterviewswereconductedandtheStudentEngagementInstrument(SEI)wasadministered(pre/post).Attheconclusionoftheproject,datawasanalyzedandsharedwithparticipants(seeresultsbelow).
