Individual and organizational Effectiveness

1. Effectiveness depends upon our ability to respond positively and creatively, to each and every situation & in the Higher/Right direction.

2. For positive responses and for reducing stress, we need a calm mind.

3. Effectiveness is a function of a ‘Calm Mind’ and a ‘Holistic Worldview’, which give rise to positive attitudes to work and life, which then results in appropriate action in each and every situation.

COMMON HOLISTIC VISION FOR ALL MANKIND

• Each soul is potentially divine• The goal is to manifest this divinity within by

controlling nature, external and internal• Do this either by work, or worship, or psychic

control, or knowledge – by one, or more, or all of these, and BE FREE

• This is the whole of religion. • Doctrines, or dogmas, or rituals, or books, or

temples, or forms, are but secondary details.

Every “Work” can take me Higher towards Perfection & joy or Lower towards Chaos &

misery• I have infinite potential, divinity within, which

is my real Self. Self is the source of all power, energy, life. My real Self is full of Bliss and therefore I can never be satisfied till I regain my blissful nature.

• My Self is enveloped by 5 coverings, which have to be refined by doing my duties & quality Work, to allow me manifest my full potential & regain my ever blissful nature

Page 33: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Summary: Unless I purify my mind through good Choices, Thoughts, Words, Actions I can’t express my full potential for perfection & Bliss

• BE rests on assumption that business ought to adhere to a socially responsible approach to decision making

• BE is a practical exercise of critical thinking where the goal is a corporate practice that does not foster unnecessary social harm

• BE is applied ethics; it involves taking pure theories, ideals, principles to Business arena

Page 40: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Integrity

No one should be entrusted to lead any org/business unless he has impeccable personal integrity. What’s more, top-

rung executives have to ensure that org. they lead are committed to a strict code of conduct – Louis Gerstner CEO,IBM

Integrity as single most value in a manager – Chairman Unilever

Page 41: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Role as Ethical Decision maker

Page 42: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Role as Decision maker

1. As managers our primary function is to CHOOSE between various alternatives.

2. We can solve ethical dilemmas better if we ‘see’ interconnectedness between Man, Organization, Nature and Society; Oneness

3. It is our responsibility to create not just an ethical environment but a work culture where people can give their best & work together for the good of society

Choice before us

• Two roads diverged in the woods and I, I took the road less traveled by; and that has made all the difference - Robert Frost

• Every moment two choices present themselves to us; the wise men choose the ‘Long-term Good’ and attain perfection; but the fools choose the ‘Short-term Pleasant’ and go round and round in darkness.

Page 44: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Joseph Badaracco,Prof. B.Ethics Harvard on Ethical Dilemmas

• We create our destiny at those ‘Defining Moments’ when we must choose between right & right

• We all experience situations where we are faced with conflicting choices, between two ideals: quantity versus quality; time Vs cost

• Decisions taken over many years forms the very basis of our character.

Page 45: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

45

Walking the Talk

• How to make managers trained in practical, extroverted art of managing, learn to engage in intuitive personal process of introspection

• Some searching questions can help change our values and beliefs into action

• In work place we have three types of choice• i)Personal: Who am I? ii) Org + personal:

Who are we? & iii) Who is Org? Social role

Page 46: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

46

Relationship between Man, Organization & Society (Samaja)• Man has Unlimited Potential; Purpose of his

Work & Life is to manifest his Full Potential in & through his Daily Work

• Purpose of Business: Companies exist in society for satisfying the needs (not wants!) of people in that society

• Profit is the compensation you get for your service to society: Prof.Ishikawa/Matsushita

We are in a state of perpetual purposelessness - Alvin Toffler

• We are creating & refining our maps every moment depending upon our motives, choices, thoughts, words and actions.

• To create a true map needs effort. More we make efforts & try to know truth, the better will our map become.

• Most people do not put in the effort; their map is narrow, misleading, false, limited

Page 48: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Law of Work &Managing Responses

Page 49: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi

Sunil Kumar, Coordinator, Self Development programmes

49

Law of cause & effect; action=reaction

• ACTIONS PRODUCE RESULTS

• RESULTS CAN BE EQUAL TO; MORE THAN; OR LESS THAN EXPECTATION

• RESULTS ARE GOVERNED BY MANY FACTORS BEYOND OUR CONTROL

• WE HAVE CLAIM ONLY ON CHOICES OF OUR ACTIONS, NOT ON RESULTS

Page 50: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi

Sunil Kumar, Coordinator, Self Development programmes

50

Calm mind is most effective

• I have ‘full’ control only on my actions

• When I am not the only controller of results it cannot be wisdom to link my happiness or grief on results; they are not all in our hand

• My effectiveness reduces if my mind gets disturbed due to my feelings of elation/grief

• Keeping my mind calm can give best results

Page 51: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi

Sunil Kumar, Coordinator, Self Development programmes

51

MANAGING RESPONSES I

• Self Awareness: Witness, watch thoughts, feelings & Emotions by standing apart

• Use Independent Will: power to act not just react, able to overcome ‘tendencies’ & give positive response; Can I keep promises, do right?

Page 52: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi

Sunil Kumar, Coordinator, Self Development programmes

52

MANAGING RESPONSES II

• Use Conscience; Viveka, our opening to wisdom, right Brain senses what’s right

• Use Creative Imagination: win-win; long-term good; Bahujan hitatye/sukhaye

• Long term good over immediate pleasure

• How many years ahead can I visualize

• Cajole Mind like mother, teacher, police

Page 53: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi

Sunil Kumar, Coordinator, Self Development programmes

53

Better control over events leads to more joy & effectiveness

• Effectiveness depends upon my ability to respond to each and every situation rightly

• Response-ability = Responsibility• For appropriate response we need Knowledge,

Positive Attitudes & Skill so that we can remain calm, peaceful: So, Purity of Mind

• Lack of control over mind, events, & bad use of time leads to dis-ease, distress

• We need ‘calm mind’ for quality work or joy

Page 54: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi

Sunil Kumar, Coordinator, Self Development programmes

54

Mind as our instrument for decisions

• MIND is our only internal instrument, it is restless, strong, obstinate, hard to control

• By practice/detachment can be controlled • Manas: Turned outwards; inputs data thru

senses, doubting, likes/hates, pain/joy• Chitta: Storehouse of all impressions:TWD• All decisions are based on stored up data• I can ‘change’ chitta only by counter TWD

Page 55: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

56

Leadership for Excellence

• Be Passionate about winning; Create high performing culture; Set demanding goals, measure results, hold people accountable

• Be Change agents, driving org to adapt, and advance faster than competitors

• Tackle problems personally not preside over work of others, be visible every day with customers, suppliers, business partners

Page 57: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi

Sunil Kumar, Coordinator, Self Development programmes

57

• Not only do right things but do it better, faster, oftener, more productively

• Praise, reward, cherish excellence

• Create world class process. People do what you inspect, not what you expect!

• No one should be entrusted leadership unless he has impeccable personal integrity

Page 58: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

58

Focus on execution‘½ x 2 x 3’; ‘24/7/365’

• Top have to ensure that the org/group they lead are committed to strict code of conduct

• Checks and balances; centralization Vs de-c • Tough, but fair, even-handed. Playing

favorites, excusing some hanging others for same offence, destroys morale & respect of colleagues.Bending rules making exception, just in this case - exception become rules

Sign in CEO’s office

• There are 4 kinds of people:-

1. Those who make things happen

2. Those to whom things happen

3. Those who watch things happen

4. Those who don’t even know things are happening

Page 60: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

60

Responsible persons take charge of themselves, their conduct

• To be responsible is a sign of maturity; to own up, be answerable, be accountable

• In order to be reasonable, responsibility must be limited to things within our power;

• To be effective it must relate to our operation of that power. Immature Adam passed the buck to Eve, who passed it to the serpent. ‘It made me do it’; we give excuses

Page 61: UNIVERSAL INSIGHTS for MANAGEMENT WORK ETHICS & HABITS of EFFECTIVE PERSONS Managing through Wisdom VIVEKMANAGEMENT

Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi

Sunil Kumar, Coordinator, Self Development programmes

61

How to cultivate responsibility? Only through repetitive actions

• Like most values, it is best developed and exercised in harmony with other values

• The more we practice and exercise, the more it becomes a habit; repetition > change

• Sow a thought, reap an action; actions > habit > character > destiny

• In self-development we become our disciple to control negatives: greed, anger, impulses

The fruit of self control

• Paul: The fruit of the spirit is kindness, joy, generosity, love, peace, patience, gentleness faithfulness, & self control; Galatian5.22/23

• It is our ego which stops us from enjoying the bliss of the divinity within, our real nature. Duty & Excellence purifies ego

• Animal man>human being>divine man
