Seminar for the university community

We invited advanced students and doctors to give a talk about they were working in. The speakers who participated were Dr. Jorge L. Flores, Dr. Guillermo García-Torales, Dr. J. María Yzuel and Dr. Erick Valdemar Cuevas. Students attended the lectures while they enjoyed some cookies.

Magnetic-optic materials, Dr. Jorge L. Flores Núñez February 19, 2009. Attendants: 13

This was first talk in our student chapter work-cycle. Dr. Flores exposed the work developed when he went to Uruguay, where he work on the development of current sensors with optic fiber and crystals (magnetic-optics material), whose optical properties were modified by the magnetic field that was consequence of the measured electric current. Dr. Flores got the students attention with some materials that were employed in his experiment as polarizers.

LCD characterization, Dr. J. María Yzuel March 3, 2009. Attendants: 113 Dr. Yzuel talked about the methods that are used in the University of Barcelona for the characterization of a LCD display by light polarization and interferometry techniques.

Tema 2, Dr. Guillermo García-Torales March 12, 2009. Attendants: 10 In the third conference Dr. Torales explained the interferometry field. He gave a summary about the history and mathematics related to the light interference phenomena. He brought a wide variety of distorted images that showed different pictures when they were superposed forming a fringe pattern. Intelligent Vision in Robots, Dr. Erick Valdemar Cuevas April 2, 2009. Attendants: 26

Artificial vision is considered an essential block for autonomous system operation, from simple recognition methods to complex robotic navigation assignments. All require a consistent representation of the environment they operate in.

This conference was about the principal perspectives and actual proposals of artificial vision applied to mobile robots, principally the ones considered computational intelligence.

Dr. Erick Valdemar Cuevas impressed the students with videos about the biped robots he has worked with, and also how robots could predict the movement of objects, such as people, and plan strategies in base on this movement.

The other planned conferences were cancelled due to A-H1N1 flu, but we plan to

invite them next year.

Participation in diffusion or research projects

Our partner Jorge Sánchez worked from June to December with our advisor, Dr. Jorge Luis Flores, in a research project called “Spatial integrating joint transform correlator for pattern recognition by use of an infinite grating filter”. In the proposed setup the joint transform of the images to be correlated is filtered by an infinite Ronchi ruling, which is generated by a spatial light modulator, SLM, at the Fourier plane.

The proposed technique significantly reduces the processing time needed for real-time applications. The paper was accepted to be presented into this year SPIE Optics + Photonics, on August 5th, on the poster presentation type.

Also Hugo Beltrán worked for eight months with Dr. Jorge Flores on an optical current sensor monitored with LABVIEW. This sensor will be presented on September 11 on a Poster in the VII Symposium of Optics in Industry. This sensor will be a fundamental part for his thesis.

Anuar Beltrán worked with Dr. Guillermo García and Dr. Jorge Flores on a system capable of locating and object in the viewing field of a CCD camera, pointing at the object and following it. This work was presented in the LI National Meeting of Physics-II Latinamerican Meeting of Physics on October 20-24 of 2008.

Participation in congresses

Optics + Photonics Meeting in San Diego July 31- August 6, 2009. Jorge Sánchez and José Juvenal Ramírez travelled to San Diego. José Juvenal, president of the chapter, was supported with the Officer Traveling Grant. Our partner Jorge was supported with the SPIE Contingency Student Travel Grant so he could present on a poster the “Spatial integrating joint transform correlator for pattern recognition by use of an infinite grating filter” research project.

José Ramírez and Jorge Sanchez were our chapter representants at the Student chapters leadership workshop. As they participated in all the leadership talks and activities they got new knowledge about the management and direction of an organization, like our student chapter.

They also attended to the conferences, meals and events in the Optics+ Photonics meeting, such as “No ties”, in which the members of different chapters hanged out and “Lunch with the experts”, where our chapter members could spend time with executives and researchers of different multinational companies. Also the “All-conference Welcome reception” dinner at the Marriot hotel that had a Mexican theme.

Jorge and José spend time with the other chapters in the “Student Chapter Exhibit Mixer”. We are looking forward to participating in it next year with a presentation of our chapter.

VII Symposium of Optics in Industry in Guadalajara

One of our current activities is to collaborate in the organization of the VII Symposium of Optics in Industry, that will take place in September 10th, 11th and 12th and for which we invited all chapters in Mexico to attend the event and work together and the Univ. Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Univ. de Guanajuato, Ctr. De Investigaciones en Óptica and the Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica chapters have confirmed their participation in this event. Now we are making the arrangements needed for it to be done. The chapters activities planned besides attending workshops and conferences are providing visual information about each chapter recent work and about the research center or university they belong to, organizing a round table just for SPIE student chapters so we can discuss our ideas and plan future collective chapter activities. Jorge Sánchez, Hugo Beltrán and Jaime Ramírez had already sent abstracts and they will participate on poster session. Our chapter applied to the visiting lecturer program grant to bring Dr. Alan Kost to the symposium for the lecture Advanced concepts for photovoltaics.

Visiting research centers

As students get their degree they need to set options for their further education. There are some master courses in other universities and research centers and some of the students in our university, included the chapter members Hugo Beltrán and Jorge Sánchez, attended to a course from may 13 to may 22 at the Centro de Investigaciones en Óptica (CIO).

There they got a closer view of the different optics fields worked on this research center and meet researchers and professors, as well as CIO Student Chapter members. On this visit our members could work with some of the doctors, working with fibers and an interferometer.

This kind of visits helped our chapter members to meet different places in our country to continue with our postgraduate studies.
