University Association of South Ostrobothnia (Epky)
* is a stable promoter of university level education in the region of South
Ostrobothnia. * was established in 1960 to provide university level education (Summer
university) and to promote research work, development and co-operation in the field of higher education policy in the region.
* has been co-ordinating the work of South Ostrobothnian University
Network Epanet since 1999. Epky provides diversified services to the network and builds up co-operation between academic and non-academic organisations. It also collects funds for the actual research work.
The members: all the municipalities in the region, Helsinki University Ruralia-institute and Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. The board has 13 members.
Epanet-network: Origin, when and why?

– Increasing the wellfare of the area

Epanet is also mentioned in most of the other regional programmes &
policy papers in South Ostrobothnia.
Concept • Forming research groups of high quality on
the branches needed in South Ostrobothnia. • The groups are led by fixed-term research
professors. • The basic resource for professorships are
collected by the University Association. • Each professor is gathering a research group
of 3–5 people (using different sources of money).
• The groups are working in South Ostrobothnia, most of them in Frami, Seinäjoki.
• Epanet forms an essential part in the content of University Consortium of Seinäjoki.
• Agreements with public financiers and more than one hundred private donators.
• All the South Ostrobothnian municipalities are financing the Epanet network.

University Consortium of Seinäjoki
• The University Consortium of Seinäjoki (UCS) is a multidisciplinary scientific community of some 100 people.
• The member universities are the universities of Tampere, Helsinki and Vaasa, the Sibelius Academy and Tampere University of Technology.
• The UCS is co-ordinated by the University of Tampere.
• Operations concentrate on research and development work, which is done mainly in Epanet-network. The education is adult education realised as teaching through the open university, as degree-oriented teaching or continuing education.
• The operations of the UCS combine internationality and local co-operation. The UCS is actively involved in the development work of innovation environments. The objective is the renewal of business life, services and culture through scientific knowledge.
• There are five other university consortiums in Finland: Kajaani, Kokkola, Lahti, Mikkeli and Pori.
• The co-operation platform for Seinäjoki University Consortium and Seinäjoki University for Applied Sciences is the University Consortium of South Ostrobothnia.
