Advanced Skills & Innovation Centrethe hub of the University Centre at Wakefield College

New for 2017!

I’m delighted to have the opportunity to introduce you to our higher education prospectus for the University Centre at Wakefield College. Whether you’re considering studying with us for the first time, or you’re one of the growing number of our current or past students looking to study higher education, we hope that this prospectus will give you the information you need to help you to make one of the most significant decisions of your life.

We have a well-established and growing range of university-level courses, which in many cases lead to awards from our partner universities. We’re an alternative higher education provider and we put you, the learner, at the heart of everything we do.

Embarking on undergraduate study locally instead of travelling further afield is a choice which an increasing number of students are recognising as both attractive and practical.

You could be one of the first students to benefit from our new £7 million Advanced Skills & Innovation Centre, which will become the hub for our University Centre and help us to meet our ambition to provide our higher education students with a high quality experience. The Centre will support our core value of employability, by opening up new opportunities for you to work with employers and each other, and to set up new businesses in a supported environment.

We strive for excellence in our teaching, which supports your employability, and to offer outstanding resources which will enhance your real-world learning experience. Many of our courses are designed in conjunction with employers, which reaffirms our commitment to place the high-level skills which industry needs at the forefront of delivery.

At the same time, we’re keen to support you in achieving your academic potential in every way. Our class sizes are relatively small and we ensure that contact time with tutors is maximised, with opportunities for individual support. As a result of this combined focus on skills development and support, we have a proud history of achievement, with many results improving year-on-year and alumni progressing to a broad range of destinations, from postgraduate study to work within high-profile companies.

You’re warmly invited to come and visit us to find out about higher education choices, talk to our staff and students, and get a feel of what we have on offer, we’re sure you’ll be impressed.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

“I chose this course as it combines mystrengths and interests, and thanks to the studyenvironment and the organisation of thecourse here, making the decision to change mycareer and return to study was easy. The coursereally stood out to me due to the amount ofcontact time with the tutors, the small classsizes, and the schedule, which made it easier forme to juggle working full-time while continuingmy studies.

During the course, my tutor put me in contactwith a small digital agency called 6B Digital, andI was offered a job. Student finance can consist of grants, loans, bursaries and/or allowances, and is intended to help you with tuition fees and living costs, or maintenance, which are the main types of cost you’ll have while you’re studying.

HE student survey 2015/16

Full-time students You’ll normally have to pay your tuition fees as well as your living costs while you’re studying. You can apply for loans to help with these costs.

Tuition Fee Loan Tuition fees are the amount your university or college charges each year to attend your course. This is paid direct to your institution in three instalments throughout the academic year. The information on this page is for students thinking about starting a course in the 2017/18 academic year (from 1 August 2017).

Maintenance Loan This helps with your living costs and is paid to you in three instalments throughout the academic year. The figures shown below are maximum loan amounts for each academic year. Living with parents: up to £7,097 Not living with parents: up to £8,430

Additional financial support There is additional support in the form of grants and allowances that you do not have to pay back*. Childcare Grant (CCG): CCG is help with childcare costs if you’ve got a dependent child under the age of 15 at the beginning of the academic year, or under 17, if they have special educational needs. You have to be using registered, approved childcare.Parents’ Learning Allowance (PLA) is help with course-related costs if you have children who depend on you. You can apply for PLA even if you choose not to apply for a Childcare Grant (CCG).Adult Dependants’ Grant (ADG): helps with the additional costs that you may have if you’re financially responsible for another adult.*These grants are usually paid in three instalments, one at the start of each term. It’s paid directly into your bank account at the same time as your other student finance payments.

Disabled Students’ Allowance: this provides help towards the additional costs that you might face as a result of a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition, or specific learning difficulty

Part-time students If your course starts in academic year 2017/18, you can apply for: • a Tuition Fee Loan of up to £6,935 (or £4,625 for

privately-funded courses), and•Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs).

EU students Lots of students from overseas choose to study in the UK. If you’re an EU national, or the family member of an EU national, and are studying at a university or college in England you might be able to get student finance to help pay for your tuition fees. If you’re from outside the EU you won’t normally be able to get student finance from us.

To get a Tuition Fee Loan you must: • be an EU national, or the family member of an EU national • have lived in the EEA or Switzerland for three years or more

before the start of your course, and • be studying on a course that qualifies for student finance

Repayments You might not be thinking about how you’ll repay your student loan right now, but it’s really important to understand exactly what’s involved for when the time comes to repay. When you finish your course you need to repay any loans you’ve borrowed – but not until your income is over the current repayment threshold of £21,000 a year, £1,750 a month or £404 a week. If you’re a full-time student you’ll be due to start repaying your loan the April after you finish or leave your course. If you’re studying part-time, you’ll be due to start repaying the April four years after the start of your course or the April after you finish or leave your course, whichever comes first.

How much? The amount you repay each month is based on your income, not what you borrow. You’ll repay 9% of any income you earn over the current repayment threshold of £21,000 a year, £1,750 a month or £404 a week. If your income changes, either rising or falling, your repayment amounts will change to reflect this. If you stop working, your repayments will stop until you start working again and your income is over the threshold. For more information on the support available and how to apply go to: www.gov.uk/student-finance

Guide to our qualificationsLevels and qualifications explained

Access to HEIf you’re aged 19 or over and have been out of education for some time, this course will help you to re-engage with learning. The course is one-year long and will allow you to progress to study at higher education level.

HNCs (Higher National Certificates) and HNDs (Higher National Diplomas)Awarded by Edexcel, these are vocationally focussed qualifications that can lead straight on to a career or act as a stepping stone to a higher qualification.

Foundation degreesThese are qualifications which combine academic study with work-based learning. They’re designed in partnership with employers and are validated and awarded by universities. A full-time foundation degree is usually two years long, and is slightly different to a traditional three-year honours degree, as it has an emphasis on subjects which are directly relevant to specific sectors. Learning time is usually split between the workplace and the classroom. As well as meeting skills shortages, foundation degrees are designed to make higher education more accessible. After completing a foundation degree you can progress to a top-up course and achieve a full honours degree. This usually involves a year of full-time study.

Higher apprenticeshipDeveloped in consultation with leading industry employers to meet their future skills needs, these courses are endorsed by professional industry bodies. Higher apprenticeships are a practical alternative to gaining a degree-level education, and can also be used as a route into a full honours degree.

Honours degrees (BA, BSc)Also known as first degrees or undergraduate degrees. Honours degrees can be gained in different areas, including Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) and Bachelor of Law (LLB). They can be awarded with Honours or without (a Pass or Ordinary degree) and can involve the study of a single subject or a combination of subjects.

Postgraduate studyStudy normally undertaken after achieving an undergraduate degree, this can lead to qualifications such as MA (Master of Arts), MSc (Master of Science), and research degrees such as MPhil (Master of Philosophy) or PhD (Doctor of Philosophy).

I had theopportunity to see a variety of performancesboth locally and nationally, which helped meto learn about different theatre companies andhow they perform. The structure of the courseand the guidance I received during my time as astudent was excellent. Every unit was planned toprovide the best experience of what theindustry is really like and there were plenty ofone-to-one support sessions with tutors.

I now run my own company called Love 2 Actwhich teaches drama workshops to primaryschool children in and around Wakefield. Thevaried units on the course have prepared me forthis as they taught me how to direct, managebehaviour and progress, and how to plan each ofmy sessions effectively. Without this course andthe support from the tutors leading it, I wouldn’tbe doing what I am today!”

“I chose to study here as I completed the Level3 Extended Diploma in Public Services at theCollege and it was natural for my next step to bea course at the University Centre. “I’m a mature student, so this course was idealas it allowed me to juggle study and my jobsas Head Coach of the College rugby league team and semi-professional Rugby League player. The delivery of the modules was excellent and I received brilliant supportfrom staff. I know I wouldn’t have had as muchsupport if I’d studied at a traditional universitydue to the sheer volume of students.

After I completed the course, I decided to stayon in my role as Head Coach as I wanted toestablish a pathway for our students to go on andplay professional rugby league by furthering ourpartnership with the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

I’d highly recommend the course to anybodywho’s looking to continue their studies. I can’t speak highly enough of the staff andtheir specialist knowledge. Anybody who hasaspirations of studying a degree programshould seriously consider attending theUniversity Centre at Wakefield College.”

Equality & diversity We aim to be a fully inclusive organisation, eliminating discrimination whilst promoting equality and embracing diversity in all that we do. We celebrate the rich variety of people who make up our College Community, from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Some may have a disability, others may follow different religions. We may differ in our sexual orientation, languages, or belief systems, but we’re united by an ambition to succeed and fulfil our potential.

These principles recognise and support the Equality Duty set out in the 2010 Equality Act, in that we give due regard to the need to:

• eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation

• advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

• foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

This applies to all of the protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

How we demonstrate our commitment From the outset, at the induction, staff are clear about our expectations of them in terms of supporting equality and celebrating diversity. This commitment is further underlined in policies, planning, and staff training. We ensure that all policies are analysed to address any negative impact in relation to all protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010: sex, race, disability, marriage and civil partnership, sexual orientation, religion or belief, pregnancy and maternity, gender reassignment and age. We’re firmly committed to equality objectives which will make a real difference in the classroom. Planning in the classroom is expected to maximise opportunities to promote diversity and foster good relationships among all groups of students. Regular training and development initiatives support staff in making this a reality. In keeping with our strategic objectives we aim to:

• connect with our area in order to raise aspirations, particularly in deprived areas

• continue to play an active part in initiatives across the Wakefield district to eliminate discrimination and promote equality and diversity.

Measuring our progress The effectiveness of these policies is monitored through a comprehensive range of measures, which involves regular collection, reporting, and analysis of staff and learner data on the basis of a range of demographic factors. An annual report on equality and diversity, including monitoring data, is considered by our Board of Governors.

Go Higher West Yorkshire The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) funded Go Higher West Yorkshire National Collaborative Outreach Programme, comprises 12 Higher Education (HE) providers in West Yorkshire.

The 2 year programme supports access to higher education for young people aged 13 to 19 in areas of West Yorkshire where participation in Higher Education is lower than expected based on GCSE results. The programme’s aim is for more young people to progress into HE and make more informed choices at key points during their education.

The programme will work closely with young people and their parents/carers to raise attainment and support young people’s progression into HE through a wide range of focused and innovative events and activities from career planning to HE taster days to ‘world of work’ experiences.
