KEAN UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION BOARD CHAIR

Hello Friends!

One of the things we love about this report is that it gives us the opportunity to look back at the year and be grateful for our students’ successes and for the who helped make that happen. We are in awe

of our students who strive to succeed, many in spite of challenges, and the spirit they bring to campus. This is what motivates us to work hard to help them achieve their goals and hopefully

inspire others to do the same.

From our New Jersey campuses in Union and Toms River to our burgeoning campus in Wenzhou, China, Kean University is growing in academic caliber, services and influence.

On our main campus in Union, we have launched four new graduate programs: Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology, Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies, Master of Architecture in the Michael Graves College and most recently the Speech-Language Pathology Doctorate, which represents one of only six in the nation. We can’t wait to see those amazing students making their mark here at Kean and then taking

what they’ve learned out into the world.

Another important development last year was the opening of the new 114,700 square foot North Avenue Academic Building. There in this new state-of-the-art structure, we are

able to offer those new programs in Allied Health, Nursing, Physical Therapy and Physician’s As-sistant Studies. It is also the new home of the Computer Science program.

In May 2015 Kean University’s Global Business School launched its innovative Global Business Practicum, which was designed to meet the growing demand for professionals with the cross-cultural literacies needed to thrive in today’s marketplace. It served as yet another example of how Kean strives to offer programs that have a perfect balance of mentorship and autonomy.

Also in September of last year, Ocean County College and Kean marked the 10th anniversary of their partnership, in which over 1,700 Kean upper-division and graduate students take classes each semester in the Kean Ocean Gateway Building on OCC’s campus in Toms River.

At Wenzhou-Kean University, a stamp of approval from the Middle States Commission and the Chinese Ministry of Education in 2016 made Kean the only public university in the U.S. operating

a full-scale university in China. And this past May, we graduated the institution’s inaugural 187 students, 27 of which received the Sobel Global Wenzhou Scholarship. We are proud to report that

70 percent of our graduates went on to pursue a graduate degree and that enrollment is projected to rise to 3,500 by 2020.

We have also added 39 new faculty members who are helping shape the additional

programs and facilitate and bolster the important work that our faculty are already accomplishing.

So as you see, from potential medical breakthrough technology to exposure to award-winning architecture to a foray into forensic psychology, our students have the chance to learn what-ever they want and are equipped with the tools needed to succeed…and who knows, if they get that education bug, they might even stick around and go for one of our doctorates. After all, our combined school and clinical psychology doctorate is now accredited. The opportunities really are endless. And the feeling is contagious.

Kean’s commitment to critical, global thinking and offering students an affordable education continued to be entrenched in everything we do and stand for. Amid all the change, there were also constants that served to strengthen our established foundation. Places like the Human Rights Institute and Liberty Hall are still important venues for education and enrichment. At the Institute, we focused our annual program in 2016 on incarceration and the many flaws of the nation’s justice system, while our theaters offered professional performances of the Children of Eden, Julius Caesar and John J. Wooten’s Kiss the Bride.

We are happy to report that in the 2015-16 academic year, we awarded over $814,000 in Foundation scholarships. For some, this meant the difference between whether or not they would have a shot at an education. For others, it was the deciding factor in choosing Kean. It was an honor to give students opportunities that might not have been possible without the scholar-ship and serve as a stepping stone toward realizing their dreams.

Although we work hard to m ke dreams possible for our students, we couldn’t do this without a tremendous amount of help and the backing of a motivating group of people who work hard at promoting Kean’s message of equality, entrepreneurship and giving back. And in this ever-changing world, we realize that a global mindset is crucial as is a reliance on strong mentors and viable opportunities that give our students that edge they need.

So, to our Kean friends, we offer you our sincerest thanks. And to our students, we say kudos for seizing the opportunity and taking advantage of all that life has to offer! We look forward to continuing to work with our Foundation Board, with our alumni, and with all of you who have helped make Kean University what it is today.

Warm Regards from

SCOTT SCHOBER ’92 RELEASES FIRST BOOK

Scott Schober, a Foundation board member since 2014, published his first book in 2016. Reflecting a bitter dose of irony, Hacked Again details the ins and outs of cybersecurity and how he was person-ally impacted repeatedly by hackers.

Tabbed a cybersecurity pundit and expert, Schober chronicles his harrowing experiences with hope that his story will help others avoid a similar demise. He shows in his book that even experts in the field are not impervious to the wrath of hackers.

Schober is the CEO of Berkeley Varitronics Systems and regular contributor to Time, Money and Fortune magazines. He has also appeared as a guest on Bloomberg TV, ABC, CBS, Fox Business News,

Good Morning America, CNN, CNBC and many more.

Kean’s student center is now the Miron Student Center, thanks to a generous donation from Diane Goldblatt Miron ‘61 and her husband Bob Miron. In addition to major renovations in the student center, the generous donation made in 2015 was designated as a matching gift to leverage and spark giving from new alumni donors to Kean University.

A dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in October of 2015 to commemorate the important change. The ceremony included the presentation of an official commendation from Elizabeth Mayor and two-time Kean graduate Chris Bollwage to Diane.

“Everyone comes here to eat, study, work, attend events, and socialize, in the process forming valuable connections in a way that happens at virtually no other location on campus. So we are absolutely delighted that Diane and Bob chose this unique campus facility as the beneficiary of their very generous gift, and we also celebrate their interest in having a portion of their gift serve as an incentive to attract potential new donors to Kean,” said President Dawood Farahi, Ph.D.

Diane Miron, a native of Elizabeth, NJ, was an education student at the then-Newark State College. After attaining her degree, she became a fourth-grade teacher for many years and is retired from the Fayetteville-Manlius (N.Y.) Central School District.

“Kean University is where it all started for me, and Bob and I are very happy to be able to give something back to this wonderful institution that benefits such a wide range of its people,” said Diane. “In particular, we wanted to do something that would be helpful to the students. The majority of them are commuters, just like I was more than 50 years ago, and it’s very important to have high quality, comfortable facilities on campus to help them feel at home and reach

their highest potential.”

Following her retirement, she began advising teachers on how to use the technology of cable television in the classroom. She served as the Cable in the Classroom Coordinator for NewChannels Corp. and Time Warner Cable in more than 100 schools in upstate New York. This innovative project allowed commercial-free programming to be provided by cable programmers for use as a tool in the classroom, geared for grades 4-12. She also served as an advisor to the Turner Networks in their Cable in the Classroom program development.

Bob Miron retired in 2010 after a 50-year career in broadcasting, with 44 of those years spent in the cable industry.

Bob and Diane Miron are long-time residents of Syracuse, NY. Married for more than 50 years, they

have three children and nine grandchildren.

Kean University Honor 2016 Distinguished Alumni

President Dawood Farahi, Ph.D., and the Kean University Alumni Association lauded five recipients of the annual Distinguished Alumni Award at a luncheon and ceremony held on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the

institution’s STEM Building. While the recipients represented a broad range of academic backgrounds and career paths, they all share a common sense of pride for their alma mater. The 2016

recipients are:

• Michael J. Cleary ’73, of South Plainfield, N.J.

• Joan Marie Granato ’88 of Bayonne, N.J.

• Jamel C. Holley ’06 MPA, of Roselle, N.J.

• Marjorie A. Perry ’74, of East Orange, N.J.

• Dr. Dennis M. Todd ’70, of Tuxedo Park, N.Y.

Michael J. Cleary ’73 is a retired 35-year veteran and former chief of the East Orange, N.J. Police Department. During his time as a student, Cleary was a member of

the University’s first lacrosse and football teams as well as editor of the school newspaper and yearbook. An active member of the Sigma Beta Tau Fraternity, Cleary spearheaded and participated in

many service projects with his brothers. Even 43 years after graduating, he continues to be dedicated to Kean University as an assistant coach on the men’s lacrosse team.

Joan Marie Granato ’88 is the president of Future Focus Inc., Creative Health Care Consultants. Future Focus Inc. provides health care consulting services, educational experiences and development, and implementation of new facilities throughout the tri-state area. After graduation from Kean University, Granato furthered her studies in Therapeutic Recreation at New York University. She is also trained by A.L.T.A. as an Assisted Living Administrator. Additionally, she holds a C.L.A. (Certified Leisure Associate) and C.R.A. (Certified Recreation Administrator). During her career, Granato has worked as a consultant for various retirement communities, nursing homes, adult medical and social day care centers, hospitals, and substance abuse organizations. Granato is also a sister of Alpha Theta Pi Sorority.

Known for his spirited energy and focus, Jamel C. Holley ’06 MPA has utilized his degree to incorporate advocacy with accomplishment, improving issues important to his constituents, first in his hometown of Roselle, N.J. where he served as mayor and now at the county and state levels as an assemblyman representing the 20th Legislative District. His 2015 appointment to the assembly makes Holley the first African American to represent the 20th Legislative District in the N.J. Legislature.

Marjorie A. Perry ’74 is the president and CEO of MZM Construction & Management Company, Inc. She is also an innovator, public speaker, writer and role model for women and minorities in business. Using her extraordinary path to success and 26 years of experience as fodder for inspiration, Perry looks back on her degree as an education and credits it for helping her find her calling: “motivating nascent entrepreneurs” to develop and pursue their dreams. She has a lengthy history of dedication to her alma mater, serving as a member of the Foundation Board of Directors as well as a being a scholarship donor

Throughout his career, Dr. Dennis M. Todd ’70 has combined a passion for the medical field with roles in technology, business, academia, and public service. Upon graduation from Kean, Todd enlisted in the United States Army and served three years on active duty as a medical laboratory technologist, after which he earned a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Lehigh University and went onto a tremendously successful career in the medical research industry. Todd is currently the president and chief executive for Bergen Community Regional Blood Center in Paramus, N.J. He also spent time as an adjunct professor at several institutions throughout the region, and is a former member of the Kean University Biotechnology Graduate

Program Advisory Committee.

Alumni Association President Edward Esposito ’69 ’72 MA appreciates the diverse and robust backgrounds of each recipient. “As we honor these distinguished alumni, I can’t help but notice the unique and fascinating backgrounds each one of them has,” said Esposito. “Their personal, academic, and professional backgrounds vary dramatically, much like our students today; but something they do share is an ongoing connection and affinity with Kean and that is sensational.”

The Legacy of Kean University Alumni Lives On

EDUCATION-PHILANTHROPISTS

The Kean University community mourned the loss of one of its most devoted friends, Maxine Lane ’78 in 2016, but we treasure the memories she created and the lasting impression she left on our institution

and all who had the honor of knowing her.

Maxine, a longtime friend, advocate and patron of the University, died in May 2016 at the age of 90. Despite humble beginnings growing up in rural Arkansas during the Depression, Maxine

burgeoned into a model of optimism, compassion and generosity. She was an inspiration to all who knew her as she embraced her role as an alumna of Kean.

“Maxine Lane was and always will be a special member of the Kean family,” said Kean President Dr. Dawood Farahi following her death. “Her kindness and altruism will live on through her generous gift to the University, which will help support Kean students for years to come.”

As part of her philanthropy to Kean, Maxine left her entire estate to Kean, making her Kean’s single largest donor. In 2008, she had endowed a scholarship for students in

healthcare or education, which has thus far enabled 48 students to benefit from her generosity.

Kean’s Center for Academic of Success (CAS) was named after Maxine and her husband, Jack, in 2009 for their generosity to the campus.

Although Maxine will be sorely missed, the imprint of her contributions will be felt for generations to come, and the intense sense of loyalty and passion for living and loving others will resonate in the hearts of those who

knew her and will continue to do so in her memory.

Many recall her warm sentiments at the Nathan Weiss Graduate College commencement in 2014 when she accepted an honorary degree from Kean and told the graduates, “You know I love you. You know I do. I am supposed to love myself first, but I can’t help it. I love you more.”

The debut of the Alumni-Student Mentoring program, a partnership between the Kean University Alumni Association and the Alumni Leadership Initiative committee, was met with much enthusiasm and resounding success last spring. Twenty-one pairs of senior class students were matched with alumni mentors to work on career readiness from January through May in preparation for their upcoming graduations.

Nearly all indicated a strong interest in continuing their mentoring relationship beyond the formal program, citing in surveys that the program was effective in helping them feel more confident about gaining employment or taking their next steps after graduation from Kean.

The program is continuing to grow, doubling its reach and engaging both seniors and recent graduates in mentor pairings with alumni professionals. Over 600 Kean students expressed interest in having alumni mentors. As a result, more than 40 pairs met in October at which time they explored things like job shadowing, advice on resume writing, job interview tips and social media strategies.

The pairs are matched according to major, career choice, professional interests and goals through a specialized mentoring software. Student mentees can also choose a gender preference for a mentor and the appropriate location and distance. The pairs are asked to meet with one another face-to-face at least once a month for two hours.

MEDALLION SOCIETYThe Medallion Society celebrates planned philanthropy at Kean University. Some of the ways that Medallion Society donors manifest their support is through bequests, charitable gift annuities, insurance policies, and estate planning. The Medallion Society represents a collective legacy that will help sustain the entire campus community for many years to come.
