University Honors Program September 2009 Newsletter Volume 2.1 MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR CONTENTS Greetings from the University Honors Program! The Fall semester is now underway and the Honors program is again surging with activity with its students back on campus. Many of our students have returned from vacation or work, while others sustained their academic experience through the summer by participating in internships and study abroad. We are particularly excited by our incoming class of first-year Honors students who are already making their voices heard in the campus community. To all students - the faculty and staff of the Honors Program are here to guide you toward the best possible academic experience, and to provide you opportunities to socialize and to apply your leadership at ISU. The University Honors Student Association, under the leadership of sophomore Ashley Walters, has already laid plans for many interesting events and opportunities in the coming months. Students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni and donors - please stop by and visit our program offices in the Rhoads Hall Mezzanine. We would enjoy the opportunity to talk with you about new developments in the program, and the achievements of our students. We have introduced a new Honors curriculum this fall, designed to build student cohorts, sequentially develop student skills and experiences, and create more (and more interesting) pathways to program completion. In addition, the student artwork for the 2009-2010 Rhoads gallery has been selected and will be revealed in a forthcoming reception. So welcome, and welcome back everyone! After Images is Indiana State University's Honors journal for the publication of student, creative works. Drawing on the notion of afterimage: a mental or visual image that is retained by the senses and produces a lasting sensation, the journal seeks to provide a forum for student expression, promoting art and creative writing at Indiana State University. The journal is run by Indiana State University Honors students and accepts submissions from all current undergraduate Indiana State University students. If you are interested in being a part of the After Images student staff or in contributing your creative work for the Spring 2010 volume, please contact the Faculty Advisor, Dr. Keri Yousif, via email at [email protected].

MID-EAST HONORS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE The University Honors Program at ISU is playing a key role in the planning of the 2010 Mid-East Honors Association (MEHA) Conference. Honors Director Greg Bierly is the MEHA President, Honors Faculty Linda Maule continues as Executive Secretary, Krystal Griffith is Student Vice President, and Ashley Walters is a student representative. The four of them are working with individuals from Honors programs at other colleges and universities in the region to plan the logistics for the Spring 2010 MEHA Conference.

The 2010 MEHA Conference will take place at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, KY the weekend of March 26-28.The theme of this year’s conference is A League of Our Own: Hitting it Home with Honors. The regional Honors conference is an opportunity for Honors students, faculty, and staff to network with individuals from other schools, gain presentation experience, and share ideas about Honors classes, programming, advising, and student organizations. Opportunities to give conference presentations as undergraduate students help make ISU’s Honors students more competitive when they later apply for employment and graduate schools. Indiana State University regularly has a number of students attend the conference and give presentations. If you are working on a project this semester, please consider sharing it in a presentation or poster session at MEHA! Students will have the opportunity to submit 25 minute presentations individually or in groups. These presentations can relate either to your coursework or your experiences in Honors. Creating a poster presentation of your research or creative project is another option. Submissions for presentations will be due by February 1, 2010, and submissions for posters by March 1, 2010. All submissions will need an abstract explaining the project. More information, including the call for papers and sample abstracts, can be found at:

HONORS STUDENTS ABROAD

Page 4

Each semester, including during the summer, a number of Honors students choose to take their studies abroad and experience living in another country while taking courses that will earn them credit toward completion of the University Honors Program curriculum. All

Honors students will earn Honors credit for coursework completed abroad. Additionally, students beginning Honors in Fall 2009 who choose to pursue the Global Perspectives elective track are expected to study abroad to partially fulfill the requirements for that track. Several Honors students share their experiences abroad each semester on the Honors website. This semester Sarah Tillman is sending updates from Argentina and Nicole Smith is sending updates from England. To read study abroad updates and view pictures, visit: www.indstate.edu/honors/spotlight/studyabroad/students.htm If you are interested in more information about studying abroad, please contact Janis Halpern, Coordinator for Academic Programs Abroad, at [email protected] or (812) 237-3427, or visit the ISU Study Abroad office in Stalker Hall 215. You are also encouraged to attend the Fall 2009 Study Abroad Fair in HMSU Dede III on Wednesday, October 14 from 1:00-4:00pm.

THE QUEST FOR DEMOCRACY In addition to studying abroad for a semester, some students have the opportunity to travel on shorter study tours affiliated with Honors classes. In May 2009, 14 students spent 3 weeks traveling to Washington DC, Greece, and Italy to enhance their understanding of the ancient roots of democracy. The study tour followed the Spring 2009 GH301E: Quest for Democracy course, co-taught by Honors Faculty Marilyn Bisch and Linda Maule. The tour began with several days in Washington DC visiting many of the government buildings and landmarks that are vital to our current democratic process. From there, the group spent a week and a half in Greece, where they visited historical sites in Athens, took day trips to Delphi and the Temple of Poseidon, and a embarked on a cruise around the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. The final week was spent in Rome, Italy, where students experienced the Roman Forum, spent an afternoon in the Vatican City, and walked through the ruins of Pompeii and the ancient Mediterranean port city of Ostia Antica.

HONORS PEER ADVISORS The University Honors Program has hired eight Honors Peer Advisors for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Honors Peers Advisors are experienced Honors students who mentor new Honors students and promote participation in the University Honors Program. The Honors Peer Advisors are uniquely suited to be freshmen mentors, as they know first-hand what it is like to be a motivated student, take Honors classes, live on campus, participate in extra-curricular activities, utilize effective time management, etc.

ALPHA LAMBDA DELTA During the Spring 2009 semester, the Indiana State University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta initiated a record 165 freshmen into the organization. Because of this accomplishment, Alpha Lambda Delta has awarded the ISU chapter the Gold Award for the second year in a row. Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes students who excel academically during their first semester of college. To be eligible, students must earn a 3.5 or higher GPA, and be in the top 20 percent of their freshmen class. Initiates are recognized for their academic achievements, have leadership opportunities through the ISU chapter, and are eligible for scholarships through the national organization.

UNIVERSITY HONORS STUDENT ASSOCIATION The purpose of the University Honors Student Association (UHSA) is to establish a collective vocal presence within the university community; and to provide opportunities for leadership and extracurricular activities. All Honors students are welcome to attend UHSA meetings and events.

This semester, UHSA will be meeting on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. The first meeting of each month will be a formal business meeting, while the second will be an abbreviated business meeting, followed by a guest speaker. Participating in UHSA will be an excellent way for Honors students to network with each other and prominent members of the campus community. On Tuesday, September 22, the UHSA speaker series began with a visit from President and Mrs. Bradley. In addition to their regular meetings, UHSA will be coordinating a number of programs this semester that all Honors students are invited to participate in. In October, UHSA will be walking in the ISU Homecoming Parade and hosting a tent at Tent City. Volunteers will be welcome for both events! The 2009-2010 UHSA Officers and Committee Chairs are: President Ashley Walters ([email protected]), Vice President Megan Cornett ([email protected]), Secretary Erik McCreary ([email protected]), Treasurer Chase Buchanan ([email protected]), Historian Jordan Busboom ([email protected]), Events Chair Danek Znika ([email protected]), Public Relations Chair Britany Dean ([email protected]), Advertising Chair Leslie Brown ([email protected]), and Fundraising Chair Brianna Ballard ([email protected]).

PRESIDENT’S SCHOLARS ASSOCIATION The President’s Scholars Association (PSA) strives to create a positive learning environment that gives President's Scholars and President's Academic Excellence Scholars at Indiana State University a chance to connect with their peers, faculty members, and community leaders. The organization offers various social, leadership, and volunteer opportunities to create a sense of community within the scholarship program.

This semester, the President’s Scholars Association will be meeting the first Thursday of each month at 6:00pm in the Rhoads Honors Classroom. They will also be participating in one service activity each month. For their first philanthropy event, they will be walking in the Race for The Cure to raise money for breast cancer research on Saturday, October 3.

The President’s Scholars had their annual retreat at the ISU Field Campus in Brazil, IN the weekend of September 12-13. This was an opportunity for new and returning scholars to develop a sense of community, and also to interact with some of the Honors faculty and staff. At the retreat, they participated in a number of teambuilding activities, scaled the climbing tower, and had the opportunity to eat breakfast with ISU’s President Bradley.

The 2009-2010 PSA Officers are: President Rebecca Campbell ([email protected]), Vice President Sarah Buck ([email protected]), Secretary Robert Compton ([email protected]), and Treasurer Sarah Stetter ([email protected]).
