James JonesThe Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Men’s Basketball

STAFF

Jones was an assistant coach for the 2007 USA Basketball Men’s Pan American Games team.

James Jones has made quite an impact on the Yale basketball program. In nine seasons, Jones has guided Yale to success not seen in New Haven in 40 years. In 2001-02, Jones led the Bulldogs to their first Ivy League title since 1962-63 and the first post-season tournament victory in the 107-year history of Yale basketball. The team won 21 games, the second most in the modern era of Yale basketball, and reached the second round of the National Invitation Tournament. Jones’ success did not go unnoticed. He was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year by Bas-ketball America and CollegeInsider.com. Following Yale’s weekend sweep of Penn and Princeton, Dick Vitale selected Jones as his Coach of the Week. Jones, the longest tenured coach in the Ivy League, earned his 100th victory at Yale when the Bulldogs beat Columbia on Feb. 9, 2007. He is only the fourth coach in school history with at

least 100 wins. His overall record at Yale is 117-134, including a 69-57 (.548) mark in Ivy games. The Bulldogs have won at least 10 Ivy games twice during his tenure and have had a .500 or better record in league play in each of the last eight years, which hasn’t happened at Yale since the official start of Ivy play in 1956-57. Jones was named Yale’s 22nd head coach on Apr. 27, 1999, and he immediately put his stamp on the program as the Bull-dogs more than doubled their Division I win total from the previous season and improved to fifth place in the Ivy League. In 2000-2001 the turnaround continued as Yale entered the final weekend of the regular season in the hunt for the Ivy League championship. The captain of that 2000-01 team, Neil Yanke, signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004. Jones recruited Yanke to Yale as an assistant coach and then was his head coach for two years. In the 2001-02, Jones guided the Bulldogs to one of the most memorable seasons in school history. Yale finished 21-11 and earned a share of the Ivy title with Penn and Princeton. The Bulldogs upset Rutgers in the first round of the NIT before falling to Tennessee Tech at the New Haven Coliseum in front of the largest crowd ever to watch Yale Basketball in New Haven. In the process the Bulldogs set five school records. The 2,394 points scored was a new mark, topping the 2,089 scored by the 1948-49 team. The Bulldogs also set new records for three-pointers made (228) and attempted (671), and for most free throws made (558) and attempted (796). Several of Jones’ players have gone on to play professionally overseas, including Ted Smith (England), Matt Minoff (Israel), Paul Vitelli (Italy), Dominick Martin (Spain), Matt Kyle (Portugal), Caleb Holmes (Iceland) and Edwin Draughan (France). Draughan, who graduated in 2005, was one of the most successful players in Yale history. He finished seventh all-time at Yale in scoring with 1,413 points and second in steals and fifth in assists. One of Jones’ goals when he took the job was to upgrade Yale’s schedule, a promise he has delivered on. In 2001-02 the Bulldogs finished 1-0 against the Big Ten (Penn State), 1-0 against the ACC (Clemson), 1-0 against the Big East (Rutgers) and 1-1 against the Atlantic 10 (win over Rhode Island, loss to George Washington). In addition, Yale played in the inau-gural Guardians Classic, a pre-season tournament. In 2000-01, Penn State became the first Big Ten school to play in the Payne Whitney Gym, and in 2003-04 Wake Forest came to Connecticut to play the Bulldogs at The Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport. Jones served as an assistant coach to Villanova’s Jay Wright for the 2007 USA Basketball Men’s Pan American Games Team. He helped tutor Georgetown’s Roy Hibbert, Michigan State’s Drew Neitzel and Indiana’s D.J. White. In 2006, Jones was selected by the USA Basketball Men’s Collegiate Committee, chaired by Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, as a court coach for the 2006 USA Men’s U18 National Team Trials. In addition to his coaching duties, Jones has been active in the New Haven community. Each summer he runs the James Jones Bulldog Basketball Camp. In 2002 he was the recipient of the President’s Award from the Greater New Haven NAACP at its 85th Freedom Fund dinner. As an assistant coach at Yale for two seasons from 1995-97, Jones gained a great understanding of Ivy League basketball.

What Others Say“James Jones is one of the great young coaches in the country. It was an honor to work with him in the Pan Am Games. Our players were inspired by James, and I also learned a lot from working with him.”- Villanova coach Jay Wright

“James has done a great job. People think about him just as a recruiter. But in all honesty, I’ve been more impressed with what he has done with his group. His kids play hard and unselfishly. To do what he did as quickly as he did in the Ivy League is extremely impressive.”- Cornell coach Steve Donahue (Peoria Journal Star)

“James was a great, tireless recruiter. He’d drive all over New York. He’d have it timed to visit a player during his study hall at one high school and then go over and visit another one at another school. He was sincere and connected with them.”- Former Albany coach Doc Sauers (Hartford Courant)

“He’s not a guy to be intimidated. If someone’s going to achieve some-thing, why not him? A lot of people doubt themselves, not him.”- Joe Jones, James’ brother and Columbia head coach (New Haven Register)

“When he left my house, everyone just stared at each other. His visit was unlike that of any other coach. He wasn’t sweet-talking you, he was giving it to you straight. He makes you believe.”- Paul Vitelli ‘04 (New Haven Register)

“We hired James because we feel he’s one of the rising stars in college basketball coaching today.”- Tom Beckett, Yale AD (Connecticut Post)

He returned to Yale as head coach after two years as an assistant coach at Ohio University, where he was primarily responsible for coordinat-ing the Bobcats’ recruiting efforts and developing the post players. In 1998-99 he helped guide Ohio to an 18-10 overall record and a berth in the Mid American Conference Tournament semifinals. At Ohio, he recruited Brandon Hunter, who was a second round pick of the Boston Celtics in the 2002 NBA draft. A Long Island, N.Y., native, Jones served as an assistant basketball coach for five seasons (1990-95) at his alma mater, the University at Albany (N.Y.). In his final two coaching seasons at Albany, he helped lead the team to a 44-11 record and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including reaching the Elite Eight in 1993-94. His primary responsibilities included recruiting, scouting, su-pervising the fall conditioning program and advis-ing team members on academic matters. The team was 93-40 during his five seasons on the bench. Jones graduated from Albany in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and in 1995 earned his master’s in educational administration. As a player at Albany, Jones was captain of the freshman team and was selected as the team’s Freshman of the Year. He played for and coached with the legendary Dr. Richard Sauers, one of only seven collegiate coaches to win more than 700 games. Jones is an active member of several organiza-tions, including the National Association of Bas-ketball Coaches, the New York State Basketball Coaches Association and the Black Coaches As-sociation.

Before entering the coaching profession, Jones served as an exec-utive account manager at NCR Corporation in Albany, N.Y., where he managed a $1.5 million sales territory. James’ younger brother Joe is the head coach at Columbia. The only other time in Ivy League history that two brothers simultane-ously served as head basketball coaches was from 1924 to 1928. Basketball Hall of Famer Ed Wachter was the coach at Harvard while his brother Leonard coached at Dartmouth in the Eastern In-tercollegiate Basketball League, the forerunner of the Ivy League. The Jones brothers are one of two active brother duos coaching at the Division I level. Seth and Brad Greenberg are the head coaches at Virginia Tech and Radford. Research indicates that two brothers coaching within the same conference is extremely rare. The most notable tandem was Clar-ence and Hank Iba, who each coached in the Missouri Valley Con-ference from 1949 to 1957. Clarence was in charge at Tulsa while Hank coached Oklahoma State.

Associate Head CoachCurtis Wilson

STAFF

Curtis Wilson, who was named the associate head coach prior to the start of the 2006-07 season,

is in his 10th year as a member of the Yale staff. He works primarily with Yale’s frontcourt players.

His pupils have included Neil Yanke ‘01, who signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles

Lakers after graduation, Dominick Martin ‘06, a first team All-Ivy selection in 2005-06 who is

currently playing professionally in Spain, and Matt Kyle ‘08, who is playing professionally with

Galitos FC in Barreiro, Portugal.

Wilson has played a key role in the turnaround of the Yale basketball program. In 2001-02, the

Bulldogs won their first Ivy League title since

1962-63 and earned the first postseason tourna-

ment victory in the 107-year history of Yale basketball. The team won 21

games, the second most in the modern era of Yale basketball, and reached

the second round of the National Invitation Tournament. The Bulldogs

have had a .500 or better record in league play in each of the last six years,

which hasn’t happened at Yale since the official start of Ivy play in 1956-

57.

Prior to coming to Yale, Wilson spent five years as an assistant to Tom

Brennan at Vermont. He also was an assistant for three years at Adelphi.

In 1994, Wilson helped guide Adelphi to the Division II ECAC champion-

ship.

A 1991 graduate of Adelphi, Wilson remains fifth all-time on the

Adelphi scoring list with 1,531 career points. A four-time basketball let-

terwinner and co-captain of

the team for three years, he

was a New York City Athletic

Conference All-Star, winner

of the team’s Sportsmanship

Award as a senior and the

Most Valuable Player Award

as a sophomore. Wilson re-

ceived his bachelor’s degree

in business administration and

finance and earned a master’s

degree in sports management from Adelphi in August, 1994. In the spring of

2001, Wilson was inducted into the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame.

He resides in Hamden with his wife, Heather, and daughters Tiffini, Aysia

and Leigha.

STAFF

Matt Kingsley is in his fourth year as a member of James Jones’ staff. He works primarily with the guards. One of his pupils, Eric Fla-to ‘08, graduated second all-time at Yale in three-point field goals made (213) and 13th in school his-tory in scoring (1,193 poins). Prior to coming to Yale, King-sley was the associate head coach at Eastern Connecticut. During his

tenure at Eastern, Kingsley helped the team improve from 7-19 in 2003 to 14-12 in 2004, including a school record eight conference wins. Prior to serving at Eastern Connecticut, Kingsley was a post graduate men’s basketball coach at Saint Thomas More School in Oakdale, Conn. In 2001, he helped coach the team to a 31-3 record and the New England Prep School Class A Championship. He also spent one season as an assistant coach at Clarkson University where the team had the second most wins in school history and earned the first post-season berth in school history. Kingsley is a 1998 graduate of Wesleyan University, where he graduated as the second all-time leading scorer and the school record holder in three-point field goals. Kingsley and his wife Makaela reside in New Haven with their daughter Amelia.

Mark Gilbride, who spent last year as an assistant coach at Stone-hill College, is in his first year on James Jones’ staff. Stonehill won 18 games and reached the semifinals of Northeast-10 Tournament dur-ing his tenure. Gilbride also spent one season at Amherst, helping the Lord Jeffs capture the NCAA Di-vision III national championship,

and three years at his alma mater, Bowdoin. As a player at Bowdoin, Gil-bride was a team captain and start-ing point guard for the Polar Bears. He led the team in assists three sea-sons in a row. A 2002 graduate, he earned a degree in economics. SEASON PREVIEW

2008-09 YALE BASKETBALL 10

OUTLOOK With the graduation of four players who combined to start 256 games and score 2,929 points in their careers, some might think that 2008-09 would be a rebuilding year for the Yale men’s basketball team. Not James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Yale. Jones is confident his team can have a successful season. There is plenty of reason for Jones’s optimism. The Bulldogs return a pair of second team All-Ivy selections in seniors Ross Morin and Travis Pinick and have a number of other talented and experienced players on the roster. “I like this team and our chances to be successful this season,” said Jones, who has guided Yale to a 69-57 record in Ivy League games in his nine years at the helm. “We have a good mix of young and veteran players, and they are working hard to build a positive and productive team atmosphere.” Jones has once again put together a difficult non-conference schedule that begins on Nov. 14 when Stanford becomes the first Pac-10 school to visit the John J. Lee Amphitheater. Other highlights include games with Oregon State, Alabama and New England rivals Holy Cross and Hartford. “Our scheduling philosophy never changes,” Jones said. “We are committed to playing a very challenging non-confer-ence campaign to help prepare our team for the obstacles that we will face in Ivy play.”

Here is a closer look at the 2008-09 Bulldogs:

FRONTCOURT

Morin, the team captain, and Pinick will anchor the Bulldogs’ frontcourt. Morin shot a league-best 64.2 percent from the field in 12 Ivy games last year and was second on the team in scoring (10.2 ppg.) and rebounding (5.4 rpg.). Pinick, perhaps the most versatile and athletic player on the roster, led Yale in rebound-ing (6.7 rpg.), was second in steals (48) and assists (60) and fourth in scoring (7.7 rpg.). In Ivy play, he averaged 8.8 rebounds and had 29 steals, which were both the best in the league. He also is the team’s top defender.

Junior Paul Nelson, who earned all-league honors in the Star Ledger College Summer League, is a strong candidate to start at center. He ap-peared in a career-high 25 games last year, including making his first two starts. Junior Josh Davis saw the most significant action of his career last year as well and could take on a greater role this winter. A pair of sophomores, Garrett Fiddler and Michael Sands, both gained valu-able experience in their rookie years. Sands appeared in 21 games, while Fiddler saw action in 20 contests. Two freshmen will try to step in and contribute. Greg Mangano (Orange, CT) was a two-time all-state selection at nearby Notre Dame-West Haven High School. He averaged 26 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots as a senior. Rhett Anderson (La Canada, CA) is a 2006 graduate of La Canada High School. He finished a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in August. As a senior at La Canada, he averaged 17.8 points and 9.6 rebounds. “We are talented and have great depth in the frontcourt,” Jones said. “I ex-pect Travis and Ross to lead by example. Our size should be our strength and rebounding should be to our advantage.”

OUTLOOKBACKCOURT

The biggest obstacle Yale faces is replacing guard Eric Flato ’08, who graduated sec-ond in school history in three-pointers made (213) and 13th in scoring (1,193 points). Fortunately there are a number of candidates to fill the void. Junior Alex Zampier was one of only two players to appear in all 28 games last year. He tied for second in the Ivy League in steals with 49 and was third on the team in assists (58), fourth in three-pointers (29) and tied for fourth in scoring (7.7 ppg.). Sophomore Porter Braswell, more of a true point guard than Flato, was the recipient of the John C. Cobb Award as Yale’s top freshman. He appeared in all 27 games and averaged 2.9 points. In a home sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth, he averaged 10.5 points and made 9 of 14 shots from the field. Senior Ari Greenberg would be a contender for increased playing time but he is battling an injury. The return of senior Chris Andrews, though, should help bolster the backcourt. Andrews has missed virtually all of the last two seasons with two injuries. One of the highlights of last year came at home against Dartmouth when Andrews made his first appearance since his freshman year and scored his only points when Greenberg passed up a breakaway layup to feed him. Junior Jordan Gibson was one of most improved players on the team last year. After appearing in only nine games as a rookie, he saw action in 25 contests. Against Oberlin, he scored 14 points on 4 of 6 shooting from the field and added four rebounds and two steals. He could also see time at small forward. Sophomore Raffi Mantilla, who was hampered by a thumb injury last year, is an excellent shooter and adds depth to the backcourt. A pair of freshmen hope to make an immediate impact. Brian Katz (Woodbury, NY) was the Long Island Catholic League Player of the Year as a senior at St. Dominic High School after setting the school record for three-point field goals made. Reggie Willhite (Elk Grove, CA) spent a postgraduate year at Phillips Exeter. As a senior at Woodside Priory School in California, he was selected as the Private School Athletic League Most Valuable Player. “We will be young and somewhat inexperienced in the backcourt,” Jones said. “It is important for our perimeter players to step up to the challenge of leading the team and giving us an opportunity to be successful.”
