ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSMASTER’S PROGRAMS

Applicants are normally required to have completed a four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, from the University of Alberta or an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.

An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems based on your most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent) is required.

DOCTORAL PROGRAMS

Applicants are normally required to have completed a master’s degree, or its academic equivalent, from the University of Alberta or an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.

An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems based on your most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent) is required.

DEGREES FROM OUTSIDE CANADA

Since degrees vary greatly from institution to institution and country to country, the University of Alberta will examine course content to establish equivalencies to a UAlberta degree.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

Applicants with qualifications in a degree outside Canada may need to demonstrate English language proficiency by completing an approved English la nguage exam.

Exam Minimum Score (Note: Departments may have higher standards)

TOEFL Test of English as a For-eign Language

Overall score of 90 with at least 21 on each individual skill area (internet-based)

IELTS (Academic) International English Language Testing System

Minimum overall band score of 6.5, with at least 6 on each band (Academic)

CAEL Canadian Academic English Language As-sessment

Overall minimum score of 70, with at least 60 on each subtest

PTE (Academic) Pearson Test of English

Overall minimum score of 61, with a minimum band score of 60 )

WHY APPLY EARLY?Deadlines can vary depending on your program of interest; some deadlines are as early as 12 months before the program begins.

Early applicants are considered for funding; many departments formulate their funding packages between December and March for students starting in September.

International students should apply as early as possible because they will need to apply for a study permit. Study permit processing times vary by country, sometimes taking up to six months.

Note: This is the minimum standard for admission. Some departments may have additional or higher admission qualifications.

C APPLY ONLINEAfter consultation, most departments require you to complete the central graduate studies online application.

The application takes 30-40 minutes to complete. A $100 CAD application fee is required. ualberta.ca/graduate-studies/prospective-students/apply-for-admission

REVIEW REQUIREMENTS AND CONTACT THE DEPARTMENTVisit the department website to review your program’s specific requirements and contact the department if you have questions.

This step is critical because:

• admission requirements vary by program

• application deadlines and entry dates vary by program; some departments accept applications year-round while others only allow entry once a year

• application procedures vary; some programs require you to identify a potential supervisor before applying and some departments may require different documentation at different stages of the application process

ABOUT THE SPONSORED STUDENT PROGRAM

The University of Alberta’s Sponsored Student Program (SSP) is a unit within the University of Alberta International office that offers a specialized, professional service to sponsoring organizations and their students in order to provide an optimal learning experience at our University.

The SSP links sponsoring organizations and their students with a U of A representative, who will serve as the central contact to provide guidance and support during the application and admissions process, when the students arrive, as they progress through their programs, and right through to graduation.

This unique program offers easy and reliable services and ongo-ing communications to sponsors and their students, providing them with any academic, social, and practical assistance they might require. The Sponsored Student Program will begin helping students through the application process as early as one year before they wish to attend. Currently, the U of A works with more than 80 different sponsoring organizations in more than 45 different countries around the world.

WHO ARE SPONSORED STUDENTS?

Sponsored students are international students whose studies are fully or partially funded by their governments, companies, or third party entities. Support can include funding for tuition, fees, and living expenses.

Please note: The SSP does not provide funding to students; our office provides advising support to students who have either already obtained or will be seeking third-party sponsorship funding to attend the University of Alberta
