Introduction

The Wil Hudson Papers (0 .6 m .) consist largely of prin tsamples of commercial work produced by this well-known B .C . fineprinter . These materials were recovered during the final closin gof his print shop in Powell River in September 1991 . Mr . Hudso nhas retired completely from the print trade and has moved t oNelson, B .C . The circumstances of his retirement and the donatio nof these materials are outlined in the brief correspondence fil ewhich leads off the collection .

Wil Hudson has been a noted printer for over 30 years . I nVancouver in the 1960s, he was known successively as Grous eMountain Press, New Age Press, and "Wil Hudson, Printer" . In the1970s at Cape Dorset, NWT, he published with the West Baffi nEskimo Cooperative (and was involved in the creation of the Cap eDorset Eskimo Syllabic type (5-1 .5), "a native language printingtype for . . . use in promoting literal printed communication amon gthe Inuit people") . Finally, he settled in Powell River as acommercial printer until 1991 . He is highly respected by printer sand lovers of fine presswork, "a legend" to younger printers ,noted for his "style and flair" (1-1 .1) .

This collection consists of two formal sample books and avaried range of fugitive samples of Hudson's commercial printing .It contains materials from throughout his career, and is a nimportant addition to our collections of such materials from othe rfine-press printers of B .C ., including Robert Reid, Gerald Giampa ,and Jan and Crispin Elsted . As well, materials documentin gHudson's work with the Alcuin Society supplement our records o fthe Alcuin Society itself : in particular, for the rathe racrimonious Canadian Settler's Guide project, compare the record sin the Alcuin Society Papers, 8-24,25 and 15-1,2,3,4 .

For convenience, files of materials relating directly t oHudson's own places of business are included as the second series .Thereafter, materials have been classified generally according t otype--commercial notices, stationery, invitations, cards, churchnotices, poems, woodcuts, broadsides and covers--with specia lseries for some corporate bodies for which significant quantitie sof materials are present, the Gallery Tantalus (Powell River), th eAlcuin Society, and UBC .

The collection includes also a copy of A Compendium o fHistoric Canadiana, four facsimiles of historic documents i nhistorically appropriate folders, with explanatory cover sheet .This has been catalogued for the library's pamphlet collection ,with a note linking it with the Wil Hudson Papers (SPAM

) .Similarly, complete copies of some of the periodicals in Series 1 0have also been moved to the pamphlet collection .
