INTRODUCTION
The Literary Storefront was established in Vancouver, B.C. in 1978 as a kind of drop-in centre for West Coast and Cana ian literati, It modelled in spirit after other venues such as: Ferlinghetti's City Lights bookshog in San Francisco, Shakespeare & Co. in Paris, France, and the Gotham Book Mart in ew York City. The Literary Storefront {the LSFl sought to provide a similar environment where readers could meet and talk about their ork in an infor and attend readings by writers from around the world,
Under the direction first of Mona Fertig, its founder, then later Tom Ilves and Wayne Holder, the Literary Storefront in ad ition to the readings, held workshops, lent books, offered courses and manuscript assessment services. It published the work of local writers in several

Fonds description Literary Storefront fonds 1978-1993. 40 cm of textual material and other materials. Administrative history/Biographical sketch: Full biographical sketch provided in the inventory of the Literary Storefront’s initial donation to which the present records constitute an accrual. Scope and content: Fonds consists of correspondences, post cards, letters, minutes of the Literary Storefront’s annual general meetings, newspaper clippings, sound recordings, photographs, negatives and other materials which document the activities of the Literary Storefront as a support network for local, national and international writers. The fonds is arranged into the following five series: General Administration (1978-1993); Correspondences (1978-1982); Sound Recordings (1978-1981); and Photographs (1978-198-). For other relevant records please see earlier finding aids from previous accrual. Source of title proper: Title based on the provenance of the fonds. Physical description note: Fonds includes 40 cm of textual records, 133 audio cassettes, 61 photographs, 3 audio reels and 1 photograph album. Immediate source of acquisition note: Accrual was transferred by Mona Fertig, the first director of the Literary Storefront, to Rare Books and Special Collections in 2008.

Scope and content: Series consists of records related to the general operations and administrative activities of the Literary Storefront and includes the following: supply lists, general receipts, phone bills, minutes of the literary store front annual general meetings, advertisements, events calendars, miscellaneous correspondence, notes, newspaper clippings related to the activities of the literary storefront, posters, flyers, membership receipts and membership cards. For other relevant records please see earlier finding aids from previous accrual. Source of title proper: Title based on the content of the series. Correspondence 1978-1982 20 cm of textual records. Scope and content: Series consists of copies of outgoing correspondence as well as incoming letters, post cards and cards from members of the Literary Storefront, prominent Canadian poets, Canadian Publishers (such as Brunswick Press, Douglas and McIntrye, and the Association of Book Publishers of British Columbia,), the Writers Union of Canada, local schools, colleges and libraries (such as St. George School, Vancouver Community College, and the Fraser Valley Regional Library). For other relevant records please see earlier finding aids from previous accrual. Source of title proper: Title based on the content of the series. Sound recordings 1978-1981. 133 audio cassettes. 3 film reels. Scope and content: Series consists of taped readings, concerts and interviews with numerous prominent local, national and international writers and musicians such as Margaret Atwood, Jack Hodgins, Ted Hughes, Joy Kogawa, Dorothy Livesay, Sylvia Plath, Peter Trower, and many others. Photographs 1978-198- 61 photographs. 1 photo album. Scope and content: Series consists of black and white, colour photographs, negatives and one photograph album depicting various events which took place at the Literary Storefront, including renovations, poetry readings, parties and other social gatherings.
