EXCITING RECORD BOOK CHANGES for 2013-2014

Exciting Record Book Changes Have Arrived Starting With This New 4-H Program Year 2013-2014!

I am happy to announce that we have made BIG changes to the way county 4-H Members complete their annual record book. There will now be just three (3) record books forms that will be used: the Personal Development Report (PDR), Annual Project Report Form (APR) and the Junior/Teen Leadership Development Report form. These three (3) forms are all currently available on the SLO County 4-H website, 4-H State Website and the Online Record Book site. Those of you who are interested will be able to work on and update your forms throughout the 4-H program year via the 4-H Online Record Book. And for those of you who do not wish to use the Online Record Book you will still be able to complete these three forms either on your computer or by hand. You will no longer be asked to complete a 4-H Story. However, IF you wish to have your record book considered for County Medal Judging then you would be required to complete a 4-H PROJECT STORY for your pro-jects you are sending to County for review. There will be several Record Book Trainings held this coming year — for not only 4-H Club Leaders and Project Leaders but for members and their families.

Be on the lookout for the dates – coming to an area near you!

As always feel free to contact me in the evenings at 528-8232 with any record book questions.

1,000 Trees Project Update — UC Davis SLC 2013

A group of 125 youth delegates and 25 adults from the Student Leadership Conference got together on July 26 at Covell Park near the UC Davis campus as a part of the 1,000 Trees Project and the Revolution of Responsibility project run by State Ambassador Michelle Wong. A representative from Tree Davis came to talk to us that day about the benefits of having trees in the City of Davis which included cleaner air, shade from the heat and stopping water erosion. We also heard from the Urban Forest Director at UC Davis and the benefits of having trees at UC Davis. We learned that the part of the tree just above the ground called the cuticle was the most sensitive part of the tree and needed to be protected, and that is why you see plastic protectors at the ground level to protect this part of the tree. We did not plant new trees because the survival rate of a new tree sometimes is not so good, so we took care of the young trees at Covell Park to give them a better chance for survival into the next 10 years. We cleared grass from the bases of 50 trees and mulched them and watered them. A group of us involved with this project plan to visit Covell Park again and see how the trees we cared for are doing! If you get a chance, make a difference, plant a tree!

    Going to National!

4-H brings kids together! While I presented my interpretive reading at State Field Day in Sacramento, I participated in the Horticultural Identification, Judging, and Knowledge Contest. At the awards ceremony that evening I was shocked to learn that I received 2nd place in the senior division! That meant I qualified to be on the California 4-H Horticulture Team. I was excited!

Our California 4-H team is composed of 4 members from different counties. We will be competing for the National Title in the annual National Junior Horticultural Association (NJHA) convention this

October in Williamsburg, Virginia. In addition there will be six other delegates going, including my brother David, who will be on the open California team. We have been having study sessions together, and learning on our own, in order to prepare for this big event. We are eagerly anticipating meeting other 4-Hers from across the country in Virginia! NEW! COUNTYWIDE EMERALD STAR PROJECT for 2013-2014

We have a new Emerald Star Project that involves monthly Community Service opportunities for all 4-H Members within San Luis Obispo County. The Emerald Star Project Theme is: “Treats for Our Troops” Here on the Central Coast we have several military installations; Vandenberg Air Force Base, Camp San Luis, Camp Roberts and a Coast Guard unit. It makes sense then that we have plenty of families in this county that have loved ones serving in these forces. At this time, we have a former San Luis Obispo County 4-H member who was also an executive officer for many years serving in Afghanistan with the Army 9th Cavalry Regi-ment, a group of approximately 90 men. It is 102 degrees over there right now and in

October the cafeteria unit will be closing up as we prepare to slowly withdraw from this part of the country. This means that the troops will only be eating MREs or meals-ready-to-eat. In an effort to help make these servicemen’s and servicewomen’s lives more comfortable, we are collecting items to make their lives better while they work far away from family and home by sending them monthly care packages. For the month of October we are collecting letters and cards for the holidays—Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. It takes up to four weeks for these things to get to Afghanistan so we will be mailing this package on the 1st of November. These are some rules for preparing these letters; 1.) You can address them Dear Soldier, 2.) You can sign your first name and say what area you are from, but no addresses, 3.) You may give positive encour-agement, 4.) You may send pictures of yourself and/or your 4-H projects. The letters are to be placed in an unsealed envelope because they are screened before they are given to the troops, any sealed letters will be tossed. There will be a box placed at the County 4H office for you to drop off your cards and letters. Please package them together with your 4-H Club name on the package. We hope that every member in San Luis Obispo County will take a moment to participate in this monthly Emerald Star activity. We will send out a list of items each month to help you shop efficiently and so that we do not over buy some items and not enough of others.

If you have any questions regarding this project please contact the 4-H Office. We thank Huasna Valley 4-H for their first contribution to this project! Thank you for your generosity!
