Do you enjoy the outdoors, camping and children? Then
you are a prime candidate for this year’s 4-H summer
camp. Adults (especially MEN) are needed to help serve

have enough adult help signed up by April 4, 2011,
camp will be canceled. Adults helping are required to
attend two of six planning meetings. The next scheduled

Orland. Camp provides opportunities for the teens as
camp counselors to plan and implement the activities.
All youth are invited to participate as campers (K - 8th
grades). Please consider helping with this year’s camp.

Helpful Hints & Changes
For Your Buyers’ Letters Each 4-H member that plans to sell an animal
through the Jr. Livestock Auction at the Glenn Coun-
ty Fair is to send out buyer’s letters to prospective
buyers. The prospective buyers can range from your
local feed store, veterinarian, grocery store, dentist,
doctor, orthodontist, car/tractor dealerships, auto
parts store, personal friend, parents’ place of work,
etc. It can be anyone that you or your family knows
or does business with. Be creative, the goal is to
bring new buyers to the auction each year.
You can also mention in your letter that another op-
tion is donating to price support. What is price sup-
port? This is where people have donated money to go
to members whose sale price has been low and it
helps to support them and bring up the amount that
they will receive. A person could donate any amount
for price support. This can also be done in the name
of a specific member or specie. If you are interested
in this, please contact Jody Samons at 865-1107.
Another option is a buyers’ group. The purpose of the
group is to bid/purchase animals that are not getting
any bids. The money is collected ahead of time and is
not earmarked for any specific child. It goes to where
the most need is. If this is something that you might
be interested in doing, you may contact any of the
following buyers’ groups:
Glenn County Fair Buyers’ Group
Irene Skala 865-9229
Clover Buyers’ Group
Phil McCorkle 934-3531
Stonyford Buyers’ Group
Kim Richardson 963-3200
Gary Evans 963-3333
Tim Leach 963-3197
You can explain in your letters that buyers do not
have to purchase a whole animal, they may go in with
one or more other people. Perhaps they are not inter-
ested in butchering the animal, but would like to help
support the program. There is an option of resale
available. What is resale? This is where the animal is
purchased by a buyer, but at the time of purchase, if
they note that they want the animal to go for resale,
the buyer will be given market price for that specific
animal and then the resale amount will be deducted
from the amount that your buyer will have to pay for
the animal.

lege next year, carrying 12 or more units. The scholar-
ship is available to high school seniors with a GPA of
2.5 or higher. Applications must be received by March

Memorial Scholarship Fund
Did you know that each year the Glenn County 4-H
Council awards several scholarships to graduating sen-
iors? This is done in part by donations that the Council
receives from organizations, personal gifts and in
memory of a lost one. If you would like more infor-
mation on our scholarship fund, please contact the 4-H
Office.
Market Animal Report
Remember, the Market
Animal Report Form
needs to be filled out on
the front side at the be-
ginning of the year
(now) and signed by the
member, a parent and
the project leader. The
back page is to be completed and turned in with your
fair entry form. At that time, the form needs to be signed
by the member, a parent, project leader and the key
leader. You will not be able to exhibit at the fair if this
form is not completed (including all signatures).
All Market Animals Entered In The
Fair Must Have A Bill Of Sale
This year, the Department of Food and Agriculture will
be enforcing this policy. At the time you enter your mar-
ket animals, you must attach a
bill of sale for each animal to
your entry form. If you have
questions, please contact the 4-
H Office or Glenn County Fair
Office at 865-1168.

the Cal-Farm Insurance Office at 865-3801.
Animal Ethics Training
Each 4-H member who is planning
to sell at the 2011 Jr. Livestock

ments listed on the Market Animal
Report. One of those requirements
is to attend an animal ethics train-
ing every year. Check with your project leader to see if
you have met this requirement.
Record Book Project Awards
All 4-H members must submit a record book at the end
of the year in order to receive a year

ify can then submit their record books
on to county judging. Special awards
can be won (even primary members
can join in this experience!). Record books will be

Reminder To 4-H Leaders
Leaders who have not yet been finger-
printed or have not been orientated as a
leader cannot conduct meetings until
this has been done. There is a finger-
print form that you will need to take
with you when you get fingerprinted.
You can pick this form up at the 4-H Office. If you have
not been orientated, please call your Key Leader or
Deanna Rogers to set up an appointment, or if you have
any questions, you can call the 4-H Office at 865-1107.
4-H Online Donating Now Available
Online donations can now be designated to counties or
programs and paid with a credit card. Please check out
the new California 4-H website (www.ca4h.org). On
every page you will notice a large
blue ―Donate Now‖ button which will
direct donors to the Foundation dona-
tion web page. Online donations can
be designated to go to specific coun-
ties or to specific programs and may
be paid by credit card. 100% of the amount pledged
goes directly to the program or county designated. Do-
nors also have the option of making recurring pledges
and unrestricted donations to be used where the need is
greatest.
Volunteer Leader Website
The volunteer leader website is a new interactive and
growing site that can be seen at http://ucanr.org/4-
hvolunteers/. There are sections that will change month-
ly, a 4-H Blog, 4-H Volunteer
Voices, and updates in the pro-
gram. We hope you'll enjoy
seeing all the resources you
need in one centralized loca-
tion. In order to build this new
section of the website, please
send any recent stories of 4-H in the news in your com-
munity that you would like to share. You can email the-
se stories to: [email protected].
Transportation Reminder
Volunteers who drive during a 4-H
event should remember that their au-
tomobile insurance coverage is pri-
mary and the university’s insurance
coverage is secondary. Arrangements
for transportation of youth to 4-H
events are the responsibility of the
parents. County 4-H staff doesn’t provide permission
slips allowing members to ride with 4-H leaders or par-
ents.
CWA Scholarships
This year the Northern Sacramento Valley Chapter of
the California Women for Agriculture is sponsoring
four scholarships of $500 each for graduating high
school seniors who are interested in the field of agricul-
ture. Both full time and part time students of either gen-
der will be considered. Neither your grade point average
nor your financial need will be a significant factor.
Deadline is April 15, 2011. If you have any questions,
please contact Carol Bertagna as soon as possible: (530)
343-1623.

Glenn County Fair
Buyers’ Group Submitted by Irene Skala Each year approximately 350 of Glenn County’s
youth participate in the Glenn County Fair and
Auction, exhibiting and selling the livestock they
have raised through local 4-H and FFA pro-
grams. Taking on these projects is a large re-
sponsibility which requires an extraordinary
amount of time. The lessons they learn are price-
less and will be carried with them throughout
life. They learn personal skills such as work eth-
ic and time management; and specific lessons
about the importance of nutrition and exercise,
as well as, basic caring and grooming of an ani-
mal. The effort these children put forth is re-
warded monetarily through the Junior Livestock
Auction. They use the money for a wide range of
things: school supplies, clothes, cars, next year’s
project, and college. In 2002, in an effort to sup-
port this positive youth activity, four local busi-
nesses established a buyers’ group. The Group’s
sole purpose is to financially support youth sell-
ing animals through the Glenn County Fair Jun-
ior Livestock Auction. The Buyers’ Group con-
tinues to grow and support many local youth
through the purchase of their livestock projects.
The dollars contributed will be used to purchase
4-H and/or FFA ―no bid‖ animals, or for general
price support. A―no bid‖ animal is a sale animal
that fails to have an opening bid and any follow
up bid. The Group will open the bid and pur-
chase the animal if no subsequent bid is taken.
Once the sale is concluded, any remaining funds
will be used as price supports to raise any below
average sale prices. We invite you to attend the
auction and witness the successful completion of
these livestock projects by our county’s young
people. The Glenn County Junior Livestock
Auction is May 21, 2011. If you, or someone
you know, would like to contribute to the Glenn
County Fair Buyers’ Group, it would be greatly
appreciated. A separate account, maintained by
the Glenn County Fair, has been established for
your generous contributions. For more infor-
mation regarding this wonderful cause, you may
contact Committee Chairperson Irene Skala at
(530) 865-9229. Thank you for your time and
consideration.

Plaza 4-H Club
Submitted by Jared Poldervaart, Reporter The Plaza 4-H group held their last meeting on Wednes-day, March 2, at 7:00 p.m. After roll call and the Treas-urer’s Report, we congratulated everyone on a job well done on all of the presentations given on presentation night. We also made sure to tell everyone that if they missed County Presentation Day that they would have to attend Tehama County Presentation Day on Saturday, March 5. This was also the date of the Glenn County 4-H Dinner in Willows. Everyone was reminded to bring cookies for dessert and a cake for the Cake Wheel. The Plaza group is in charge of hosting the cake wheel at the dinner. We still needed to fill up two spots on our volun-teer sign-up sheet. All parents were asked to look at the sheet and volunteer their time if they could. All mem-bers and leaders were also reminded of all of the re-quirements they need in order to sell an animal at the fair. We also discussed 4-H camp dates for applica-tions. After the meeting was concluded we all enjoyed cookies and punch brought by some of our very gener-ous families and members. Thank you for a great meet-ing once again.

4-H Hat Information Achievement pins are fastened to the service stripes, starting with the first-year pin next to the 4
-H clover. The All-Star pin should be fastened to the center of the All-Star emblem. Medals may
be worn on either side of the cap, but not too many of them. No other pins or ribbons should be
worn on the cap. The cap should reflect the dignity of 4-H Club work, and not be cheapened by
fastening to it
every emblem,
award, and ribbon
won by the wear-
er. Keep your cap
clean, especially
when you wear it
with the full uni-
