Mission Statement The Gatton Student Center strives to serve as a “living room” for the campus through providing facilities, services, conveniences, and programs for the University community which enhance their daily lives on campus and afford them the opportunity to learn, know, and understand one another through informal association outside the formal classroom.

Building community, celebrating diversity, and engaging all members of the University is vital to our success. The student is central to this mission, as the department serves as a laboratory for teaching students leadership strategies and human relation skills through work experience, involvement in student organizations, and experience in program development through execution.

MISSION STATEMENT | 3

Guiding Principals of the Gatton Student Center Academic Environment- The Student Center must support the intentional programming, organic interactions and services for registered student organizations, academic departments and the community. Every space advances the mission, vision, and values of the Student Center as a community builder. Focused on undergraduate and graduate student life, the Student Center will support the needs of the entire campus community through programs and services that support the academic mission of the University.

Safe Environment- To provide the highest quality of staff training and facilities that ensure a safe inclusive and sustainable environment. The Student Center will host a vibrant environment that will be accessible to all members of the community seven days a week, including holidays, from early morning to late evening.

Service- To provide the maximum attention to our campus community and visitors. This facil-ity will leverage the passion and creativity of the student and professional staff through space utiliza-tion, and technology / programming which enhance the campus community experience. Every visitor should feel the facility and service were prepared for their visit, no matter what time of day or night they arrived.

Flexibility- The intentional structure of the transformed facility will afford the opportunity to adapt spaces for planned programming, collaborations and organic relationships. This student centered facility will provide continuous support that compliments the daily life of a student seven days a week from early morning to late evening.

Diversity and Inclusivity- To provide the highest quality of programming and leisure activities that enhance the student experience and sense of belonging. Holistic student development, leadership, academic and social progress and inclusivity will start at the Gatton Student Center. This will be an environment where persons of every background and culture are embraced and become part of the fabric of The UK community life.

Student Employment Experience- Supported by skilled professionals, the Student Center is a student run facility where students receive first-hand experience in leadership, programming, management, social justice/responsibility, and interpersonal skills. The student employment experience will empower students to have a positive impact on the University and a global society by providing opportunities for student success through staff culture, student development, personal growth and the cultivation of real world skills.

Brand- To provide a facility that is open and welcoming to the community and all visitors. Our work will constantly be focused on raising the bar to better serve students, intentionally developing outcome based programs and becoming experts in our area.

Collaboration- To develop and execute activities in the Student Center through in-houseprogramming and collaboration with academic departments, student organizations and the community responding to the changing needs of students, other constituents, and evolving institutional priorities. Address the needs of a diverse population by providing a place where student organizations can engage in activities that promote intercultural exchanges and a nurturing environment where commonalities and differences are recognized and celebrated.

Introduction It is with great pleasure the UK Gatton Student Center submits this annual report noting some of the activities and accomplishments of the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

It was with great pride that we opened the Gatton Student Center after being decommissioned for three years. Champions Kitchen Dining Area opened in January of 2018. The central spaces including the UK Bookstore and Café, the large atrium and social staircase opened during finals week of the 2018 Spring Academic Term, and the final west facing spaces including Alumni Gym, student and staff office spaces, the Worsham Cinema, Senate Chamber and the historic Great Hall opened in mid-June of 2018.

On April 30, 2019, the Board of Trustees approved the final “fit-up” renovation of the Harris Ballroom. The money, in the amount of $5,000,000, was accrued in the Student Center Reserve Fund. The construction documents were completed and it is anticipated a pre-bid meeting will be held July 2nd with RFP, bids and construction to follow quickly after that. This will leave only the Blue Box Theater as “shell space” to be completed as soon as funding becomes available.

I am most proud of the dedication and professionalism of the staff at the Gatton Student Center. The staff is very seasoned, experienced and unique in their areas of specialization, yet energetic and willing to experiment with new initiatives. Moving back into the Gatton Student Center has been a proud moment for all of us. Due to the staff diligence most areas have functioned like clockwork from receiving area and loading dock, to back of house operations, to set-ups and space functionality, to the nationally recognized quality programs in the Cats Den and Cinema. We have added an Associate Director for Guest Services, Quality Improvement, and Professional Development supervising all student management and student employees also handling tours and hospitality, and advanced to Associate Director Security and Operations which handles secure access as well as emergency preparedness. As we enter the new fiscal year the final Associate Director position was hired for the Activities, Marketing and Data Analysis area. That completes the full senior management team for the Gatton Student Center. Once again our students continue to “raise the bar” for exceptional Cinematic Arts and live entertainment. There are quality events taking place in the Gatton Student Center every night of the week during the regular academic terms. All events are free and open to everyone. We continue to embrace building a community ofbelonging.

We believe in the philosophy that people tend to support those things they have a hand in creating. With the intentional collaboration and the technical skills and agility of the professional and student staff, the Gatton Student Center continues to make memorable presentations of University-wide events.

I am pleased to report that the Gatton Student Center received the 2019 ACUI Award for Design Excellence. We have further been nominated for National Awards for Interior Design and Advance Technology for a learning environment. From Commencement Ceremonies in December and May, to a top national ranking in Cinematic Arts, the Gatton Student Center makes an impact on student life at UK. All of this is made possible through the dedicated and caring attitude of an amazing Student Center staff. To each of our staff, both student and professional, I extend a gracious “Thank You.” Each member of this team contributes to make this a wonderful place to be, to live, and to work.

This is the final Annual Report I will submit, as my retirement becomes effective on July 4th. It is with great pride and humility that I had the pleasure to serve this Great University for 45 years. I look forward to watching the remarkable future of the Gatton Student Center!

INTRODUCTION | 5

Facility and OperationsBUDGET OVERVIEW Operating as an auxiliary enterprise, the Gatton Student Center is funded by fees assessed to full and part-time students as well as contract and lease of space payments. Student fees comprise over 75% of the total operating budget. The Student Center is a self-sufficient enterprise. The facility pays its own salaries, benefits, utilities, repairs, maintenance, custodial equipment and supplies, current op-erating expenses, debt service, as well as deferred maintenance and any major or minor renovations or aesthetic improvements through the annual budget.

REVENUE GENERATION A vital source of revenue generation for the Student Center stems from leasing agreements and room rental, with space leased to Kaplan Test Prep, the UK Federal Credit Union, PNC Bank and 24-Hour ATMs producing approximately $123,000 of income during the 2018-2019 fiscal year. All external leases of space are handled by Request for Proposal (RFP) procedures through the Purchasing Division to ensure compliance with state law. Room usage generated an additional $180,000 in room rental while Production Services generated over $180,000 in revenue through providing skilled technical ser-vices at various venues on campus, and many locations off campus.

Our campus partners lease of space operations generated $2,070,000 to offset Student Center debt service and general operating costs.

EVENT SETUP STAFF In 2019, the Gatton Student Center employed three full-time and five temporary event setup staff along with seven student staff. They perform event setup in the Gatton Student Center meeting spaces according to the specification of the University Events Office, and they support building safety and security. Members of the crew are available seven days a week, nearly every hour of building oper-ation. Event setup crewmembers are well trained, highly skilled, and have significant longevity. As the Gatton Student Center’s first point of contact with many patrons, event setup team members have the vital role of being customer service agents for the Student Center.

BOOKING EVENTS In 2019, the Gatton Student Center had an incredible 6,822 bookings across its 46 reservable spaces for a total attendance of over 410,000 patrons. As the Gatton Student Center continues to be a prominent space in the heart of campus, we expect these numbers to continue to grow.

Hospitality An energetic and vibrant hub of the University of Kentucky Campus since 1938. From the wide range of dining options to our entertainment and educational opportunities there’s a team that makes everything possible: the Hospitality Department. Our department is compiled of over 75 student employees that oversee the buzzing activity that happens on a daily basis. Through our customer service, we strive for four simple goals that achieve a greater sense of hospitality for all patrons alike:

Professionalism Meeting expectations of professionalism means excelling in behavior, communication, and presentation.

Asking & Answering Questions Making patrons feel welcomed and comfortable in our building by taking the initiative to ask and answer questions regarding our building, university, city, and anything in between.

Welcoming Guests Providing high-quality customer service by cultivating a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that ensures our visitors return.

Smiling and Sending off Ensuring patrons are comfortable navigating the building following interaction with our service representatives.

At the Gatton Student Center, our ultimate goal is to serve as the campus living room - a home away from home. Through our excellent customer service and hospitality, we serve as a memorable face for the University of Kentucky. The communal feel of our student union can only be upheld by the student support that makes up our Hospitality staff.

With a new building on campus, it is common for patrons to request tours of our facilities, spaces, and services. These patrons can range from current students, alumni, members of the community, or prospective students & employees. Unlike other university unions, our tours are tailored to personal preferences of the patrons and given by a selective staff of student hosts coordinated by a student manager. Not only do these students receive significant experience in hospitality and public speaking, but our managers gain experience overseeing the operational aspect of campus and facility tours.

Tours may be provided on demand at any point of the day located at the Information 1 Desk above the Social Staircase or by appointment at [email protected]. If special accommodations are needed, our host staff are easily adaptable and willing to adjust tour time, facilities viewed, or routes taken.

HospitalityProfessional/Personal Enhancement Program (PEP)

Our goal is to prepare our student employees to meet the standards of a contemporary global workplace environment by providing the necessary resources and opportunities to our student employees in order to promote their success after they experience success at the University of Kentucky.

PEP is required of all student employees. The program will last two years with four events per semester. In order to complete mandatory PEP requirements, students must finish all 16 events in two years.

The Gatton Student Center will provide student employees with a monthly calendar of eligible PEP events. Students may fill out an event request form (via Google Forms) for approval on events not listed on the aforementioned calendar. Event request forms should be submitted prior to event attendance to receive approval. Event request forms turned in after event attendance may or may not be PEP eligible, and therefore may be denied. If an event request is denied, neither PEP credit nor payment will be issued.

The Gatton Student Center requires student employees to complete a journal for each event. All journal entries will be submitted via Google Forms. Each entry must be 300-500 words. The journal ensures student reflection on learning and allows the PEP Committee to determine which events are valuable.

Gatton Student Center Programming Located on Level 1 of the Gatton Student Center, the CATS DEN is the premier recreational space for activities on campus, providing FREE nightly entertainment to students throughout the week.

From long-time staples such as stand-up comedy, open mic nights, trivia nights, and concerts to collaborative programs What’s Cookin’ and Word is Born, the Cats Den offers free events to fit a variety of interests.

The Cats Den Concert Series brings up-and-coming artists, supports local musicians andshowcases acts of national prominence to create a line-up that appeals to a variety of musical tastes, and continues to increase its attendance and quality with each subsequent semester.

Comedy Caravan is the longest continuous running program in the Cats Den and features nationally known comedians taking the stage free of charge to students.

The Cats Den offers a variety of competitive events as well: with tournaments such as TexasHold’em, Spades, weekly trivia nights, and 9-Ball billiards.

The Student Center Director’s Office continues to provide a $250 subsidy for registered student organizations that wish to host an event in the Cats Den on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the semester. During the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 Semester, the Cats Den hosted 19 subsidy events from registered clubs and organizations.

Gatton Student Center Programming The Gatton Student Center Cinema furthered its mission to provide the University of Kentucky campus community with a unique and quality cinematic experience. The sub-series, which feature lesser-known and often artistic and academic films, included acclaimed documentaries and award-winning international hits. Collaborative screenings featured the Martin Luther King Center, the Office of LGBTQ* Resources, the UK Counseling Center, the English Department, and many more. With the move back to the Student Center and into the state-of-the-art Worsham Cinema the program appears poised to grow its audience, co-curricular reach, and programming efforts. In the interest of preserving the historic “Late Night Film Series” title, Student Center Cinema will continue to program films at 10PM on Friday nights under the moniker. Late Night will highlight cult classic and off-kilter fare, harkening back to the early days of the series.

Assessment The Gatton Student Center is committed to making operations, programming, and student employment decisions based on strategic, institutional, and departmental goals and standards. To hold accountable to this culture of evidence-based decision making, the Gatton Student Center has created a comprehensive assessment plan that reflects the mission and values of the strategic plan.

In its daily operations, the Gatton Student Center strives to meet the objectives of the following department goals:

1. Prepare students for leading roles in an innovative-driven economy and global society.2. Promote research and creative work in the Gatton Student Center.3. Develop human and physical resources to provide students with a co-curricular experience reflective of a Top-20 public University. 4. Promote diversity and inclusion.5. Improve the quality of life of Kentuckians through engagement, outreach, and service.

All student employees are trained and supervised in a way that supports the following Student Employment Learning Outcomes:

- Students will demonstrate strong event management skills including the use of resources, setting priorities, risk management, technical support, and security.

- Students will engage in international interactions with people who are different from themselves and develop an understanding of one’s own identity and culture.

- Students will demonstrate application of critical thinking processes in making decisions and solving problems.

- Students will execute programs and tasks that require collaboration with other students, faculty, staff and departments.

- Students will articulate what they have learned and demonstrate the ability to translate skills and abilities gained which can be used in multiple areas of their lives.
