English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU)

The English Language Teaching Unit offers a wide

range of English Language and Study Skills

courses to students who are studying at, or who

want to study at, the University of Leicester.

The University of Leicester offers exciting summer schools aimed at improving English levels and giving an introduction to life in the UK. All courses are open to all aged 18 or over with a minimum IELTS of 4.0, or equivalent.

*English for Medics Summer School

A three week course aimed at medical students and professionals, designed to improve both general and medical-specific English.

The English for Medics Summer School is ideal for medical students and health professionals who want to improve their English for use in a hospital or medical setting. The course has now been running for ten years.

1. ARRIVAL DAY:

On Sunday 6th of August, 2016, students from Pharos University- accompanied by their

teacher- arrived at the Opal Court in Leicester city where they were received by Aarone

Wise, the course coordinator. The group was transferred from London to Leicester by a

van provided by the administration of the University of Leicester. Upon arrival, students

were given our keys to the rooms in the Opal Court; Block A. Female students were

located on the third and fourth floors, while the males were on the fifth floor.

2. ACCOMMODATION:

Each student was given a separate bedroom key

asall of the rooms were single bedrooms.

Therooms included a bed, a bathroom, a desk

and a wardrobe.

However, every 5 rooms shared akitchen where the students used to gather up during

breakfast, lunch or dinner.

3. THE FIRST DAY OF THE COURSE:

Pharos University students were accompanied by members of the English Language

Teaching Unit to attend an orientation session and hand them in their IDs, Leicester

University emails, course materials and T-shirts.

The course started on August 8th, 2016 with a 40-minute written placement test to place

students into their appropriate language proficiency levels. The test consisted of 80 multiple-

choice items, testing grammatical and lexical items, where students had to shade the correct

answer in their answer sheets.

This placement test took around 40-45 minutes. All of the students were able to complete the

whole exam on time.

The results of the placement test were announced on the following day of the course and

accordingly students were placed in three different classes along with their Japanese peers.

4. Week 1 [8-12 August 2016],

Week 2 [15-19 August 2016]

Week 3 [22-26 August 2016]

Healthcare in the UK: 9.30 – 11.00

for example; palliative care, cancer, dementia, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Patient Consultation: 11:30 – 13:00

Research, Lectures, and Visits: 14.00 – 16.00

Social Events: Evening (optional)

5. Classes:

Attending all classes was obligatory for all students. Classes started at 9:30 to 4:00 from

Monday till Thursday. Fridays and Saturdays were mainly for excursions.

Plantagenet: Shahd Hassan, Jailan Salman, Rowan Emad, FarahMahfouz

Windsor: Amr Mohamed, Fares Rafaat, MennaAllah Khaled

Tudors: Raghda Moursi, Sherwit Fouad, Dana Ahmed

6. Course Description

This intensive course primarily focuses on language used in medical contexts. Participants will be provided with opportunities to use new medical vocabulary and structures in different contexts such as with a patient or consulting with fellow health professionals. Areas covered during the course include:

The UK health system Health issues in the UK Taking a patient history Giving a physical examination Diagnostic and treatment procedures Development of research and presentation skills Cultural and social aspects of English usage Visits to medical services in the Leicester area

7. THE STAFF: PUA students and their fellow Japanese

8. UNIVERSITY FACILITIES: -The Danielle Brown Sports Centre: anideal location to take a quick break from studies or

work and either swim, play, relax or work-out in high class facilities.

9. WEEKLY EXCURSIONS: Week One:

*Day Trip: Location: Oxford Town and UniversityDate: Friday 12/08

-Tour famous colleges at Oxford University -Take a punt along the river -Visit the world’s first university museum: the Ashmolean *Day Trip: Location: Stratford-upon-Avon Date: Saturday 13/08

- Visit the place of Birth of English writer William Shakespeare.

- Attend a play “Hamlet” for Shakespeare at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre

Week Two: *Day Trip: Location: The Cotswolds Date: Friday 19/08 -Tour through the southern English countryside - Visit quaint medieval villages *Day Trip: Location: York Date: Saturday 20/08

10. OTHER EVENTS:

* Movie Night During the third week, studentshad a “movie night” on a Tuesday evening. The students were asked to watch the movie “Shakespeare in Love” about the life of the famous English writer and poet William Shakespeare and take part in a discussion after watching it.

*Career development session

Rob Crane, Business Manager of ELTU organised a Career development session for those

who are interested in this future career improvement. He answered students’ questions related

to how to enter UK universities/language programme and those who have an ambition to be a

doctor/dentist/business manager, etc.

12. VISITS:

I.Victoria Park Medical Centre Visit Students met leading Cardiologist Professor

Toru Suzuki from the University of Leicester's

Department of Cardiovascular Sciences. They

had a wide discussion on the modern

developments in the field of medicine and the

characteristics of a successful doctor in the UK

and around the world.

II. Laros Hospice Visit

Hospicecare is a type of care and philosophy of

care that focuses on the palliation of a

chronically ill, terminally ill or seriously ill

patient's pain and symptoms, and attending to

their emotional and spiritual needs.

13. MEETING WITH DENTIST:

University of Leicester offered PUA students an exceptional opportunity to meet with

the famous Iraqi dentist Dr./Noha Baldawi, who has had her master’s degree and PhD in

the United Kingdom and has been working as a dentist in Leicester for 16 years. PUA

students asked her a lot of questions about the qualifications and skills they need in

order to become outstanding in their field, and she gave them some valuable tips for

their career development.

14. DEPARTURE:

On August 27th, 2016 we handed in our chamber keys to the Accommodation Office at

the Opal Court at 2:30 pm to get on the coach at 3:00 that drove us Heathrow Airport.

We arrived there at 5:00 and our flight back to Egypt was at 10:15 pm.
