athletes, including all freshmen in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball andvolleyball. Students who participated in theclass earned an average of 15.4 credit hours, and an average GPA of 3.045.

Three academic programs are spon-sored by the CAAS as a means of honoringthe top student-athletes at The U of M. TheTiger 3.0 Club recognizes student-athleteswho earn grade point averages of 3.0 duringthe fall/spring semesters, while the TigerAcademic Thirty is dedicated to the 30 stu-dent-athletes with the best grade point aver-age on each team, and then the next bestgroup of athletes, totaling 30 athletes. Thefinal honor, the TEAM GPA Award, is pre-sented to the male and female team with thebest grade point average for the semester.

With a qualified and dedicated staff inplace, and a new spacious work area dedi-cated entirely to all Tiger student-athletes,Dr. Luckey expects graduation rates to climb, and well-rounded student-athletes toemerge upon their graduation from The U ofM.

athletes and coaching staffs. At the 2002 Fall Orientation, Dr. Luckey

challenged the Center’s staff, the coachingstaffs and the student-athletes tocollaboratively enhance the academic per-formance of U of M student-athletes. TheCenter made progress in that regard in thefall with the student-athlete GPAs averaging2.67, and with seven teams earning GPAs of3.0 or higher. All in all, 109 student-athletesearned GPAs of 3.0 or higher in the fall.Among that group, 53 were included on theU of M Deans’ List for achieving GPAs of 3.5or better. The following eight athletes earneda perfect 4.0 GPA: Josetta Brooks (track),Josey Edwards (golf), Rebecca Garner (ten-nis), Lisa Hyman (track), Nathan Orie (ten-nis), Scott Scherer (football), Kristan Wilson(soccer) and Heather Woolls (track).

The CAAS received a new home duringthe summer of 2003 upon the completion ofthe Wilder Tower. In addition to the CAAS,the Wilder Tower will house the offices ofadmissions, the bursar, financial aid, the reg-istrar, student development and academicadvising. A total of 8,000 square feet, encom-passing the entire sixth and seventh floors ofthe tower, have been designated for the CAAS.The area will support 31 student computerstations, 17 offices and several study tables.

Inspired by Dr. Luckey, two special sec-tions of ACAD 1100, Introduction to the Uni-versity, were offered to student-athletes only, and were taught by Dr. Luckey andKolenbrander last fall. The class was so wellreceived that a third section will be offered in2003 so that all freshman student-athletescan be included in the course. The two sec-tions last year were attended by 55 student-

Dr. Luckey heads a staff of six which in-cludes assistant director Nicole Green, coun-selors Richard Jones, Becky Kolenbrander,Bridget VanLandeghem and Maria Tyson andoffice coordinator Angela Young. In additionto the full-time staff, the CAAS utilizes 10-20tutors, graduate assistants and student work-ers. CAAS has a unique responsibility as anoffice as it provides academic services to allstudent-athletes and conducts all necessarypaperwork for NCAA academic compliance.Green, who was hired May 2003, was broughtin specifically to handle NCAA, conferenceand institutional compliance matters asso-ciated with prospective and current student-athletes. Murphy Athletic ComplexMurphy Athletic Complex

The renovation of the Billy J. Murphy Training Facility wascompleted in the spring of 2003 and the Tiger football teammoved into the spacious complex in time for spring practice.

The University of Memphis Murphy Athletic Complex is locatedapproximately one mile south of the institution’s main campusand serves as the home and training facility for most of the Ti-ger athletic teams.

Opened in 1971, the Murphy Complex was the first of its kind inthe Southeast and offered the Tiger football team the ability topractice outdoors on four 100-yard grass fields. If weather con-ditions were less than favorable, the team could move indoorsto the turfroom and workouts could continue no matter theweather.

A spacious locker room for the football team included such ameni-ties as steam and sauna rooms as well as in-house televisionand stereo systems. Large equipment rooms, training rooms andweightrooms were available for all Tiger teams that worked outat Murphy Complex.

Now the Murphy Complex is undergoing some major changesand renovations. A $6 million facelift is nearly completed at Mur-phy Complex and it gives Tiger athletes a state-of-the-art train-ing facility.

The renovation of Murphy Complex included numerous new ar-eas for team use. The 25,000 square foot addition houses a newlocker room for the football team. It also includes a theatre-stylefootball team meeting room, offensive and defensive meetingrooms and individual meeting rooms for position coaches.

A new training room has been constructed which has examina-tion rooms for team doctors, rehabilitation and taping areas andan in-ground, aquatic pool for rehabilitating injuries.

A new equipment room was constructed with an additional laun-dry room to ease the burden of taking care of the equipmentneeds of the football, track, baseball and soccer teams.

Additional locker rooms have been added for the football staff, the women’s soccer team and for visiting teams competing atthe track and baseball facilities. A media interview room, videoroom and storage rooms are also a part of the renovation project.

The crown jewel of the Murphy Complex will be a Hall of Famearea which will highlight the careers of former Tiger athletesand will offer the athletic department a facility to host banquetsand other functions pertaining to athletics.

Tiger TraditionsTiger TraditionsWHY TIGERS?

When the University of Memphis first fieldeda football team in the fall of 1912, no one had se-lected a nickname for the squad.

Early references to the football team, tabbedthem only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of WestTennessee Normal School.

After the final game of the 1914 season, therewas a student parade. During this event, severalNormal students shouted, "We fight like Tigers".The nickname was born.

More and more the nickname "Tigers" wasused, particularly in campus publications. But itdid not catch on with the newspapers downtown. They continued to use "Normals" or the "Blue andGray" when referring to the University.

Under coach Lester Barnard in 1922, Normal'sfootball team gave a ring of truth to that old stu-dent yell about Tigers. The team adopted a motto- "Every Man A Tiger" and went on to score 174points while allowing their opponents just 29points.

In the late 1920s, student publications anddowntown newspapers began referring to the foot-ball team as the "Teachers" or "Tutors". The Tigernickname would return. But not until 1939 was itfinally adopted as the official nickname for the Uni-versity of Memphis.

A BENGAL FOR A MASCOTFor over 30 years, the sideline mascot for

University of Memphis athletics has been the Ben-gal Tiger. TOM II, the name of the current mascot, puts in personal appearances at all Tiger footballgames, as well as numerous basketball games. TOMII has also been seen at Tiger baseball, soccer andwomen's basketball games.

The first tiger, purchased by the HighlandHundred (football booster group) in 1972, livedfor 20 years and was housed at the Memphis Zoo.TOM died in February of 1992.

The story of how the first Tiger cub arrived inMemphis is quite interesting. On November 9,

1972, the baby tiger was placed in a dog kennel inMichigan City, IN, and flown to Chicago's O'HareInternational Airport. There it was placed aboard aDelta flight and arrived in Memphis at 3:00 AM.C. Cleveland Drennon, an attorney and presidentof the Highland Hundred, approved a check for$1,500 to buy the animal, and TOM was taken toathletic director Billy Murphy's office for a pressconference.

In ceremonies at Liberty Bowl Memorial Sta-dium, the Highland Hundred officially presentedTOM to the University on November 11, 1972.

The zookeeper, at the suggestion of his daugh-ter, called the little tiger, Shane. Once in Memphis, however, a contest was held to name the mascot.More than 2,500 entries came in to a committeechaired by Judge Harry Pierotti. The list ran fromSpook, Sampson, Goliath, Bengo, Sultan, Sahib,Big Cat, Ptah, Touchdown, Sonny, and Shiloh toBengie Wougie Bengal Boy from Tennessee.

Finally, the judges reduced the list to two:Shane and TOM, for Tigers of Memphis. TOMwon.

During his first few months in Memphis, BillProctor housed the tiger in his garage, which wasredecorated by the Highland Hundred. TOM wasguarded by Proctor's hound dog.

TOM II came to the University of Memphisin the fall of 1992 and is housed at his new home atNixon Farms in Collierville, Tenn. His new home is3500 square feet and includes two pools, a water-fall, heated and air conditioned den box and hasseparately, a complete medical facility for his careand upkeep. The young tiger is nearly 500 poundsand is expected to be as large or larger than hispredecessor, TOM, who was once the largest Ben-gal Tiger in captivity at 550 pounds. There is evena birthday party for TOM II prior to each footballseason.

SCHOOL COLORSThe University of Memphis' official school

The colors were chosen in aneffort to show unity in a nation thatwas still recovering from the effectsof the Civil War. The student bodythought that by picking the colors ofthe North and the South, the schoolwould show a togetherness amongall students.
