Whether this is your student’s first year at Michigan or the last, Parents & Family Weekend has something for you. We hope you take full advantage of the wonderful activities on campus, and enjoy this special weekend with your student.

By visiting campus this weekend, or at any time, you are providing a support network for your student that only you can provide. In fact, parents and family members play a vital role in the lives of college students. Many students still count on their parents to remain a steady and stable source of support and guidance. Parents can serve as mentors, offering advice and encouragement, while also promoting independence, autonomy, and responsibility.

We have found that families, who are informed about campus and local resources, are better equipped to serve as a referral source for their student. The University of Michigan offers many sources of information for parents,

Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library Open House & Lobby exhibit: “Drawdown Vietnam, April–May 1975”

You are invited to explore this National Archives-administered Presidential Library on the U-M campus. Enjoy the permanent exhibits on President and Mrs. Ford, the office used by President Ford during his many visits to U-M, and a feature exhibit, “Drawdown Vietnam, April–May 1975.” These displays explore humanitarian efforts during the last days of U.S. involvement in Vietnam: the “Fall of Saigon,” and the military evacuation of thousands of South Vietnamese civilians to ships nearby, Operation Babylift, in which more than three thousand children and babies were airlifted to safety, and the rescue of the S.S. Mayaguez, whose ship and crew were captured by forces of the new Cambodian Khmer Rouge government less than two weeks following the fall of Saigon. The unfolding of these events are chronicled in the lobby displays at the Gerald Ford Presidential Library – complete with artifacts, photographs, documents and personal stories of those involved. In celebration of Parents & Family Weekend, UMMA will offer a special edition of Fridays After 5 on November 6 with extended gallery hours until 8:00 p.m. Enjoy UMMA’s venerable, near-universal collections, including Western, Asian, African, and Modern and Contemporary works of art. Special exhibitions on view during Parents & Family Weekend include Come as You Are: Art of the 1990s, Jem Cohen: Life Drawing, Soviet Constructivist Posters, and Jem Cohen: We Have an Anchor. As always, admission is free. UMMA Fridays After Five are generously sponsored by Comerica Bank and the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.

Stamps School families are invited to enjoy a light reception from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the Street Gallery just off the east Bonisteel entrance to the Art & Architecture Building. At 12:30 in room 2030, Engagement Coordinator Charlie Michaels will speak about the School’s vibrant community engagement program, illustrating his talk with photographs of Stamps students making art and design matter outside the classroom. Student work will be displayed in the Street Gallery (east) as well as in the Hall (west).

If your student is interested in the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program, the Minor in Business, or just taking a few Ross courses, we welcome you to attend a special session about the Ross School of Business. Don’t miss this inside look at where your student spends their time during the academic year. At 6:00 p.m. join current students and other parents for an architecture lecture by a visiting expert in the field.

Shapiro & Hatcher Libraries

Enjoy refreshments and make mini works of art as you take in exhibits across the Shapiro and Hatcher Library buildings. Start things off with light appetizers in the Library Gallery and work your way toward dessert in Bert’s Study Lounge, a digital exhibit space on the first floor of the Undergraduate Library. The exhibits will feature highlights from the Library’s collections as well as student art work.

Planetarium Admission: $3

The Museum of Natural History will be open late until 8:00 p.m. Enjoy a free dinosaur tour, hands-on demonstrations, and story time in the planetarium. There will also be 30 minute planetarium shows for $3. Live animals from the Leslie Science and Nature Center will be on site as well. Event is sponsored by the State Street Area Association.

A Degree in Information: Explore U-M’s New Undergraduate Degree

If your student is looking for a cutting-edge degree program that leads to careers in everything from social media to user experience to information analysis to online tools, then the School of Information’s new, ground-breaking Bachelor of Science in Information is the perfect fit. University Musical Society Presents: The Danish String Quartet

The Danish String Quartet has an infectious joy for making music and “rampaging energy” (New Yorker), on display since their 2002 debut at the Copenhagen Festival. “This is one of the best quartets before the public today” (Washington Post). The Program includes Haydn’s Quartet No. 42 in C Major, Op. 54, No. 2, Thomas Adés’ Arcadiana, and Beethoven’s Quartet No. 16 in F Major, Op. 135. Tickets were sold in advance through the Parents & Family Weekend online registration form. Center for Campus Involvement Presents: Interactive Dinner Theater featuring Hypnotist chrisjones

Ticket Price: $30 adults, $10 children 12 and under

Student and families are invited to become part of the entertainment in this interactive show. Hypnotist chrisjones (one word) has been taking his insane hypnosis show to universities across the country. Offering a perfect balance of conjuring, psychology, comedy, and suggestion, this show allows you to become the star! This show is suitable for all ages. Tickets were sold in advance through the Parents & Family Weekend online registration form. Rude Mechanicals Fall Production: “Tribes” by Nina Raine

The Rude Mechanicals is one of few U-M student organizations that gives all majors, even non-theatre majors, a chance to take part in the process of creating a full scale theatrical production each semester. Rude Mechanicals will be performing Tribes, by Nina Raine. In Tribes, Billy was born deaf into a hearing family. He was raised inside its fiercely idiosyncratic and politically incorrect cocoon. He has adapted brilliantly to his family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that he finally understands what it means to be understood. Tickets for this event will be available through the Michigan Union Ticket Office.

Men’s Basketball vs. Le Moyne Exhibition Game

Michigan’s men’s basketball team launches its 2015–2016 season with an exhibition game against Le Moyne. The Ann Arbor Farmers Market is the open-air farmers market located in the heart of the historic Kerrytown neighborhood of Ann Arbor. With over 160 vendors, shoppers can find an extremely diverse mix of producers, artisans, and prepared food vendors.

Parents & Family Weekend Pre-Game Tailgate

Tickets: $30

An annual Parents & Family Weekend favorite, the pre-game tailgate is your opportunity to show your Michigan spirit! The tailgate features food, games, prizes and student performers to help you prepare to experience a game in the “Big House”. Scheduled to perform are the U-M Dance Team, the U-M Cheerleaders, the Michigan Marching Band, and many more student performing groups and special guests! Menu includes marinated boneless chicken breasts, smoked stadium style sausage, veggie wraps, Greek style pasta salad, redskin potato salad, baked beans, and more. Located at the Oosterbaan Fieldhouse this is the place to be rain or shine! At press time, the kickoff had not been determined. The tailgate will begin 3 hours prior to kickoff and will end 1 hour prior to kickoff. Updates will be posted at www.parents.umich.edu. Tickets were sold in advance through the Parents & Family Weekend online registration form. Attention parents of Michigan Marching Band, U-M Dance Team, U-M Cheerleaders and other student performing groups: If you wish to see your student perform at the Pre-Game Tailgate, you must purchase a ticket for this event. No one will be admitted to the Parents & Family Weekend Pre-Game Tailgate without a ticket.


Michigan v. Rutgers Football Game

Come watch the Wolverines and new head coach, Jim Harbaugh, battle the Scarlet Knights. Attending a football game at “the Big House” is one of the most popular things to do at Michigan. Review the list of prohibited items in Michigan Stadium (which includes purses) prior to attendance. Tickets were sold in advance through the Parents & Family Weekend online registration form.

Please note that NO PURSES OR BAGS ARE ALLOWED AT MICHIGAN STADIUM. If you are planning to attend the football game, make sure to read through the list of prohibited items at Michigan Stadium (mgoblue.com/genrel/060109aaf.html). Don’t let a purse ruin your Parents & Family Weekend!

The Michigan G-Men Present: G-FEST: “The Best of Michigan Performance Groups”

This year, the Michigan G-Men, who recently placed 3rd at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, will once again call together and present some of your favorite Wolverine performers! The 2015 G-FEST will sample the premiere performance groups that proudly represent the diverse, remarkably talented student population at the University of Michigan. It will be an entertaining night of singing, dancing, and more that allows visiting parents to see the amazing talent that abounds at their children’s university and shows students the amazing opportunities available to them. Tickets were sold in advance through the Parents & Family Weekend online registration form. If the event has not sold out, additional tickets will be available to purchase at the Parents & Family Weekend check-in location, Michigan Union Anderson Room.

Founded in 1859, the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club is one of the oldest collegiate choruses in the U.S. The graduate and undergraduate members of the Glee Club, chosen by audition at the beginning of both the Fall and Winter terms, represent a wide spectrum of majors. The Glee Club has become renowned for its wide repertoire of music that incorporates selections from different musical styles and periods including Renaissance motets, Romantic anthems, opera choruses, folksongs, spirituals, contemporary works, and, of course, Michigan songs. The University of Michigan Alumni Association is thrilled to offer this unique behind the scenes tour of one of America’s most iconic structures – Michigan Stadium. Featuring Dr. Robert Soderstrom, author of The Big House, Fielding H. Yost and the Building of Michigan Stadium, these tours offer amazing insight into the history of Michigan Stadium and how it became the largest collegiate stadium in the country, as well as some unique stories behind the stadium’s history. There’s no better way to celebrate the tradition that is Michigan football then by experiencing the Big House from the ground up and only the Alumni Association brings you this once in a lifetime experience. The tours are an unforgettable experience for any Maize and Blue fan. You’ll get to run through the famed tunnel onto the field; throw a touchdown pass across the goal line; kick a winning field goal; take your photo standing on the 50-yard line; spend time in the Michigan locker room; see the newly added club seating concourse and suites; and even try on an actual Michigan helmet and shoulder pads. The tour will last approximately 1.5 hours. For their safety and as a courtesy to other guests, children under 5 are not permitted on the tours. Tickets were sold in advance through the Parents & Family Weekend online registration form.

Students need you to support their growth, development, and independence, and to be a stable force in their ever-changing world. On occasion, they even need your advice — but they may or may not ask for it.

Tips for Supporting Your Student

Stay Connected

Support your student by staying connected. Communicate via phone, texting, email, chat, Skype, Facebook, and even good, old-fashioned ‘snail’ mail. Students love to get real mail, especially care packages (see ideas at carepackage.umich.edu). Expect that your student will not respond to all of your contacts, but know that he or she appreciates hearing from you.

Checking-In

Give your student the opportunity to share feelings and ideas with you. He or she is experiencing new viewpoints and perspectives that may challenge prior belief systems. Allow your student to explore ideas without being judgmental. Understand that changes in viewpoints, behavior, dress, eating and sleeping habits, and relationships with parents are all to be expected during the college years. However, if you suspect that some of these changes may be signs of bigger problems (alcohol or drug abuse, academic problems, etc.), refer

your student to the Counseling and Psychological Services office. Trust your instincts. Your student may need you to refer him or her to the appropriate resources for help.

Be Knowledgeable About Campus Resources

Utilize the M-Parent website or read the Parent Calendar & Handbook. These resources are designed specifically for parents and provide a great deal of information about the University and its departments. Helping your student to navigate a large university by referring him or her to the appropriate resources is one of the best ways for you to mentor your college student during this transition to adulthood. By acting as a referral source, you can demonstrate that you are interested in your student’s life at the University, and at the same time, you empower your student to solve his or her own problems.


Continue to Have Meaningful Conversations

• As a parent of a college student, the relationship with your child is going to transform as they gain more independence. However, you do still have a tremendous influence on your son or daughter’s behavior. In college, your student will have to make his or her own decisions including what time to get up in the morning, when to study, when to exercise, whether or not to drink alcohol , and whether or not to engage in sexual relationships. While you cannot make your student behave exactly as you would want them to, parents can share their values and beliefs with their students on these issues. Studies show that parents can positively influence their child’s behavior regarding alcohol and other drug use and sexual decision making even after their child leaves for college. Provide your student with the facts on these issues, and empower them to distinguish between healthy and harmful decisions when it comes to their behavior, health, and safety.

• If you are the parent of a new freshman, your student was required to complete an online course about alcohol use and sexual assault prevention in August. As a parent, you may be interested in learning more about college student alcohol use and sexual assault prevention. An optional online parent course is available at www.everfi.com/alcoholeduforparents. By learning more about alcohol use and sexual assault prevention on college campuses, you will have the tools you need to create an atmosphere of open communication, and your student will not only appreciate that you respect him or her as an adult, but he or she will also be more likely to turn to you for guidance.

Ask Questions — But Not Too Many

Most first-year college students desire the security of knowing that someone from home is still interested in them. Parental curiosity can be alienating or supportive depending on the attitudes of the persons involved. Honest inquiries and other “between friends” communication and discussion will do much to further the parent-student relationship.


Expect Change

Your student will change. College and the experiences associated with it can effect changes in social, vocational, and personal behavior and choices. It’s natural, inevitable, and it can be inspiring. Often though, it’s a pain in the neck. You can’t stop change, you may never understand it, but it is within your power (and to you and your student’s advantage) to accept it. Remember that your son or daughter will be basically the same person that you sent away to school.

Do Not Tell Your Student That “These Are the Best Years of Your Life”

College can be full of indecision, insecurities, disappointments, and most of all, mistakes. It’s also full of discovery, inspiration, good times, and exciting people. It may take a while for students to realize that their Hollywood-created images of what college all about are wrong. Hollywood doesn’t show that college is about being scared, confused, overwhelmed, and making mistakes. Students may feel these things and worry that they are not ‘normal’ because what they’re feeling is in contrast to what they’ve been led to believe while growing up. Parents can help by understanding that the highs and lows of college life are a critical part of your son or daughter’s development, and by providing the support and encouragement to help him or her understand this as well.

Trust Your Student

College is also a time for students to discover who they are. Finding oneself is a difficult enough process without feeling that the people whose opinions you respect most are second-guessing your own second-guessing.
