I. The Charles Stewart Mott Papers are on a four-year loan to the
General Motors Institute Alumni Historical Collection by the
Mott Foundation for the period from 1977-1981.
II. Automotive pioneer, industrial pioneer, philanthropist, executive,
businessman, banker, sailor and soldier, ccmmunity and educational
leader, Charles Stewart Mott vas born in Newark, Nev Jersey, on
June 2, 1875, son of John Coon Mott and Isabella Turnbull Stewart Mott.
Mr. Mott's early education vas in the Nev York Public Schools. In
1892 he graduated from Stevens High School in Hoboken, Nev Jersey.
From 1692 to 1894, Mr. Mott attended Stevens Institute of Technology,
Hoboken, Nev Jersey, studyinp, mechanical engineering. The years
1894 and 1895 were spent studying Zymotechnology (science of fermentation) in Copenhagen, Denmark, and chemistry of fermentation
in Munich, Germany, to learn nev techniques useful in the family cider and vinegar business in Bouckville, Nev York. After studying, touring Europe on his bicycle and attending concerts and art museums,
Mr. Mott returned to Stevens Institute in 1895. After graduation from
Stevens Institute in 1897 as a Mechanical Engineer, Mr. Mott worked with his father manufacturing carbonating machinery for the
C. S. Mott Company of New York so named to enco\ age young Mott to
join the business.
Mott had joined the Nev York State Naval Militia in 1894, and when
the Spanish-American War broke out, he served on active duty in the
United States N VY as Gunner's Mate, First Class, on the USS Yankee.

After the Spanish-American War, Mott worked in the fami businesses
vhich included the C. S. Mott Company and the Weston-Mott Company
vhich manufactured vire wheels.
In 1899 his father died, and in 1qoo c. S. Mott became Factory Superintendent and Secretary of the Weston-Mott Company of Utica, New York. After thP. dvent of the automobile and shift from vire
wheels to vooden artillery type vheels, Mr. Mott bee n •lesignine:
anu manufacturing axles. On June 4, 1905, W. C. Durant, creator of General Motors, wrote to C. S. Mott: "Would you entertain a
proposition of removing or establishing a branch factory at Flint,
Michigan •••" Mott consented and final arrangements for Weston-Mott to move to Flint were finali?.P.l Ll\bor Day veek·m !, 1905. In the
spring of 1906 Weston-Mott began building a factory next to the nev Buick Factory in Flint, Michigan, and the company vas to become

Flint that paved the road to Mr. Mott's great industrial and
philanthropic career. The Flint plant or Weston-Mott vas completed
early in 1907 and on February 1, 1907, Mott broup,ht his family to
live in Flint. His first home vns at lao6 East Kearsley. In 1909
he built Mother house at 423 Kearsley and 1917 the Mott 's movP.<l
into Applevood vhich vas Mr. Mott's home until his death .

In 1908 General Motors vas organized and soon bought 49% of Weston Matt Company stock, and in 1913 Mr. Mott exchanged the remaining 51% of Weston-Mott Company stock in return for General Motors stock.
That same year, 1913, C. S. Mott became a Director of General Motors and held that office until his death. The various positions he held
vith General Motors were :
1913-1973 Member, Board of Directors 1916-1937 Vice President 1922-1929 Member, Executive Committee 1929-1937 Member, Finance Committee 1939-1967 Member, Audit Committee and Chairman
Married four times, Mr. Mott had six children. Three were born by
his first vife Ethel Culbert Harding vhom he married in June, 1900: Aimee Mott, born 1902; Elsa Beatrice Mott, born 190h; and Charles Stevart Harding Mott, born 1906. His last marriage vas on
October 13, 193 , vhen Mr. Mott and Ruth Mott Ravlings, a distant cousin, vere married in El Paso, Texas. They had three children:
Susan Elizabeth Mott, born 1936; Stevart Ravlings Mott, born 1937; and Maryanne Turnbull Mott ,born 1942.
Mr. Mott vas Mayor of Flint for three terms, in 1912, 1913 and in 1918 and contributed greatly to the groving Flint by improving streets, sidewalks, sever system, lighting and Flint's Fire Department. Although
entering the gubernatorial campaign on the Republican ticket late in
1920, Mr. Mott finished third in a field of nine.
His great philanthropic contribution to Flint vas the incorporation of
the Mott Foundation in 1926 vhich concentrated its efforts to help Flint develop in social and educational aspects and through improvement
in health care. Flint became a model city for the world through the development of its educational facilities vith the cooperation of the Flint Board of Education. c. S. Mott spent the remainder of his life concerning himself vith details of the operation of the Foundation.
Mr. Mott's generosity has not been confined to Flint but has reached other cities throughout the United States such as the Children's Health
Center in Ann Arbor , Michigan, and the University of Chicago Industrial
Relations Building in Chicago, Illinois, for the development of a program
for economic education, leadership and communications.
Mr. Mott had a strong sense of both personal and public responsib ilities
and contributed greatly not only financially but vith his personal time,
energy and interest to many civic developments and activities such as
The Flint Community Service Center, Mott Children's Health Center,
Y.W.C.A ., Mott Boys' Camp. Other examples of his support are Boy Scouts . Goodvill Industries , Flint's College and Cultural Center, Red Feather, hospitals, parks and recreation . He personally participated in
"Operation Tornado" in 1953 as a carpenter to help rebuild homes destroyed by the tornado and vas later avarded a life membership in the
American Federation of Painters and Decorators Local 1052.

In addition to service in the Spanish-American War, Mr. Matt served
as a Major in the Quartermaster Corps from 1917-1919. In this capacity
Mr. Mott vas responsible for coordination of vartime industrial production for the Detroit area. In 1924 he vas commissioned Colonel in the Army Ordinance Reserve, and from 1924-1925 he vas a civilian aid for Michigan to the Secretary of War. In 1941 Mr. Mott vas honorary chairman of the Flint Committee of United China Relief, and in 1942 vas named on the Civilian Defense Council in World War II.
Mr. Mott vas active in several Flint and Detroit Clubs and has received numerous honors and avards as expressions of appreciation including the "Big Brother Avard" in 1955 bestoved on him by President Eisenhover.
He received several honorary degrees from universities throughout the United States. Flint has honored Mr. Mott vith several community birthday parties to shov appreciation for his many contributions. On
his 8oth birthday, Mr. Matt presented the Flint College and Cultural Center With the Charles Stevart Mott Community Center of Science and Applied Arts, and he broke ground for the University of Michigan building. He donated the Charles Stevart Mott Library to the Charles Stevart Mott Community College named after him after his death.
An Episcopalian, Mr. Mott actively participated in the church and its grovth. Active in the Masons and Shriners, American Legion, and one or the original founders of the American Automobile Association,
Mr. Mott "thrived on challenges". He had several hobbies including
horses, tennis, yachting, fishing and photography. He belonged to
the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club near his residence "Parparet" in Somerset
Bridge , Bermuda.
Several magazines and nevspapers have carried biographical sketches of
Charles Stevart Mott, and a biography Foundation for Living vas vritten
by Clarence H. Young.
In addition to his career as a General Motors executive C. S.Mott vas active in many other businesses and organizations. His vise council
and guidance vas videly sought and he often served on boards of directors
and held offices in numerous organizations, including :

Mr. Mott had enthusiasm, intelligence, sincerity and motivation; he was economical, careful and considerate, and he gave not only money
but his personal interest and time for the betterment of mankind. He
lived up to the Mott family motto until his death February 18, 1973.

III. The collection consists of approximately 90 linear feet of correspondence, manuscripts, map,azine articles, newspaper
clippinv,s, uncut nevspapers, reports, directories, publications,
blueprints, ledgers, stock books, minute books, record books,
photop,raphs, scrapbooks, notebooks, portfolios, articles, C. S.
Mott's notes
and comments, programs, books, magazines, tour guides,maps,
postal cards, membership cards, receipts and memorabilia.
This collection p,ives a broad scope of C. S. t4ott's varied interests;
industrial, business, political and military careers; civic,
philanthropic and educational activities. A vast amount of
correspondence includes that vith personal acquaintances, political,
business, industrial and educational leaders; also correspondence
with his family while aboard the USS Yankee.
There is an immense amount of biographical material on
Charles Stewart Matt's life including numerous avards and degrees.
Mr. Matt's personal notes and writings are of special interest .
