The annual Christmas Art Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the University

Center (UC) Mall at th~ University of Montana through Dec. 6. Items for sale at the

fair include pottery, ceramics, photographs, painting, woodwork, toys, jewelry, candles,

leather craft and yarn and fabric craft. The art fair is sponsored by UC Programming

and is open to the public free of admission charge.

A Campus Photography Show, sponsored by UM Campus Recreation, will continue through

Dec. 10 in the UC Gallery. Photographs in the show, taken by University students, faculty and

and staff, include black and white/color prints. UC Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Monday-Friday; 7-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, and noon-3 p.m. Sunday.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6

Dr. John M. Bird, professor of geology at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., will

present a free public lecture entitled "Evolution of the Earth" at noon in room 304 of

the UM Science Complex. Bird's visit to UM under a distinguished lecturer program is

sponsored by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

11The High Cost of a Free Ride," an adventure ski movie will be shown at 8 p.m. in the

UC Ballroom. The movie, produced by Dick Barrymore, emphasizes that the world's best

skiing is useless without years of practice, condition and dedication. Advance tickets

for the movie cost $1 for UM students and $2 for the public and tickets sold at the door

will be $1.50 for UM students and $2.50 for the public. Tickets may be bought at

Gull Ski Shop, 3309 W. Broadway Ave.; Sundance Sports, 2100 Stephens Ave.; Bob Ward

and Sons, 2300 Brooks; Sanderson OK Hardware, 248 W. Main, Hamilton, and the UC

Bookstore. The movie is sponsored by UM Ski Club and the Associated Students of UM

Programming.

"An Evening of Chamber Music" will be presented by UM faculty and students at

8 p.m. in the UM Music Recital Hall. The Montana String Quartet will perform works

by Beethoven and Schumann; the Montana Woodwind Quintet will play works by Jean-Michel

Damase and Eugene Bozza and two faculty members will perform a sonata by Fritz Skorzeny.

The recital is free and open to the public.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11

11Saint Nicolas, A Christmas Cantata11 by Benjamin Britten will be presented at 3 p.m.

in the University Theatre free of charge. The cantata will include the University

Choir and Collegiate Chorale, the Acappella Choir from Sentinel High School, and the

UM Little Symphony string and percussion sections. A prelude of Christmas carols will

be performed by the University Brass Quintet prior to the concert. The cantata, open to

the public, is presented by the UM School of Fine Arts and Department of Music.

JOB OPENINGS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA. The University is an equal opportunity

The UM Department of Social Work needs a teaching assistant. Applications are due

Dec. 9 at UM Personnel Services, 258 Lodge.

The University Center Food Service needs a lead catering waiter/waitress.

Applications for the part-time job are due Dec. 15 at Personnel Services.

The botany department is seeking an instructor or assistant professor to teach a

genetics course Winter Quarter only. Applicants should have at least an advanced degree

in zoology or botany, training in genetics and evolution and prior teaching and research

experience. Apply by Dec. 10 to S. Preece, chairman of the department. ###
