KarlE.Karlstrom isaProfessorattheUniversityofNewMexico.Hisresearchincludesstructuralgeology,tectonics,andlandscapeevolution.HegrewupinFlagstaffandstartedhisGrandCanyonresearchwhenhewasaprofessoratNAUfrom1983-1991.HehascontinuedhisGrandCanyonresearchwhileatUNM,since1991andteachestheUNMAdvancedSummerFieldCampinGrandCanyon.GrandCanyonresearchgrantsfromtheNationalScienceFoundationtotalmorethan1.5milliondollars.OutreacheffortsincludetheTrailofTimegeoscienceexhibition, completedin2010,fundedwith2.3milliondollarsfromtheNationalScienceFoundation,andafirstplaceawardfromtheNationalAssociationforInterpretationin2011.Karlstrom’s GrandCanyoncontributionsinclude56refereedjournalarticles,2geologicmaps,127abstractsatprofessionalmeetings,andcompletionof3PhD,9MStheses,andnumerousundergraduateresearchtheses.HeandLaurieconductGeotrainingsforRiverguidesandParkinterpreters.ResearchcontributionstoGrandCanyongeologyinclude:1)tectonicevolutionandagesoftheVishnubasementrocks;2)tectonichistoryandagesoftheGrandCanyonSupergroup;3)QuaternaryevolutionofGrandCanyon landscapesincludingincisionhistory;4)Potentialresolutionofthe140-year-long“ageofGrandCanyon”debateviathe“paleocanyonsolution”paperthatappearedinNatureGeoscience in2014.

Dr.LauraJ.CrosseyisprofessorandrecentChairofEarth&PlanetarySciencesattheUniversityofNewMexico.Herresearchinterestsincludelow-temperaturegeochemistry;includingdiagenesis,hydrochemistryandgeomicrobiology.Herresearchapproachemphasizesinterdisciplinaryfieldresearch–withongoingprojectsintheRockyMountains,SouthwesternUSA,SimpsonDesertoftheAustralianoutback,andtheWesternDesertofEgypt.CrosseyisaleaderatUNMineffortstoincreaseminorityparticipationinscience,andistheDirectorfortheLouisStokesAllianceforMinorityParticipationundergraduateresearchprograminadditiontotheMinorityBridgetotheDoctorate.WithKarl,sheleddesignandinstallationoftheTrailofTimegeoscienceexhibitionatGrandCanyonNationalPark.ShehasbeenresearchingGrandCanyontopicssince1995,withemphasisontheChuar Group,travertines(theyoungestrocksofGrandCanyon),andthehydrologyandgaschemistryoftheGrandCanyon’sincisedaquifer.Crossey’sresearchcontributionstoGrandCanyonGeologyinclude:1)documentingmantledegassinginGrandCanyonSpringsthroughnoblegasanalyses,2)quantifyingmixingof“LowerWorld”and“UpperWorld”componentsofGrandCanyonaquifers,3)monitoringinnercanyonspringstoestablishabaselineforwatersupplyandwaterquality.
