This year we introduced Whitley’s Premium Nuts into our fall product sale mix and it make a huge difference. Our units collectively sold over $400,000 worth of tasty nuts and party mix. We are thrilled to have Whitley’s and CAMP MASTERS at our side to make great programs possible. None of this would be possible of course without the dedication, commitment, time and talent of an incredible committee of district and unit kernels. Also, be sure to give Christine Crittenden, Council Queen of Popcorn a high five the next time you see her! We are also proud to be able to send six Scouts to a free week of summer camp. THE FORCE WAS WITH YOU!

On Friday, December 20, 900 Scouts and families will fill two full theaters at Regal Henrietta for the exclusive Council premier of Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker. These Scouts, parents and volunteers will have all earned their way to watch opening night of Star Wars by participating in this fall’s product sale.

Scouts in 160 units throughout every corner of the Seneca Waterways Council helped make this fall’s product sale the highest grossing sale in recent memory, selling a combined $1,150,000 worth of popcorn and nuts. That’s a lot of product and our community came together in a big way to support our Scouting programs and make sure that young people have exceptional programs in their neighborhoods.

Most importantly, it means that over $808,000 is being put to right back into local programs and services both at the unit level and funding the support, services and camps of our Council.

We would like to give a special salute to the top selling Scouts in our Council who sold

— DEVELOPMENT & FUNDRAISING —

Seneca Waterways Council is looking for Scouts, Leaders, and Parents who have a story to tell and are willing to share it publicly via print, TV, radio and social media. Throughout the year, there are many occasions for the council to highlight the great things happening in Scouting, but we need your help to do so!

Several opportunities where we need “stars”

include our annual report, speaking at special events, television and radio appearances, and features in our newsletters, website, or social media platforms.

So if you have a budding star interested in “15 minutes of fame (or longer),” please contact marketing at [email protected] or call Mary Ellen Smith, Marketing Communications Manager at 585-241-8544.

EAGLE SCOUT MENTOR DINNER & GATHERING OF EAGLES

21 STORIES FOR SCOUTS

The over 200 young men in the 2019 Class of Eagle Scouts will be recognized for their remarkable achievements at the 69th Annual Eagle Scout Mentor Dinner on January 14, 2020. This banquet at Burgandy Basin celebrates the hard work and commitment of these Scouts and the leaders and parents who helped get them to this pinnacle achievement.

If there was a graduation ceremony for the Class of Eagle Scouts, this is it.

At the dinner we present the recipients of the Eagle Scout Service Project of the Month and Year, along with the winner of the Louis

& Sally Langie Eagle Scout Scholarship, a 4-year, $5,000 a year scholarship to a Scout from Seneca Waterways Council. We are also looking forward to recognizing an Outstanding adult Eagle Scout from our community for his lifetime of leadership and service.

One of the goals of the dinner is to pair each Scout up with an adult mentor in his career field of interest so they can share their life experience and give the Scout a little lift. If you would like to attend the dinner, sponsor a Scout or serve as a mentor, please contact Laurie Bauer at 585-241-8526.

REGISTRATION FUND ASSISTANCECollectively the National Registration Fee increase from $33 to $60 means a significant financial impact in additional registration expenses to the units in Seneca Waterways Council, BSA. We are keenly aware of the burden this last-minute fee increase has on many of our units, especially this time of year.

To help ease the burden of this additional fee increase, the Seneca Waterways Council created a one-time Registration Assistance Fund to give up to $50,000 worth of assistance to units that are unable to cover the cost of this registration fee change. The $50,000 is being covered by the Council’s Operating Budget, thanks in large part to the

success of Popcorn & Nut sales and Friends of Scouting. While the funds are offsetting a national membership fee, they are enabling local Scouts to stay in the program or reducing a burden on local Packs or Troops who might not otherwise be able to absorb the increase.

We are proud that we could make this fund available and be a partner to keeping Scouting affordable and available to all young people in our Council.

For more information on how your Friends of Scouting contribution makes a difference, please visit www.senecawaterways.org.

It Takes a Village (continued from font page)

By the time you read this, 100% of our Council’s staff, Executive Board and district-level volunteers will have made their personal commitments to our mission through Friends of Scouting. And we’d like you to join us.The Seneca Waterways Council invests over $196 per Scout in programs and services to our nearly 10,000 members. We are reliant on the generosity of the Scouting and broader community to fund our mission of instilling values and building character in young people. A Scout is thrifty, and our contributors feel good knowing that over 82 cents of every $1 raised are returned in the form of programs and services.

When a volunteer visits your unit and asks for your pledge, please give until it feels good, knowing that every dollar you contribute is 100% tax deductible, invested

locally and is very much appreciated by all the families we are able to serve -- thanks to you!

Individuals who are able to support at the One Scout level or above ($196+) receive a fully-embroidered shoulder patch. Many of our supporters find it easier to make a recurring monthly pledge on their credit card rather than paying all at once, and we recognize these gifts as members of our Summit Circle.

For more information on the impact of your support or to make a secure, online gift, visit www.senecawaterways.org/give.

Donors now have one additional way to make a secure gift to Scouting … through your mobile phone. A simple text of “FOS2020” to (844) 615-4269 will provide a direct link to our online giving page. There’s really no easier way to give.

For additional ways that you or the company you work for can support Scouting, call 585- 244-4210.

Look up! It’s a bird, it’s a plane … it could be you on the side of the iconic Kodak World Headquarters rappelling down the side in our annual 21 Stories for Scouts event. This high visibility event returns for its 11th year on May 29th and gives up to 120 volunteers the chance to rappel down the side of Kodak while raising funds to support our urban outreach programs in the city of Rochester.

Participants register by setting up a fundraising page at www.21storiesforscouts.org with a goal of raising $1,000 or more. After that, it’s similar to a walk-a-thon where you reach out to friends, family and colleagues for support on your page to help send you over the edge.

Companies and organizations can register a team of up to six participants with a goal of raising $5,000. Each participant sets up their own fundraising page and the company is only responsible for the unraised balance. Most of our Team Sponsors in 2019 ended

up getting sponsorship benefits without writing a corporate check.

THE RETURN OF "LITTLE JOE"

2020 features the return of our hero ‘Little Joe’ Aiello who has set an ambitious goal of raising $100,000 for Scouting. We are sure he will and will help him all the way.

Visit www.21storiesforscouts.org to register or for more information.

The Camp Card initiative is designed to help Scouts earn their way to summer camp, whether it be Cub Scout Adventure Camp, Babcock Hovey, Massawepie Scout camps, day camp or a high adventure opportunity.

Units participating in the program can earn commissions up to 55% of the cards retail cost. The remaining will support the Council to help make improvements to the Council’s three Camps. The sale will begin Feb 1st and units will have until May 1st to close out their accounts.

Also, Scouts will be able to WIN a free week of camp at one of Seneca Waterways summer programs. Each troop can submit their top selling Scout for a drawing, provided the Council Commission on each card sold, is paid. There will be three drawings: Feb, March & April. Scouts not chosen will remain in the drawing for the next one. If your Scout is the Top selling scout again, he will get another entry. To participate be sure to fill out the entry forms located in the Camp Card Leader guide found on the website.

SEABASESince its inception, Scouting has been all about exploring and appreciating the wilderness. The Florida National High Adventure Sea Base offers a year-round opportunity to explore a completely different type of

wilderness—the underwater wilderness. The Florida Sea Base provides many vehicles to gain access to this underwater wilderness—large sailing vessels, power boats, kayaks, and scuba equipment. Imagine thousands of square miles of underwater coral formations, peaks, valleys, and literally hundreds of different types of colorful fish. Your mask will become kaleidoscope of colors as you glide effortlessly among pillars of coral and multihued fish. The warm, clear waters of the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, or St. Thomas give you the sensation of weightlessness in this underwater wilderness.

The Florida National High Adventure Sea Base operates 20 adventures from six locations: three in the Florida Keys, one in Marsh Harbor, Bahamas, one in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and one in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Seneca Waterways Council is preparing to form high adventure trek for scouts who are at least 13 years to attend one of the many opportunities at the Seabase. Not only Scouts, but adult leaders to take the trip as well. For questions about Florida Seabase Trek and how you can help please email [email protected]

2020 TREKSYoung men and women can test their skills on one of the 10 High Adventure Treks in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. Led by experienced Voyageur Guides, there is a trek for every skill level. Each trek can be customized to meet your groups specific interests. If you are a Boy Scout Troop looking for a hassle-free high adventure opportunity or a Venturing Crew ready for the next adventure, the Massawepie Trek Center is the region’s leader for high adventure.

All Scouts and Scouters are offered the chance for canoeing, backpacking, or combination treks. Each experience will test abilities and create a memory that will last a lifetime. Our six-day treks are designed to be a complete summer camping experience for any group. Solo treks are the ideal program for the 14-year old scout whose entire unit may not be able to go on a trek.

Treks are rated on their degree of difficulty (physical endurance and outdoor skills needed). Ratings of 1 are very easy. Treks rated 10 will very difficult even for an experienced Scout or Scouter. Similarly, each trek is assigned a wilderness rating coinciding with human activities encountered along the way rather than physical landscape. Treks with Ratings of 1 will guarantee the you will see other groups and signs of civilization. Although Treks rated 10 will offer Total Solitude.

We have two “styles” of treks that ensure the maximum enjoyment for your group. They are Exploratory and Destination treks. Each provide different opportunities and experiences on your trek. Selecting a style will allow us to construct a trek to meet your expectations.

An Exploratory trek means exactly what it sounds like. It allows for slightly less structure and a greater opportunity to take a variety of day trips and possible day hikes. Much of this can be planned as you go and allows scouts to help plan their trek. This would involve moving campsites around less and exploring the region you’re in.

Destination treks are more structured, and involve a start point and end point. This often is the trek for older scouts with the possibility of covering a lot of miles. Both provide a great opportunity to see the pristine wilderness of the Adirondacks. Troops and Crews that are looking to book their high adventure trek should contact [email protected].

SOLO treks will consist of provisional scouts and leaders from different units. Scouts will have the opportunity to bring a friend and/or have a unique experience with a parent! The scouts will also get a chance to meet new people from across the council and other councils. The 2020 Solo Trek Route will be Long Lake-Fish Creek Ponds (Follensby Clear Pond) Trek. This trek will take you on a quintessential Adirondack trip starting in the village of Long Lake and ending in Follensby Clear Pond, a haven for canoers. Sign up today because space is limited!!"

Welcome Leigh Kozak!

Leigh Kozak joins us as our new Lighthouse District Executive from Massachusetts. After graduating in May of 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Lesley University Leigh left for Kosovo as a member of the Peace Corps.

While serving in Kosovo, Leigh worked as a High School English Teacher; outside of the classroom she cultivated close relationships with local community counterparts to run

families. FOS helps better our scouting programs and their affordability for all families! FOS presentation scheduling will be communicated by unit leadership, and please ask your unit leadership with any questions you may have.

District MeetingsThe District Roundtable meetings (listed at right) are held at 7:30 on the dates specified with commissioners meeting at 7:00pm at Waterloo High School.

resume workshops and interview bootcamps. Upon returning to the US Leigh resumed working with the Massachusetts Audubon Society as a Teacher Naturalist. Over the summer Leigh continued her work with the Massachusetts Audubon Society as the camp’s CIT Coordinator.

As a former Girl Scout, Leigh has a special place in her heart for Scouting; and once the summer came to a close, she wanted to continue working in the Not for Profit world which lead her to join the Seneca Waterways Council. She is excited to be here, and we are excited to have her as one of our newest team members.

Friends of ScoutingAs a wise scouter once said: With the turn of the New Year, we begin another Friends of Scouting Campaign. Scouting doesn’t sell a “product”, nor does it provide a service to be paid for, rather- Scouting is a collection of Volunteers coming together for the same cause- We’re parents coming together to help raise each other’s children. To do that, it takes a lot of time, knowledge, and support.

Every year, over 7,000 volunteers in the Seneca Waterways Council make pledges to support Scouting. Their pledges go to maintaining the 3 beautiful camps, providing a Service Center for our area, and helping nearly 4,000 Scouts attend summer camp. Without Friends of Scouting, there would be no way for all of us to help young people learn the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Thank you for all of the time, knowledge, and financial support you’ve provided to the youth of our community

New Unit PartnersExploring West is looking to grow opportunities in many areas. We are looking to expand programming into the club age (grades 6-8) while looking to expand into more city school centers. Also, we are working on new chartered partners in clusters like health care, firefighting, law enforcement and engineering. Please check our website at www.swcexploring.org for updates. • This Fall we are looking to kick off our first Vet program with the Zoo. They are allowing the lucky few explorers to take part in the care of their exotic animals and have the opportunity to see if that would of interest to some kids.

Exploring East is looking to expand its post and opportunities for kids in the finger lakes area! Both businesses and students are having a hard time connecting. If anyone in the scouting world has knowledge of any business or person looking to start up a post, please have them contact Bradley.rickman@scouting .org. HOLIDAY GIVING TREEThe Strong Scout Shop is providing an opportunity for the Scouting community to help local Scout members who may be in need of uniforms and uniform items.

This help will be done through The Holiday Giving Tree program. The Holiday Giving Tree program works on a donation basis. A Holiday Giving tree (similar to an Angel tree) will be set up at the Scout Shop with Holiday Giving cards on it. Each card will have the first name of the Scout along with the uniform items that they need. There will also be a space for other items they may want such as books, crafts, camping items, etc. Customers and Scout supporters can purchase the item(s) in their local Scout Shop

and give them to the store staff to collect for each child.

We will keep the name of the individual(s) confidential. Only the store staff will have access to the Scout’s name and your contact information. A code will be issued that will match a card in the safe that will have your contact information, so as the donations are collected store staff will contact you so arrangements for pickup can be made.

We need your assistance to make this project a success. Please fill out a form at the Scout Shop as soon as possible for every Scout who would benefit from donations.

In addition, consider stopping in or calling in to help a Scout in need! You can make purchases for an entire Scout’s need, or a portion of a card, or even donate a flat amount. Every little bit helps!

If you have any concerns or questions, please contact the store staff by email: [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your assistance. With leaders like you, this program will greatly benefit our Scouting community.
