ONGOING COURSES and ACTIVITIES: BOOK CLUB – SECOND:(1st Monday) Date: Monday 4th May 10.00am U3A Centre.

"Wild Swans" our next book is absolutely mesmerising, like all great stories of survival - no matter what tragedies and horrors are encountered along the way. It is the personal story of three generations of Chinese women who endured Mao's Cultural Revolution. Jung Chang, the author was the first person from the People's Republic of China to receive a doctorate from a British university. The events in this book unfolded in our time yet few in the Western world were aware of the terrible plight of the Chinese people. It is an unforgettable family memoir. Convener: Merril 4058 1809. (Session full.) BOOK CLUB – THREE:(1st Monday). Date: Monday 4th May 1:15pm-3:00pm. Mulgrave

Room U3A Centre. The book under discussion this month will be The Children Act by Ian McEwan. Fiona Maye is a leading High Court Judge, presiding over cases in the Family Court. She is called on to try an urgent case: for religious reasons, a seventeen-year-old boy is refusing medical treatment that could save his life. Convener: Jill Greaves, Ph. 4051 1765 BOOK CLUB - FOUR:(2nd Monday) Date: Monday 11th May1:15pm – 3:00pm at U3A

Centre in Scott Room. Cost $3.00. New members welcome.

“Eyrie” written by Tim Winton. Tom Keely’s reputation is in ruins and that’s the upside. Divorced and unemployed, he’s lost faith in everything precious to him. Holed up in a grim high-rise building cultivating his newfound isolation, Keely looks down at a society from which he’s retired, hurt and angry. He’s done fighting the good fight, and well past caring. But even in his seedy flat, ducking the neighbours, he’s not safe from entanglement. All it takes is an awkward encounter in the lobby. A woman from his past, a boy the likes of which he’s never met before. Two strangers leading a life beyond his experience and into whose orbit he

falls despite himself. A funny, confronting, exhilarating and haunting story.

Please note that there are still vacancies available within this group.

EXPLORING MUSIC; (2nd Friday) Date: Friday 8th May 9.45-midday. Severin Hall U3A Centre. Cost $3.00. Correct money please.

The main topic of the May session is an emotionally charged performance of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" Symphony, with Daniel Barenboim leading the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. The aim of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is to promote understanding between Israelis and Palestinians and pave the way for a peaceful and fair solution of the Arab-Israeli conflict. What makes this a very special performance is the musical harmony and unity between these young musicians from opposite political views, enforced by the symphony's message "Alle Menschen werden Bruder" .Tutor Herman Soenario; [email protected] 0417 939 019

Viola and Piano Recital - a First for our Region. Vincent Peters is a Dutch viola player of the highly acclaimed Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, which is internationally hailed as “The Best Orchestra in the World”. I went to both Brisbane concerts during their World Tour in 2013, and met some of the musicians, amongst which was Viola player Vincent Peters. This month Vincent Peters is visiting Australia to join the Viola section of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for two Beethoven IX concerts commemorating Anzac Australia. Vincent has gracefully accepted an invitation to come to our region and give a series of Viola Recitals. He will be accompanied by concert pianist Evgeny Ukhanov who has become our very own Residential concert pianist since his first performances in our region in 2000. The program will include original viola compositions and viola arrangements by Bach, Paganini Brahms, Ravel and Rachmaninov and others. "The orchestra is a human laboratory that can express to the whole world how to cope with the other."So, whilst I am still "floating" on clouds of music, I would like to share another Ninth with you. The May Ninth is a "live" performance of the West-Eastern Divan orchestra conducted by a very emotional Baremboim, and trust me, It is a very moving and inspiring performance. I can't wait to enjoy and share it with you. May I suggest you earmark Sunday the 19th for a Premiere event - a Viola-Piano Recital, which is really a First for our region. Venue: Holy Cross Church Smithfield-Trinity Park, at 5pm. Did you know that Bach, Telemann, Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn preferred to play the Viola when they performed chamber music?
