Unlock your courses with Open Educational Resources (OER)

• What is Open Educational Resources (OER)?

• Why should I consider adopting OER in my courses?

• Who are the major contributors?

• Where can I find OER resources?

• How can I copyright or share OER materials?

• What is Fair Use?

• How does OER benefit students?

Join us during Faculty Development Week to learn more about OER

Open Education resources (OER) are here! As part of a Texas Consortium, this is an innovative initiative across higher education institutions that has the potential to benefit students by lowering the costs of course materials. OER are an important element of the evolving infrastructure for learning. OER come in forms ranging from podcasts to digital libraries to textbooks, games, and courses. They are freely and openly available to anyone over the Web, and they can be freely used without charge or permission in most cases. Thousands of educators are joining the movement to create and share textbooks, assignments, exercises, and teaching materials instead of relying on costly and proprietary commercial sources. You can use the information from this series of workshops to help you begin your search and/or learn more about OER resources. Moreover, you can learn about the educational fair use law and copyright restrictions. In Part 6, you will learn about using other people’s material, why OER content can be used freely, and the best places to find good OER content. Remember, Open Education Resources are improving every year, so please consider this option (even if you have looked before and did not find anything).

PART 1 - Ready, Set, OER / Faculty Panel – Dr. Julie Penley, Michelle Conklin, Carlos Aguilar, Dr. Rebecca Escamilla, Cynthia Gamez, Dr. Jose Pacheco-Lucero, Dr. Sergio Saenz-Rivera, and Dr. Naomi Waissman Open Educational Resources (OER) combine teaching, learning and research for faculty to use in their classes. EPCC OER Faculty Reviewers will discuss how they will be using OER this coming semester, including how they plan to increase student engagement through provided materials and resources. (Part 1 of 6 of the OER Series Workshops) PART 2 - OER at EPCC: Results of Spring 2017 Implementation / Faculty Panel - Dr. Julie Penley, Manuel Alvarado, Kathleen A. Bombach, Karina Castillo, Linda Chamblin, Fan Chen, Ivette Chuca, Olienka De La O Fernandez, Dr. Melissa Esmacher, Armin Harrison, Dr. Hyung Park, Dr. David Raley, and Eddie Rodriguez-Trevizo EPCC faculty developers and reviewers will report results of their use of Open Educational Resources (OER) in their Spring 2017 courses, including the development/review process, faculty and student perceptions of the OER materials, general strengths and challenges, and tips for faculty who will be using OER in coming semesters. We'll also be sharing data on student outcomes in OER sections and plans for future implementation in these courses. NOTE: this workshop is different than the "Ready, Set, OER" workshop which focuses on faculty who will be using OER for the first time in fall 2017. (Part 2 of 6 of the OER Series Workshops) PART 3 – How to Design an Open Educational Resources Course – Gabe Camacho and Manuela Gomez Come learn the basics of instructional design using Open Educational Resources (OER). We will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to develop your very own OER course from scratch or how to reuse and adapt materials other educators have developed under the Creative Commons license. Moreover, learn how you can integrate with the Blackboard platform. (Part 3 of 6 of the OER Series Workshops) PART 4 – Want to Join the OER Movement at EPCC? – Dr. Julie Penley and Lorely Ambriz Open Educational Resources (OER) are here! As part of a Texas Consortium, OER is an innovative initiative across higher education institutions that has the potential to benefit students by lowering the costs of course materials; at the same time, it allows the faculty to increase their publishing rate. Come learn more about OER, hear how the availability of OER materials promises to be a game-changer for EPCC students and faculty, and discover how you can get involved in the next round of course reviews. (Part 4 of 6 of the OER Series Workshops) PART 5 - Finding Open Educational Resources (OER) – Lorely Ambriz, Minerva Laveaga, and Manuela Gomez Faculty will learn how to find openly licensed content for use in a class and how to reuse it in their courses. Additionally, participants will learn how to find, use, and provide proper attribution for Creative Commons licensed materials (course materials, open textbooks, videos, lesson plans, software, games, podcasts, scholarly journals, eBooks, and more) and how-to links to e-resources for which the library has paid. After finding OER materials in their subject area, participants can select one OER resource and review it using a standard evaluation criterion that will be provided. (Part 5 of 6 of the OER Series Workshops) PART 6 – Reusing, Copyrighting, and Sharing Your Own Knowledge – Lorely Ambriz and Dr. Melissa Esmacher Workshop participants will learn and understand the features and benefits of applying Creative Commons licenses and how they relate to copyright law and the Open Education Resources (OER) movement. Additionally, participants will learn how to find, use, and provide proper attribution for Creative Commons licensed materials and how they can offer their own creations under a Creative Commons license. They will also learn about the implications in safeguarding their creative works and the benefits of sharing intellectual property and copyright. The use of Creative Commons eases the way educators share knowledge creation through a social and collaborative experience; it also encourages faculty and students to properly attribute, use, and encourage further creativity. Participants are encouraged to bring some instructional course materials previously developed to copyright and share. (Part 6 of 6 of the OER Series Workshops)
