WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
Gone are the days when the lives of women were confined within four walls and all they did was their daily household
chores. Indian women have started evolving and are competing at global platforms. From businesswomen like Chanda
Kochhar and Shobhana Bhartia to actresses like Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone, our nation has it all. And it is
important, isn’t it? For Indian women to have financial independence. This world is no more patriarchal and so must not
be India. And we all should be proud that our nation has given birth to such wonderful women who are equally and at
times, even more competent than men. Since we are talking about competent women of our country, let us talk about two
of those Indian women who made it to Forbes Top 100 Most Powerful Women List.
PRIYANKA CHOPRA
The Indian actor, singer, film producer and philanthropist, first rose to fame after winning
the Miss World 2000 pageant. She is also one of India’s highest-paid actors. She bagged
numerous awards, including one National Film Award and five Filmfare Awards. The
Government of India conferred upon her the prestigious magazine featured her on the 100
most influential people in the world list. Her role as Alex Parrish on the 2015 ABC thriller drama Quantico, made her the
first Indian to act as the protagonist in an American network drama series. Working with UNICEF for the last ten years,
she was also appointed as the national and global UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Child Rights in 2010 and 2016.
While her singing career has three singles out, she is also the founder of the production company Purple Pebble Pictures,
which released the celebrated 2016 Marathi film, Ventilator.
SHOBHANA BHARTIA
Shobhana Bhartia is the Chairperson and Editorial Director of the Hindustan Times Group, one
of India’s leading newspaper and media houses, which she inherited from her father, industrialist
KK Birla. She grew up in Kolkata and studied at Loreto House. She graduated from Calcutta

YOUTH WISDOM NGO
The parts of the cities, where these slums are located, are quite congested, as they are over populated. The conditions of
the slum areas in metropolitan cities have deteriorated to such an extent due to the high density of population that the
people there hardly enjoy even the basic amenities. The lanes are narrow, and the houses are nothing but a single room
tenement without the facilities of an open courtyard or an enclosure, thus depriving the people of natural gifts like
sunshine and air.
In this area, people use common latrines and water taps. Some of the slum areas do not even have single rooms, they are
thick clusters of small, dilapidated mud huts, the roofs and ceilings of which are made of scraps of wood, gunny sacks,
metal or some sort of waste material. Sometimes, 10 to 12 people live, eat and sleep in the same room. The streets are
narrow, and the sewage water stagnates in open surface drains, which emit bad smell. The children often play in places
where the drains are used as open latrines.
We, the Second year Bhagwan Mahavir Students of Business Administration saw the need to look and decided to do
something about the disturbing situation to help the poor. Thus, we decided to provide them with food, clothing and some
books for their leisure. Focusing on their basic education, we make time to teach them. Our motive aims at taking basic
lessons in the make-shift classrooms within the slums, playing games with the children after class, providing one-on-one
support, and introducing the children to activities, such as painting, which is not possible outside of school.
LOCATION: Slum area beside SMC dumping ground, Bamroli Bhatar Linku Road, Surat.

DHIRUBHAI AMBANI
A true rags-to-riches story, Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, has been
undisputedly India's most enterprising entrepreneur. Born in a Gujarat
family Dhirubhai moved to Yemen at the age of 16, where he worked
as a dispatch clerk with A. Besse & Co.
After working in Dubai for some time he later returned to India where he founded the Reliance Commercial Corporation
with a meager capital of Rs. 15000. He set up the business in partnership with Champaklal Damani from whom he split in
1965. Dhirubhai started his first textile mill at Baroda, near Ahmedabad and launched the brand "Vimal". He later
diversified into petrochemicals and sectors like Telecommunications, Information Technology, Energy, Power, Retail,
Textiles, Capital Markets and Logistics. He rose from humble beginnings to create India's largest industrial empire, and in
the process, became one of the world's richest men. He rewrote India's corporate history for which he was featured among
the select Forbes billionaires list. He also figured in the Sunday Times list of top 50 businessmen in Asia.
He never followed the traditional way and was often targeted for his business strategies due to which he courted
controversy all throughout his life. The 'Dhirubhai school of management' firmly believed that the only thing which
mattered were the end results and the benefits which infiltrated directly to the shareholders.
He won many awards and accolades during his lifetime. In 2000, he was conferred the 'Man of the Century' award by
Chemtech Foundation and Chemical Engineering World for his contribution to the growth and development of the
chemical industry in India. In 1998, he was awarded the Dean's Medal by The Wharton School, University of
Pennsylvania, for setting an outstanding example of leadership. Dhirubhai Ambani was also named the "Man of 20th
Century" by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
In 1986 after a severe heart stroke he handed over Reliance Group to his sons Mukesh and Anil. After his death, the
colossal corporate group was split into Reliance Industries, headed by Mukesh Ambani and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai
Ambani Group (ADAG), led by Anil Ambani.
A visionary by birth, his life has been an inspiration for many and will serve as a beacon light for the generations to come.

HISTORY OF NEWSPAPER PUBLISHING
The modern newspaper is a European invention. The oldest direct ancestors of the modern newspaper were the
handwritten news sheets that circulated widely in Venice as early as 1566. These weekly news sheets were filled with
information on wars and politics in Italy and Europe. The first printed newspapers were published weekly in Germany
from 1609. Typically, they were heavily censored by the government and reported only foreign news, and current prices.
After the English government relaxed censorship in 1695, newspapers flourished in London and a few other cities
including Boston and Philadelphia. By the 1830s high speed presses could print thousands of papers cheaply, allowing for
low daily costs.
HOW DID AMAZON GET IT'S START?
Jeff Bezos incorporated Amazon in July 1994, with the website launching to the public a year later. According to Quora,
the original name was going to be "Cadabra," but Bezos misheard it as "cadaver." Amazon is one of the prominent online
retailers in India. The name Amazon denotes the vastness of the store directory. Also, there is an arrow which moves in
the direction from ‘A’ to ‘Z’, hinting that the store has everything from ‘A’ to ‘Z’!
Early on, Amazon was not a retailer of "all things." Instead, the company focused primarily on books, the first of which
was sold out of Bezos' garage. Of course, this has changed quite a bit over the years as the company now sells everything
from toys to clothes to furniture and much more.
On May 15, 1997, Amazon issued its initial public offering of stock at a price of $18/share. Even though Amazon had a
solid business plan in place, investors began to worry about the future because the company had no intentions of making a
profit for the first five years.
During the first quarter of 2001 Amazon finally became profitable, posting revenue of $1 billion with a profit of $5
million. This may have been a small profit for the company, but it justified the plan that Bezos set in place from day one.
In the early days, it was difficult to look ahead and see Amazon as the number one online retailer in the world - but this is
exactly what happened. The company now has separate websites for a variety of markets, including: United States,
Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, and China among others.

DID AMAZON LOSE ITS OPPURTUNITY TO CAPTURE
FLIPKART?
Though Amazon didn’t get its hands-on FLIPKART but now it’s in a big move to venture into Healthcare industry of
India.
Global ecommerce behemoth Amazon, which has been
looking at 360-degree expansion of its portfolio, is ready to
dive into the Indian health tech market and is eyeing
acquiring online pharmacy MEd Plus. On the international
front, Amazon has already made a bet on health tech and
ventured into the pharmaceuticals market by acquiring Pill Pack, an online pharmacy, for about $1 Bn.
Amazon also hired renowned Harvard surgeon and writer Atul Gawande as the chief executive of its healthcare joint
venture with Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan.
Meanwhile, the Indian ecommerce industry has been disrupted by Walmart’s acquisition of a 77% stake in Flipkart, and
traders have been protesting the deal. The All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) is taking a strong
stand against Amazon’s plans to acquire MEd Plus. Reports cited Jagannathan Shinde, president of the AIOCD, as saying
that the 8.5 lakh chemists and pharmacists who are members of this organization were against online sales of drugs in
India.
On the other side Amazon is trying to get into online pharmacy, as an agitation is planned from August 1 to 14. If the
government doesn’t listen to the demands, as everyone will go into a work-to-rule mode opening the shops only eight
hours a day,”
“Amazon and Flipkart will burn capital to acquire customers. What will happen to the more than one crore of people
employed by pharmacies”
The Indian healthcare market, which is worth $100 Bn, is likely to grow at 23% CAGR to reach $280 Bn by 2020, as per
a Deloitte 2016 report. With Amazon ready to acquire MEd Plus, India’s health tech industry too should be ready for the
disruption.

STOCK MARKET NEWS
SEBI PROPOSES USING UPI TO REDUCE PUBLIC ISSUE TIMELINE
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed allowing investors to use the unified payments interface
(UPI) while bidding for shares in an initial public offer (IPO) to reduce the public issue timeline from the current T+6 to
T+3, where T indicates transaction day plus 3 working days.
In a discussion paper released on Wednesday, the capital market regulator said that while ASBA — application supported
by blocked amount — helped in reducing the timeline two years back, UPI Could help in further bringing down the
overall IPO timeline.
“In view of the significant developments in the payment mechanisms, it is felt that the unified payments interface (UPI)...
Could be incorporated with ASBA mechanism to further improve the efficiency of the (IPO) process,” stated the paper.
T+3 refers to a system wherein the equity shares would be listed on the bourses on the third day from the day the IPO
closes for subscription.
SEBI had reduced the IPO timeline from T+12 to T+6 in January 2016 by making ASBA mandatory for all investors.
SEBI, however, said since UPI had a cap of ₹2 lakh for money transfer, institutional investors and high net worth
individuals would be allowed to bid using the existing ASBA process.

NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION AGAINST MODI GOVT
HIGHLIGHTS:
HERE IS HOW IT UNFOLDED
After a raging 12-hour debate on Friday, the Narendra Modi-led NDA government defeated the no-confidence motion in
the Lok Sabha by 199 votes. While 126 members supported the motion, 325 MPs rejected it. The day-long session in the
Lower House saw the government and the Opposition trade charges and a moment of drama when Congress president
Rahul Gandhi, after a blistering speech, walk over to Prime Minister and embrace him in a hug.
Terming the no-trust vote against his government a result of the Opposition’s “arrogance”, Modi had earlier called on all
parties to dismiss the move and accused the Congress of working with the mindset of ‘Modi Hatao’ (remove
Modi). Responding to the debate on the motion, he said some people are indulging in “negative politics.” He also took a
dig at Rahul Gandhi for asking him to stand up for a hug after walking across to his chair in the Lok Sabha, saying the
Congress president appeared to be in a hurry to occupy his seat.
“Only the electorate of the country can decide his fate and make him sit on his chair,” Modi said, before asking, “What is
the hurry?” Gandhi was present in the House when the Prime Minister made the statement.
Friday’s no-confidence motion, the 27th in Parliamentary history, was the first to be admitted in 15 years. The last was in
2003 when the Congress party moved a no-confidence motion against prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

THE TRENDSETTERS!
Gameloft has finally launched its much-awaited racing game from the Asphalt line up, Asphalt 9 like
predecessor provides gamers to choose between some of the most premium cars and get an immersive console

the arcade racing category and this game will probably rock the segment.

MOVIE OF THE MONTH HINDI: SOORMA
SYNOPSIS: It is Sandeep Singh's. It's the greatest comeback story in the history of the game. Doubtless, the real-life saga
that inspired Shaad Ali's Soorma bordered on the miraculous. The film fails way short of harnessing its full dramatic
potential. Meant to be a celebration of a sportsman's resilience, this is a mechanical, hackneyed, dour re-enactment of a
remarkable life. The Sandeep Singh story deserved far better.
CAST: - Diljit Dosanjh as Sandeep Singh
- Tapsee Pannu as Harpreet
- Angad Bedi as Bikramjeet Singh
- Amit Gaur as Ajit, Harpreet’s Brother
- Satish Kaushik as Gurcharan Singh (Sandeep Singh's father)
- Seema Kaushal as Daljeet Kaur (Sandeep Singh's mother)
- Kul Bhushan Kharbanda as Chairman of Indian Hockey Federation
- Vijay Raaz as Harry (Sandeep Singh's Coach)
- AgamVir Singh as Young Sandeep Singh
Diljit and Tapsee both as usually played their part well. Tapsee Pannu is impressive in the role of Harpreet as she manages
to hold her own in a film that barely gives her an opportunity to perform. Her restrained, nuanced and measured
performance is surely going to win hearts. Angad Bedi is endearing as the protective and caring elder brother and so is
Satish Kaushik in the role of Sandeep's father. Angad has earlier appeared in films like 'Tiger Zinda Hai' and 'Pink' but
Soorma gives him his share of the spotlight. Diljit and Angad's on-screen camaraderie gives the most winsome moments.
Among the smaller roles that stand out is Vijay Raaz as Sandeep's quirky coach. He evokes maximum whistles and laughs
from the audience. His dialogues are so good that they are meme-worthy (if that's the highest standard of excellence). It's
a sheer delight to see the 'Kauwa Biryani' (Run) fame take over every possible scene with his 'Bihari' swag. He is the best
surprise Shaad Ali could have given to his audience.
Verdict: - Soorma might as well be called the most honest biopic to have ever come out of the Hindi film industry. It
surely warrants a theatre-watch. Don't wait for it to premiere on television, go catch it in your nearest theaters.

SYNOPSIS: Marvel studious is back again with another sci-fi movie. And is the sequel of our smallest super hero (and
even the biggest) ANTMAN. The story is after 2 years of civil war with Scott being in house arrest and in Government
observations for helping captain America. Life was going good with almost completing his 2 years and having good
relations with his daughter, his ex-wife and his husband. Until Dr. Hank opens the gate of quantum realm to find his lost
wife.
CAST:
- Judy Greer (Maggie)
- Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Starr/ghost)
- Abby Ryder Fortson (Cassie)
- Michelle Pfeiffer (Janet van dyne)
- Laurence Fishburne (Bill foster)
- Michael Douglas (Hank Pym)
- Paul Rudd (ANT MAN)
- Evangeline Lilly (Hope van dyne/wasp)
- Michael Peña (Luis)
- Walton Goggins (Sonny Burch)
Director Peyton Reed has homed in on everything that made the first Ant-Man so charming and doubled down on it, from
the offbeat humor to the zippy energy radiating from every scene. It’s a smidge longer than its predecessor, but somehow
feels tighter and more confident in its execution -- a rare feat for a sequel
Verdict; Boasting some of the most creative action scenes and finely-calibrated comedy in the Marvel universe so far,
Ant-Man and The Wasp doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it certainly knows how to make the ride even more fun. After the
doom and gloom of Infinity War, this savvy sequel is a welcome change of pace, and a reminder that the MCU is
malleable enough to tackle just about any genre and tone without losing its sense of identity. We’re eagerly ant-
imitating Ant-Man and the Wasp’s next outing.

A SMALL MESSAGE FROM A STUDENT TO HER MOTHER FOR BIRTHDAY WISHES;
I Met this lady on 8june 1997. I was wondering who she is, so beautiful. I was in love at first sight. I was gifted myself
