Unlocking Your Netgear Zing Hotspot
for International SIM Usage
The Netgear Zing International Hotspot comes with a few caveats when preparing it
for International Usage. Please see the step by step instructions below to ensure
your device will be ready for use when abroad.
CONTENT
A) UNLOCKING YOUR DEVICE
B) MODIFYING APN & NETWORK SETTINGS FOR FOREIGN CARRIER NETWORKS
C) MODIFYING APN & NETWORK SETTINGS WHEN RETURNING TO U.S. NETWORK
A) UNLOCKING YOUR DEVICE
**NOTE: This step MUST be performed in the United States while connected to the
Network. If you do not unlock your device before travel, you will not be able to
utilize your Netgear Zing abroad.
1) Upon powering up your device, your touch screen should show the following.
Begin by tapping “Settings”
2) In the WiFi screen, tap “Network”

3) Tap the “Down Arrow” button to reach the second page and tap “Next Arrow”
next to Updates
4) Tap the “Next Arrow” for both Update PRL and Update Network Settings
5) After complete the Updates, please reboot your device holding down on the
“Power” button at the top of the device & then selecting “Shut down” from the
touch screen.
6) Upon Rebooting, return to the Network Updates Page. Settings > Network >
Updates. You should now see a third option: “Unlock UICC”. Please Tap the
“Next Arrow” and follow the request to unlock your device for international
usage. The device will then connect with the network’s device unlock server to

update the device with the unlock commands. “REBOOT”
7) Upon Rebooting, your device should show a “YELLOW ALERT”. This happens
because the device unpairs the Sprint UICC SIM from the device, thus allowing for
hotspot-ready international SIMs to function with the device. Once you pop out
the SIM, plug it back in, and reboot one final time, the warning should go away.
8) TROUBLESHOOTING: If you already have a foreign hotspot-ready SIM in hand,
swap that foreign SIM into your Netgear Zing. If your device shows a “YELLOW
ALERT” reading you have inserted an “INVALID SIM”, then you have not yet
properly unlocked your device. If so, repeat the steps above to have the device
retrieve unlock commands from the network device unlock server. Once your
device no longer reads “INVALID SIM” upon inserting a foreign SIM, it is
confirmation that the device is unlocked.

B) MODIFYING APN & NETWORK SETTINGS FOR FOREIGN CARRIER NETWORKS
Each carrier requires SIMs to have APN settings that will authenticate on their
network. You will also need to input these settings into your Netgear Zing to allow
the device to access the foreign carrier’s data network.
**NOTE: Please make sure to insert the foreign hotspot-ready SIM (must be SIM
designed to function on hotspots) inorder follow through all the below steps and to
utilize the foreign carrier’s network!

2) Open a browser and go to the Netgear Zing’s administrator control page:
192.168.1.1 (NOTE: You will not be able to reach this administrator control page
if did not first connect your computer to the Netgear Zing’s wifi!)
3) Input your administrator password. The OEM default is “password”

(Chunghwa Network), enter in a third APN option with Name: “CHT” & APN:
“internet”. Make sure that this option is selected and select “Submit.”

foreign SIM, please input the pertaining APN settings for your foreign SIM. For

with your device. Typically the foreign carrier will provide you with the PIN code
on the SIM packaging. Once a SIM security is successfully disabled, you won’t
have to do it again.
