VISION : Government of Uttarakhand has initiated an innovative project “UNNATI”, which aims to
enhance Competencies in Functional English for students of classes IX and X studying in
Secondary Schools in 13 districts of the State.
Unnati is designed to improve the

students from 750 schools under
Uttarakhand Board.

2. PROJECT LAUNCH
Workshop for teachers
Mr. Mantri Prasad Naithani, Minister of Education, welcoming Mr.
Harish Rawat, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Uttarakhand.
The project was launched by Honourable Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in a gala ceremony attended by500 students and senior representatives on December 1, 2014 at Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
Mr. Harish Rawat, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand along
with other senior dignitaries and Mr. RCM Reddy, MD & CEO, IL&FS
Education releasing the manual of project Unnati.
Workshop for district level officials
1. Workshop for Teachers
School teachers were engaged to gauge the existing level of
English Language Skills in the students.
2. Workshop for District level ofcials
A workshop was conducted for the District officials to explain
about the “Unnati” Project, its implementation plan and the
expected outcomes, as well as the support required from
them.
3. Recruitment and Selection of Trainers
A statewide recruitment drive was initiated, both through
online and one to one mobilization. More than 5000
applications were received within one month. We reached
out to difficult terrains like Pithoragargh to identify the best
quality teachers in the state. Those selected were given specialtraining on Pedagogy and English language skills.

Recruitment and Selection of Trainers
A series of workshops were organised to engage the stakeholders to gain their feedback and conductneed analysis.

4. IMPLEMENTATION
• More than 850 English Instructors underwenta 3 days training organised by IL&FSEducation.
• The English Instructors were also given aRefresher Training after one month of project
roll out.
The students were assessed before the program to
gauge their existing English Language Skills.
An orientation program was conducted for the
Head Masters to align them with the objective of
the program.
76000 Students were given a participant Handbook
each as a part of the program.
A 90 hours Training was conducted in 750
Government schools to train students in functional
English and soft skills

Post Assessment Test was conducted for students
to measure the impact of the training delivered.

6. STUDENT ENGAGEMENT THROUGH VALUE ADDED SERVICES
Orientation on Festivals : Festivals were celebrated to
provide opportunities to use English as a medium for language
practice.
Activities for Holistic Development : With the objective of
teaching difficult aspects of the English language and making the
learning process more interesting, several outdoor activities were
organised.
Parent-Teacher Meeting : PTMs were conducted to create
an awareness on the importance of English language among the
parents.
Using School facility during vacation : This helped ensure
optimum utilization of time and resources for students.
During the 3 months, many Government & other senior officials visited the project site for ongoingevaluation and interaction with students.
